Within the space of just over 10 days the tickets for Blog Wars 5 have sold out! That’s including the additional 10 spots I added to the original 30. Assuming everyone actually shows up on the day I’ve got nearly double the number of attendees this time! I’ve even got someone on the reserves list. Thank you to everyone who’s bought a ticket. It makes all the hard work that I put into organising these events seem worth it. Hopefully this will be the best Blog Wars ever! I’m pleased to see a great combination of new players and veterans of previous “Wars”. On the subject of reserves, if you missed out on getting a ticket and would still like to go please let me know. There’s every chance people will have to drop out nearer the time and in those situations I’ll need some people in reserve to fill the gaps. If the usual happens and I end with an odd number at the last minute it’ll mean one of the reserves gets to play for free! Anyway, all that aside the best news for you guys is that with so many people coming the prize pot is going to be huge. Remember I don’t make a penny from these events so for the £15 ticket price, £8 goes to the venue for the food etc and the remaining £7 goes into the prize pot. £7 x 40 tickets is obviously £280.
Firstly, let me apologise for my recent lack of blog posts. We’ve recently moved house and our internet connection won’t be activated until bloody December!! Therefore I’m currently borrowing my mobile’s internet connection to post but as you can imagine it isn’t ideal! Anyway, all that aside I wanted to throw up some updates about Blog Wars 4. Maelstrom Drama Let’s get this out of the way before I talk about the fun stuff. As you may have read on various sites across the internet Maelstrom is apparently having some financial difficulties. Obviously as this is the venue for Blog Wars I’ve been paying attention to this. However, as far as I’m aware the venue, Eye of the Storm, will not be affected by the apparent problems. From what I’ve heard they split the venue which was profitable from the store which was struggling in the wake of GW’s change to shipping policy (i.e. can’t seen to the US/Australia any more).
Thanks for the responses to Sunday’s appeal post. Things got worse before they got better though! Firstly, I got to work on Monday and was speaking to Dave (who was bringing Blood Angels). Thanks to the unique and wonderful way our rota works he’s now got to work Saturday and no-one is able to cover it for him. Sad as I am that he’s not coming along (and making it full attendance from my little gaming group), it did kind of solve the problem, back to even numbers I thought. So then I get home and find I’ve had a few emails with people offering to either show up themselves or post about in on their blog/facebook/twitter for me. Firstly, thanks very much for all your help in what was essentially a selfish endeavour since basically it’s so I can play at my own tournament! Anyway, amongst these emails was one from Andy Lane of Claws and Fists saying that family commitments mean he also can’t make it. Again, I’m gutted because Andy was one of the first people I met on the tournament scene and seems to be a constant presence at the events I attend but, of course, family comes first and I can’t argue with that. So that’s me back to odd numbers again so I reply to Paul O’Boyle from Faulty Dice who’s now at the bottom of the list of competitors. Please note the player numbers should’ve stayed the same. I’ve sent off an email to Tim King at Maelstrom (the guy who ran Summer Skirmish there last year is now Events Manager!).
Yeah, I know, I know, I’m slacking, but I’m still relaxing after what was an amazing convention and (just this weekend) my 22nd Birthday! Time for some more coverage.. The Eldar Waygate at the Forest Table Adepticon 2012, Part II: About KILLZONE and Oh, How the Tables Have Turned!!
Having had a little whinge the other day saying Blog Wars 2 might not happen I’ve had a great response from people and hopefully the numbers will improve over the next couple of days. I’ve decided that what ever the ticket sales the show must go on! Matt and I played in the End Times tournament at WHW recently and thanks to ETC on the same weekend there were only 12 of us. You know what, it was still an excellent little tournament and good times were had by all! The prizes will still be broken down in roughly the same ratios but I’ll tweak it based on the number of tickets I sell. If I get the full 20 then we’ll be playing for the prizes as they are but without any spot/raffle prizes. Anything less than 20 and I’ll have to recalculate. I’ve changed the BW2 page to just show 20 spots (makes it look a little less embarassing) and I’ve added a few more people on who’ve bought tickets today. What to do if you’ve already bought a ticket Firstly, thanks for doing so, I’m glad you can make it. Other than that there are a few things you can do to get ready for the tournament.
Hello everyone! I hadn’t even planned to go to this until the last possible minute, when Mags and Snake Eyes offered me a spot in the car for the great trip north. I’m really glad I went! Game one was Dawn of War, Annihilation against a Descent of Angels list backed up by two Baal Predators. I thought I was in trouble when my opponent, Jon Machado (possibly one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met), got nearly all of his units from reserve on turn 2. His failed catastrophically; his Vanguard Veterans mishapped and died, while I got to place his honor guard due to a mishap and put them in dangerous terrain on his board edge. He lost two and they failed their leadership and ran off the board. After that it was pretty much just mopping up, the poor guy lost 1/3 of his army to Deep Strike mishaps! Game two was against a really nicely painted Space Wolves army that included Njal (how I would come to hate that character!). The mission was Capture and Control on Spearhead. We traded punches with our Drop Pods for 5 turns and ended up with a draw. Njal wasn’t all that big of a factor offensively, but his Psychic Hood (or whatever it’s called) was an absolute thorn in my side. Had the game ended on turn 5 it would have been a win for me, but it just ended up as a heartbreaker of a draw
We hit round rock donuts this morning before the doubles tournament. They make giant 3 lb donuts, as featured on Man bs Food. Here we are enjoying our breakfast of champions!
This article is part of the Basement Gamers Cookbook series. Click here to view all available articles. W hat separates a Basement Game from a pick-up game at a store or a club day is planning. Typically, you know who will be showing up for a Basement Game and you will set up the tables, prepare the food, get drinks, etc. One aspect that is normally overlooked is the overall theme of the games that will be played. You are so glad to be getting some awesome games in that you forget to actually plan the games themselves. Sure, you specified how many points, you might have even specified a scenario or mission. But have you given the day an overall theme? Consider this scenario: you and three fellow Basement Gamers decide to get together once a month in your basement for a game or two
More terminators arrive to claim their objective – the Inquisitor Click here to read Part I. Click here to read Part II. Click here to read Part III. Turn three digressed into a massed melee mess. Because Rahmiel’s inquisitor was designated at the target of Stavrous’ Vengeance Task Force, he was the obvious target. Thirty terminators dropped onto the table right beside the inquisitor. But they were all fitted for close combat, so shooting the inquisitor wasn’t an option. Poor dude didn’t have much of a chance. The Deathstrike Vortex Missile rolled another one, so shooting it wasn’t an option.
