Turn a Landspeeder into a Hummer

January 4, 2008 by Blackhat · Filed Under Modeling & Scenery

This tutorial will show you how to turn a Landspeeder into a Hummer. A good tutorial by Andrea with pictures.

What You’ll Need

  • 1x 3008 Land Speeder kit (US$24.99)
  • 1x 99399999034 40K Bike Wheels Sprue ($1.00)
  • 1x 99399999033 Ork Large Wheel Sprue ($1.00)
  • 2x 010119804 Ablative Track Guard 1 ($1.50)
  • 2x 010119806 Ablative Track Guard 3 ($1.50)
  • 1X 010105303 Whirlwind Scanner ($1.00)
  • 1X 010105305 Whirlwind Rocket Support Arm ($3.00)
  • A length of 3mm wooden dowel (55mm long)
  • Misc. tank/vehicles bits (e.g. 99399999035 Imperial Tank
  • Accessory Sprue $6.00)

Get Bitz: The total retail cost of this vehicle, if you include the optional tank sprue, would be US$40. You can save up to $9 by ordering all the bitz from Hobby Workshop.

Construction Steps

hummer1b.jpg1) Bend the back track guards so that they fit onto the bottom of the Land Speeder. These will serve as the Hummer’s back fenders. (Picture #1)

2) Make two notches on the Rocket Support Arm to adapt it to fit the bottom of the Land Speeder. This will serve as the back axle and needs to be notched to fit properly next to the two engine exhaust vents on underside of the L.S. (Refer to Figure 2)

hummer2.jpg3) Cut off the rear stablizing fins off of the L.S. (Picture #2)

4) Cut the L.S.’s side bumper guards as shown in Figure 2, following the arrows for the side cuts (sorry, the cuts are not shown in the photo). The side bumpers are removed, leaving you with only the front bumper and the parts of the side bumper frames that extend underneath the L.S.’s cockpit. This part of the frame holds the side steps.

5) Build the rest of the Land Speeder kit as normal.
Now the fun part begins

6) Cut an axle 55mm long from the wooden dowel for the front axle and plug in the small wheels. (Refer to Figure 3)

hummer3.jpg7) Attach the axle where shown in Figure 3. It will be necessary to build 2-3mm “stand-offs” (or axle mounts) between the bottom of the L.S. and the axle itself. You can use sprue, plasticard, or other suitable material and make this as detailed as you want. I made mine after the photo, that’s why they aren’t shown.

The rear track guards are easy to assemble, the front guards are nastier. The left front guard fits perfectly on the support for the sensor array (right in front of the pilot). For the right guard, you have to fit it to the side as best you can. It may take some construction work. You can make little supports with pins, plasticard, or similar material.

9) Enlarge the large wheel’s internal hubs to fit the Rocket Arm you’re using as the back axle and fix them to the bottom of the L.S.

10) At this point the model is finished except for adding accessories. The Imperial Tank Accessories sprue (a.k.a. Leman Russ Accessory A sprue) is perfect for this. I added hunter missiles. They’re very cool, don’t you think? I also left off the front Sensor Array and put on a heavy bolter on instead.

Good Luck!!
