Here is their announcement.

In dark medieval times, every city had to defend itself. Buildings like Guard Tower enable soldiers to spot the enemy on time in order to make all necessary actions to properly prepare the city for attack. When the soldiers on the Guard Tower sound the alarm, town gates are being sealed and all who can fight equip themselves with weapons and readily await the battle to commence. Guard towers are built on the outskirts of a city, preferably on higher ground. These buildings have to be sturdy enough to withstand enemy’s cannon balls, stones thrown by catapults or even attacks by frenzied monsters such as Giants and Treeman. It has to be high enough so soldiers are able to see as much landscape as possible. Sometimes whole regiments of archers and other troops are stationed in one Guard Tower.

This massive kit comes with lots of accessories:

Here is their announcement:

Well, it’s that time again. The premier independent fantasy gaming magazine continues its run of ambling shenanigans and outrageous fashion advice (seal fur is soooo in this season) with its October—November edition.

Still at 56 pages of full-colour, eye-melting goodness, the latest issue contains:

- Wayne’s World: a brand new series of hobby articles written by Wayne Kemp of Heelanhammer podcasting fame. This issue he provides his unique take on building a Rat Ogre Bonebreaker from an all manner of bits and pieces, using a plastic River Troll as a basis.

- A Legend Never Dies: it may sound like the title for a James Bond film, but it’s actually a coverage of the recently held Giant Fanatic tournament, wonderfully written by our Danish agent in the field, Jimmi Stender. GF is one of the premier events in Europe and Jimmi gives us all the hot gossip on what went down, who did what, and what colour the carpet was (just kidding – there was no carpet). Also included is an interview with one of the organisers, a familiar face, about the merits of a newly conceived Line of Sight system that was used.

- Army Showcase: “Old School” Chaos Warriors. Matt Birdoff is one of the most prolific Warhammer players in the USA. He’s owned eight Chaos armies over the years, each a little whackier than the last, and this issue we showcase his latest weird and wonderful creations.

- HUGE Kings of War coverage. Included with the magazine is a copy of Mantic Games’s Kings of War, a brand new set of fantasy gaming rules that you can use with your existing miniatures. We also managed to land an interview with their CEO Ronnie Renton, get the Test Dummies to do a review of the rules, score two units of Undead Cavalry to give away, use their studio armies in a Dwarfs vs Undead battle report, and even use our patented Jedi Mind Tricks to convince them to let us give away an entire army!

Intrigued? As always you can check out a 10-page preview of the magazine HERE.

Short article this week because I was really lazy about taking pictures of what I was doing.

Project 1: Terrain Day 2: Electric Boogaloo

The first Terrain Day was very productive, but the projects all needed more work, so we ran the sequel this week.

First up, the Troll houses. Here’s where they were when we left off last week.

I used craft foam to enclose the roof, so the thatch would have something to adhere to.

“Wait… thatch?”

Yep, thatch.

The key is to use fake fur. Here I’m hot gluing the fur to the foam.

Once it’s glued on, I give it a “haircut” to turn it from the shaggy mess on the left, to a pile of random-length clumps as seen on the right. Once it’s all nicely trimmed, I soak it in watered-down white glue and brush it all into downward-pointing clumps.

Once the glue’s dry (which takes almost a day, since the fur absorbs a ton of liquid), it’s hard and looks like hay. I got as far as priming it today– I’ll do the final paints on this for next week or the week after.

The next things I worked on were a series of obstacles to spice up the battlefields. Here I’m using styrofoam to make an art deco Khador monument. Step 1 was to cut some smooth, squared bars out of 1″ foam, and a Khador symbol out of 1/2″.

I glued the bars to a base of more stacked foam, using matchsticks as a spacer to keep the bars separated.

Once that was done, I stuck the symbol to the top with toothpicks and carved a word into the front with a pen. The word is “United”, in Russian, spelled phonetically, and turned into the Khador font. So… yeah. It’s pretty much meaningless at this point.

I’ll be painting this to look like either granite or marble… haven’t decided yet. The symbol may be stone or bronze.

Next, I did a war monument. Here I’m cutting out the smooth marble slab. Making smooth, accurate cuts in foam with a wire cutter is nearly impossible freehand– you can control what the cutter does on one side of the foam, but it’ll wobble like mad on the back side where you can’t see it, which makes terrible cuts. To fix that, I lightly glued sticks to the back side to act as guard rails; I’d keep the cut straight visually on the near side, and trust the guardrail to do the job on the back. It worked out quite well, but it’s definitely a slow process, and wouldn’t be very helpful if you’re cutting out a ton of pieces.

Here’s the built monument, made out of stacked foam and plasticard, and topped with a couple Winter Guard I got on sale today at the HK birthday party.

Like the Unity monument, this one will be a stone foundation with bronzed figures once it’s painted.

The next two pieces are back to the Troll stuff. Here’s a village Krielstone; drawing the 80+ runes on this thing took freaking forever, but I think it came out looking pretty good in the end, so I’m happy. This will be VERY quick to paint.

This is the other one, a shrine to Dhunia. I ended up ripping the “wings” off in the end, as they looked kind of dumb.

It’ll be similarly quick to paint, though I’ll be putting a ton of foliage and flowers into a garden at the base (on the blue-colored part).

Next up, I made some fences. I bought pre-fab fences on sale from Michael’s, but needed a way to securely attach them to the bases. I accomplished this with nails; my accomplices today drilled holes roughly 4″ apart, and we put 1″ tack nails through them. The nails were quite securely attached to the base with hot glue. They’ll snap if a ton of pressure is applied, but should hold up fine under normal gameplay use.

Finally, I cut the fences into 4.5″ segments and glued them to the upright nails (which you can see toward the ends of a few of them). These, like everything else, should be really fast to paint + flock.

All in all a pretty productive day, but once again I was a bit disappointed that I didn’t finish anything. I’ve got three weeks before the next DoV… hopefully I can knock all this out before then.

As with the first Terrain Day, the real fun of today was in the guest stars. I was really terrible about taking pictures of their stuff… I was having too much fun building and goofing around.

Kyle “X” Stratford worked on a few different things. Here he’s detailing a fallen standing stone.

He did a fantastic job of imitating the look of Circle stones on this. To cut out the sunken areas, he carefully traced the edges, then cross-hatched with a knife to “shred” the surface. He then spent quite a while carefully digging the shreds out with the tip of a knife. A tedious process, but you really can’t argue with the results.

Kyle also worked on finishing and basing a few things he started last time, like his his crate stack.

This is Pat “AEdge” Gordon, aka one of the best painters at the Hobby Kingdom, and (as far as I recall) our very first terrain guru. Check out his site for some absolutely spectacular models and terrain. In particular, he’s got a tutorial for how he does some of the best winter terrain (snow and ice) I’ve ever seen. Definitely worth checking out.

Today, Pat worked on water terrain. I helped him cut vaguely 4″x8″ MDF bases, and then he spent the day adding styrofoam “lips” around them to contain water. He textured them with drywall filler (pink goop that hardens like plaster). Here he’s hand-drying some glue after he stuck textured ballast onto the surface.

Our third attendee, Scott Burt, was out of the room when I went around for pictures, but he was working on some sweet trench templates. He gave each one a single elevated side cut out of sloped styrofoam, and held in on the other side by planks and posts like a real trench.

We also had one semi-attendee– Jordan “JDWhitee” White was killing time for an hour, so I drafted him to cut out styrofoam rocks with a wire cutter to make more obstacle bases.

He works very quickly– he made six rock obstacles in an hour. I’ll be painting these myself, but like everything else, they should be really quick. I’m actually going to spray these instead of brushing the basecoat on, because I WANT them to “rot away” a bit from the spray for added texture.

Here’s all my stuff drying. I use a floor heater to speed the process up.

The heater’s also handy for drying my slugs.

Kyle gave me these at the last terrain day– they’re metal remnants from his day job at a machine shop (they want a hole cut in something, so he collected the center circle for each one). They came drenched in machine oil, so I got to spend an hour scrubbing them all with soap and water. I’m going to hit them all with metal spraypaint tomorrow to keep them from rusting, as they’re not galvanized metal or stainless.

We’ll be using these for base weighting on various terrain bits– they’re quite hefty despite their small size.

Aaaaaaaaand that’s what we did today. Here’s all my terrain stuff packed back in my car (the attendees were awesome enough to help me lug it all out there)… I really have too much terrain crap. >_<

Thanks again to everyone who showed up! I’ll have pics of all this stuff when it’s all painted (and pics of the other Elves’ work closer to the event).

Stuff

That’s all I’ve got for you this week. Next week I’ll have updates on my modeling projects, and possibly my Secret Santa model, which I’ve just gotten done priming.

Our 5cm canal system is a small-scale counterpart to our already popular gothic canal system for 28mm. Made from lasercut acrylic it’s tough, easy to paint and easy to assemble.

The ”water” is made from translucent acrylic and is offered in smoke grey or in flourescent green for that classic 40K-style. Being translucent it’s easy to create many different effects by placing coloured or printed paper inserts underneath.

I would also like to remind everybody that Xmas is approaching rapidly. In addition to the usual postal delays that accompany the season, please remember that all of our products are made to order. While we will do our upmost to get as many orders out in time for Xmas as possible the earlier you can get them to us the better.

The new blood angel’s sanguinary guard kit is brilliant. Frankly, it’s worth picking up even if you’re not interested in collecting blood angels, like the chaos marauder horsemen kit, it’s just a great kit that produces easy to build and style miniatures that anyone can make look good.

But there’s a problem. The sprues only carry one infernus pistol! These nasty little weapons pack all of the power of a melta gun into a convenient wrist mounted pistol. Most people are going to want more than one!

Luckily the blood angels death company sprues include two of these weapons so today we’re going to show you how to convert death company infernus pistols for use by your very own sanguinary guard.Er, for Sanguinius!

For this conversion you’re going to need a death company infernus pistol and either a sanguinary guard plasma pistol or angelus bolter. Since we’re not plasma pistol fans here at GDMNW we knew ours would never see the light of day, so we’re using those. But the choice is yours.

Ideally you should use a hobby saw or a series of small cuts with a hobby knife to remove the front end of the plasma pistol. Be careful to avoid damaging the wrist mount beneath the pistol housing.

Next you need to cut away the plasma pistol housing itself. It’s best to cut through the pistol housing and then clean up the top of the wrist mount rather than risk cutting into the mount by cutting away too much at once. You want to leave a flat surface preserving the detail of the mount itself.

Next remove the infernus pistol from the death company arm. This is also best accomplished in two stages. First remove the hand and weapon at the wrist. This cut is easy to make as it is well away from parts of the model we want to preserve.

Second, cut away the hand and clean the area under the pistol housing and behind the heat sink. The designers who made the blood angel miniatures use standard pre-made weapons for all of the range so the death company infernus pistol is identical to the sanguinary guard one.

It’s a perfect fit.

At four cuts, some cleaning and two dots of polystyrene cement this is a straightforward conversion that meets the GDMNW standard for good conversions. (You can’t really tell that it’s been converted) When you put our newly made sanguinary guard infernus pistol next to the real thing you can hardly see the difference.

Here’s some we made earlier. With four of these vicious relics from the dark age of technology our sanguinary guard will be cutting through the oppositions tanks like hot knives through butter.

There you have it. Comments and suggestions are welcome.

A new article have been published at the Astronomican today. The article is a step by step guide on how to build and paint your own Tower of Sorcery. Great hobby tips by Chad is provided throughout the article. Whether you are building the tower or not its still a recommendable article with lots of good tips and advice to use for other building projects.

Warhammer: Tower of Sorcery shows you some different ways to use Witchfate Tor and Dreadstone Blight in your games. ‘The Roving Tower of Lustria’ scenario could be very amusing (and pretty frustrating too, I bet) as it features a moving Witchfate Tor. While this is not strictly a rule from the rulebook it is a perfect example of how you can make your battles even more spectacular by adding a scenario that you have designed yourself.

You can read their announcement here

The dimly lit pub was populated by unsavory characters of all types, sipping their drinks as they surveyed the room from beneath dark hoods. The innkeeper moved deftly and noiselessly to refill the cups of his thirsty patrons with the watered-down swill he kept on tap, until a gaunt man in a tall top hat interrupted him. “I’m looking for something… special, and I understand you’re the man to see,” whispered the visitor. The innkeeper’s eyes narrowed, but the visitor’s hand quickly appeared from beneath his cloak, jingling a leather purse full of coins. “Aye,” grumbled the innkeeper, the glint of gold in his eye. “What’ll it be?”

The thieves of Cadwallon are always looking for an edge, and an inventive innkeeper may have just what they need. But in this town, nothing comes without a price…

Head to our support page and download The Inn (pdf, 320 KB), a variant for Cadwallon: City of Thieves! With these new tools and tricks at your disposal, the streets just got a bit more interesting.

For those of you who have not seen it, I felt I should post a description of the first Leviathan release. For those that have…. Here is some new eye candy.

Grandfather of all Leviathans; the VR5 design is over 200 years old and has seen many improvements and variants. It and its variations are widely considered some of the finest designs ever produced. A balance of size, speed, armor and armament all come together to make a very formidable vehicle.

The decision to design the cockpit after the Totenköpfe skull was primarily nostalgic and a matter of national pride. The frame of the first Leviathan was designated VR5 in honor of the 5th Regiment commanded by Colonel von Ruesch, the first Hussar commander to use the deaths head symbol. The Prussian army Hussar first adopted this symbol in 1744.

The Mortis in its purest form is outfitted with two close combat weapons, and no additional armor, this allows for the fastest possible movement and a vicious close combat capability. The massive oil stacks provide the option of overcharging the reactor for enhanced speed or combat. Two KwK 200 20cm auto cannons mounted in the torso ensure its survivability in a ranged engagement.

First one out will be the blog by Ricalopia where he painted this awesome Eldar units….

Yes please, especially at 210 points.

We know this is often the time of year that people consider starting a new army, or maybe building upon an existing collection, and we know that there are a lot of Elf players out there. Well we here at Mantic Games have decided that we want to make that as easy for you as possible.

Lord Elthenar’s Vengeful Cohort is a great way to start your own Elf army this Christmas, or to expand your current force. Within this set you get: 40 Spearmen, 40 Bowmen, 20 Seaguard, 20 Scouts, 20 Palace Guard, 5 Stormwind Cavalry, 2 Bolt Throwers, 1 Dragon’s Breath, the Elf King’s Court, an Elven Lord on Dragon and the limited edition Elven General. That is an incredible 160 figures!

Also included in this set is a FREE Mantic Messenger Bag and Printed Kings of War Rules included in this set!

Elthenar Bladedancer is the youngest lord of the Eastern Reaches ever to have worn the mantle of rulership, yet in the decades since donning the sacred Helm of Dawn he has earned the respect of both ally and foe alike. Haughty, arrogant and proud, he is regarded as a fair if merciless and cold ruler, yet it is on the field of battle where his true skills come to the fore. Indeed, such is his tactical brilliance and unmatched blade-skills that he has been compared to the great dragon-riding battle kings of old.

This army deal allows you to field an impressive Elven Army, made up of an amazing 160 figures, for an absolutely incredible price of £150/€185/$ 270

So what are you waiting for? Pre-order yours here!
Please Note: This item is currently only available to pre-order and will be shipping on the 26th November 2010

These full resin kits, designed by Phil Stutcinskas, afford Space Marine players the complete range of Codex options for the Ironclad Dreadnought. Heavily augmented and outfitted for siege assault and ship boarding actions, the Ironclad Dreadnought sacrifices versatility and long-range firepower for even greater armoured defence and dedicated siege weaponry such as the Seismic Hammer and Chainfist, designed to pulverise the toughest bastion or armoured bulkhead into twisted wreckage.

The fearsome short-ranged firepower of a Hurricane Bolter is often used to augment the Ironclad’s firepower, allowing the ancient hero within the sarcophagus to saturate breached defences with a deadly storm of bolter shells. The MkIV Ironclad Dreadnought is a full resin kit that comes complete with Hunter Killer Missiles and Frag Assault Launchers, furthering the Ironclad’s potent weaponry, as well as additional armour plates to fit the resin MkIV Hurricane Bolter, MkIV Seismic Hammer and MkIV Chainfist and our other MkIV Dreadnought arms. Each of these detailed kits is available to pre-order now for despatch in the week commencing December 6th.

The first of our new wave of Space Marine releases is the devastatingly powerful Land Raider Achilles. This resin and plastic hybrid kit, designed by Stuart Williamson, boasts sponson-mounted twin Multi-Meltas and a hull-mounted Thunderfire Cannon. A line-breaker beyond compare, the Land Raider Achilles’ firepower is capable of forcing a breach in even the strongest defences at the tip of an armoured assault.

Originating in the closing years of the Great Crusade, the Achilles is perhaps the rarest and most venerable Land Raider variant still used on the battlefields of the 41st Millenium. It was originally created by the Imperial Fists Legion in response to a dire xenos threat now lost to the mists of history, and fittingly rare outside the noble Imperial Fists, their successors and the Ordo Reductor of the Adeptus Mechanus. The Achilles is perhaps most vaunted for its legendary durability – each stage of the hull’s construction incorporates layer upon layer of ancient electromagnetic algorithms and ferromantic incantations. This arcane lore is etched into the very structure of the Land Raider Achilles at a molecular level, and is one the most secret and ancient rites of the Cult Mechanicus.

The Land Raider Achilles is a complete resin and plastic kit, and is available to pre-order now for despatch in the week commencing December 6th, and is included in the Space Marine Siege Assault Vanguard army list in the forthcoming Imperial Armour Volume 10: The Badab War Part II. As an exclusive extra, we have prised the rules for the Achilles from Alan Bligh’s grasp and they are available to download for free here.

Two new base themes are here. City Street and Wooden Deck. Earlier there was discussion about a new theme coming out soon called Curbside. We have renamed this to City Street so they are now one and the same. The name change was made to make that base series more searchable.

City Street bases are great for both fantasy cities and more modern cities. The streets are brick and some bases contains sidewalk curbs, drains, and manhole covers. This theme will really work great for Malifaux, Warmachine, Hordes, Spinespur, and Warhammer Fantasy. Right now the 30mm fancy round is available. The next bases to arrive in this series will be the 40mm and 50mm fancy round. Eventually there will be the full line of square and normal round bases as well.

Wooden Deck bases will be great for a pirate theme army or any place that has old wooden floors. 30mm Fancy Round is now available and the 40mm and 50mm fancy rounds are in progress now. This theme will also be fully flushed out to include the square and normal rounds in the future.

They are Available in colour-coded opaque or in your choice of translucent fluorescent colours.

The basic set in Opaque are £4 which is an excellent price for 26 game tokens. There are limited paper or book keeping requirements whilst playing Grunts but it is important to mark the numbers of “Waxed” or dead models in a unit during a turn, hence the need for the little white skulls. You also need to clearly mark a unit for suppression, broken and the down condition.

They are of a size that is clear to see on a games table and are a small size, so as not to distract from 15mm scale miniatures. This is our first round of basic Grunts set tokens and future ones will appear for various other conditions in the game.

After the weekend I will have some photos and videos of the tokens in use, so you can see the size and how handy they are for use in game. If you are coming to the Warfare show in Reading you will be able to see them in action. They are available now for purchase on the S3 Engineering site from this link.

New releases for November at the Chapterhouse Studios are new skull doors, salamander upgrades and more. They also have our regular list of new shoulder pads for your favorite underappreciated Space Marine Chapters.

We have our first cast in of our Mycetic Spore, as you can see it could realistically transport a carnifex ora brood of gaunts. This is a 4 piece model

First up are the pre-heresy Thousand Sons shoulder pads, these are especially nice showing their first attempt at pre-heresy Terminator pads, also they have a rather nice Mantis Warriors space marine pad set.

Lastly for the pads, the Chapterhouse Studios resculpted the Blood Ravens shoulder pads to have a blood drop instead of an inverted drop. The previous pads will be listed as Blood Eagle pads, while the updated sculpts will be listed as Blood Ravens pads.

They also offer 3 new Rhino Conversion Kits for the Space Wolves, Dragon based Chapters, and a Tactical Door kit with skulls

The Hornet is a light tank employed by Eldar armoured forces in a fast reconnaissance and raiding role. Piloted by a single crewman, it can be found in the forefront of Eldar aspect warrior assault waves, speeding ahead of heavier Falcons and Wave Serpents and often operating alongside other high-speed attack craft such as jetbikes and Vypers.

So I’m looking to solve a few problems in one tutorial here. The main goal is making simple stamps that could be used for many different things. The demo is for creating a chapter badge stamp because that’s what I happen to be doing right now. Second will be how to create your own chapter badges using Vector tools to aid in your stamp making and anything else you can think of. Programs include Photoshop, Illustrator, Corel Draw or Inkscape.

For this tutorial, I’ll be using Inkscape since it’s a free program available to anyone. If you’re not interested in creating a badge digitally, feel free to skip ahead to step 4 for the stamp making. As I said we’ll be using Inkscape here. You can get it for free at Inkscape. Draw Freely.

Basic Tools

Super Sculpy

Sculpy (optional)

GreenStuff

X-acto

Good tweezers

Smoothing tool

Tape

Some plastic (Plastic bag works great)

Vaseline

A little more advanced Tools

Digital Art Program. Preferably something with Vector (Pen) tools.

Printer

I’ll take a second to explain why going down the sometimes troublesome path of creating a vector can be useful. As most people familiar with photo editing or digital art know. Significantly resizing an image generally looks like garbage. That’s because they’re pixel based images (rasterised). When resizing a rasterised image it tries it’s best to fill in gaps or cram too much data into a shrinking area, resulting in a mess As seen on the left side below.

A vector on the other hand is never really “printed” onto your workspace. It’s lines are mathmatical solutions connecting the points you’ve provided. Slightly confusing, yes, but what this means is you can scale up that vector to be the size of your house, or down to fit on a space marine’s shoulder pad and it’ll look exactly the same as your original. This is shown on the right side of the image below.

Step 1

So let’s crack open Inkscape and get to work. You’ll be presented with a blank work area. Start by pasting in your source image. A source is very important in all artwork, and it makes vector life so much easier. In this case I have a badge for the Raptors chapter from Lexicanum, but it could be anything like a photo or original artwork. I’ve sized the image up quite a bit to make it a little easier to work with. This is done with the selection tool. Click on your image, grab one of the corner arrows, and drag while holding CTRL to keep it from distorting. Then go up to Layer and Create New Layer. Name it whatever, this is where you’ll be putting your vector object.

Step 2

From now on we’ll be using two tools for the whole project. “Draw Bezier Curves and Straight Lines” (Draw) and “Edit Paths by Nodes” (Edit)

With the draw tool a single click will give you a hard point and straght line.
With a click+drag you’ll pull out a Bezier handle that can be edited later.

Take the draw tool and select your starting point. This should be an area with a flat edge or point. Start with a click and it’ll feed out your vector “rope”. On large curves like the beak, you’ll want to put another point on about the center of the curve. On small curves you’ll want a point at the start of the curve and a point at the end. I pulled out a bezier handle and matched the line to the curve of the beak.

Now it’s easiest to make the outline in one pass. So keep clicking away tracing your artwork, making sure to give yourself enough points to work with later, but too many and you’ll get a headache. Generally speaking give yourself 3 points for a big curve, 2 for a small, and a hard point for your sharp edges. If you’re not sure about a point, just be safe and give yourself a bezier handle, you can always edit it later.

Don’t worry! It’ll look like crap when you finish. Now it’s time to edit.

Step 3

Grab your Edit tool and start repositioning points to make everything pretty. The bezier handels in this program are a little finniky, but managable. If you’re looking for a sharp corner, push one side of the handle all the way into the point. Then readjust the other end of the handle to match your curve. With a little doing it’s very simple.

Now that that you have an outline, add any interior detail by starting a new vector object (just start clicking again). In my case I only have the eye. Once that’s complete and edited you can shift+click all your objects, go up to Path and hit Combine.

Now let’s go up to Object and hit Fill and Stroke. What a cool bird! Make sure your new vector object is selected. Note that I get rid of the eye and filled it with Flat color – Black to aid with my stamp making later on.

To size your badge (or whatever) go to File > Document Properties. Change your page units under Custom Size from px (pixels) to Inches or mm.Then click on the Grids tab and enable Grids with inches (or mm). I decided that 1/4 inch tall is a decent size for a space marine badge, so I changed spacing X and Y to 0.25. Now you’ve got a properly sized badge and can color it to your liking and duplicate it to high heaven for printing transfer sheets just like the ones on BoLS, or make a small sheet of different sizes to print for a stamp making aid

Step 4 – Stamping.

This entire stamping portion was done with an X-acto knife, a little bit of toothpicking, and smoothing with a silicone tipped clay tool. It’s pretty straight forward but I decided to include it anyway for the sake of completeness.

I printed out a little sheet to help guide me and taped it onto a plastic bag so it wouldn’t get mucked up. I flattened out a round of Super Sculpy to cover one of my pad sized prints. I use this as a loose guide to make my cuts. I just cut a little out at a time and keep matching it up to my print out. Super Sculpy is important for this as it’s much firmer and easier to cut at than just plain Sculpy. I didn’t worry about really sharp points as this can be cleaned up in the negatives. Once that’s done I stuck it in the oven to bake. A good trick I learned about sculpy in art school is ignore the cooking instructions on the back. Preheat your oven to 250-275, put your piece in, and turn the oven off. Then just leave it for a few hours or until the oven is cooled off. For very thick stuff just leave it on for 5-10 minutes then turn it off.

Step 5

Now flatten out a bit of Sculpy. I prefer this kind for the stamp as it’s much softer so I don’t have to worry about cracking or anything. Just push in however many times you want so you can be GSing several at a time. The toughest part is getting the original out. It takes a light hand and some pointy tweezers, but most of the time it comes right out. Now bake your new stamp. (Edited with a better stamp)

Step 6

Put a thin coat of vaseline into your stamps making sure it gets in all the corners but doesn’t build up enough to block the GS. I use a crappy old brush for this. Mix up a ball of GS and carefully push it in. Again, the corners are important. Let it sit in the stamp for a few minutes then carefully peel it out, trim off any excess, and slap it onto whatever you want.

I use this for a lot of random little things that I need a few of. Besides Chapter badges of various sizes I’ve done goggles for my Imperial Guardsmen and plan on doing some simple backpacks.

GS could be used instead of scuply of course, but I prefer the feel and endless working time of it. Plus it’s extremely cheap compared to most epoxies.

If I glossed over any important steps let me know and I’ll clear that up. I feel like I got everything in there.

CoolMiniOrNot Inc announced today the Crystal Brush Awards, which will be a painting competition held at AdeptiCon 2011 in Chicago from April 1st to 3rd 2011.

The Crystal Brush awards are a showcase for the best in miniature painting, primarily focused on fictional settings. As a competition meant to celebrate the hobby, figures from any manufacturer are welcome.

Huge cash prize

Chief highlight was the news that the top scoring miniature would receive $10,000, and unheard of sum for miniatures. 2nd and 3rd prizes were also guaranteed at $2,000 and $1,000 respectively.

“This is quite a large sum of money”, said Chern Ann Ng, Director at CoolMiniOrNot. “Running CoolMiniOrNot.com since 2001 has shown us that there is a huge pool of talent out there, but global competition tends to be focused around just manufacturer sponsored and controlled events. ”

“We thought it was high time that someone stepped forward and organized a competition that would really let creative juices flow, regardless of manufacturer ties. Hopefully, the miniature painting community will see we are dead serious and we expect a good turnout and fantastic miniatures.”
