Before I delved into modeling my Astral Claws, I first needed to get grips on the story of my army. I knew going in that Lugft Huron was the Chapter Master of the Astral Claws, and that the Astral Claws had been the catalyst for a major conflict between the Administratum and the Warders of the Maelstrom. I knew that the fight was related to planetary tithes, and that the Tyrant of Badab considered himself to be acting in the Imperium’s interest. As I found out more, I quickly became quite enamored with my new chosen chapter. Prior to their service in the Maelstrom, the Astral Claws were a fleet based chapter, and their specific founding is not entirely clear. The records of their parent chapter have been lost, so they start with an air of mystery. The money bet for the chapter is sadly that they are Ultramarines, owing to their blue heraldry, Roman aesthetic, and codex adherence. Some link the chapter’s Lion heraldry to the Dark Angels, but since they have no inner circle and don’t pass on the story of the Unforgiven, it seems unlikely they were a successor as such. Whatever the source material, the Claws at some point spawned a few sucessor chapters, of which only one is named, the Tiger Claws. The current version of the Tiger Claws paint scheme The Tiger Claws are an interesting side portion of the story, their role perfectly fits into the fall from grace story

Thought I’d answer a couple of questions that have arisen this week. Before I do let me remind you that tickets will still be available until midnight next Saturday. This is also the deadline for army list submission. Maelstrom Games Collapse As you may be reading across the internet, Maelstrom Games has gone under. I wanted to get a post up pretty quickly to prevent any concerns that Blog Wars 4 won’t be going ahead. It is my understanding that whilst the retail arm of the business is going into liquidation, the Eye of the Storm venue is still trading normally. I want to reassure everyone coming to BW4 that their money is safe. If I’m forced to cancel the event because it turns out the venue is closing then everyone will get their ticket price back. Therefore if you’re having doubts about coming along because of the Maelstrom drama then rest assured that you won’t be taking a risk in buying a ticket! One final point on this. I’ve yet to clarify whether the venue still has a store attached to it.

I’m sorry this has been a long time coming but what with post grad work, interviews and getting in as much 6th edition as possible I’m only just getting round to it. The first and most important thing to say is that Blog Wars 4 will NOT be on October 14th as previously advertised. Unfortunately a good friend of mine has decided to have his stag do that weekend (inconsiderate I know) and therefore I won't be getting back until later on the Sunday. I'm extremely sorry if this causes anyone any inconvenience since I know some of you have to reserve your tournament days with the wife etc early on! I'm currently trying to get in touch with Maelstrom to reschedule and my preference would be either

As promised here’s a rundown of the special characters that will be in attendance for Blog Wars 3 on Saturday. Let’s start with the Emperor’s Finest, for the mighty Space Wolves their only representatitve, Frank Marsh, has opted to bring along Grimnar’s Champion, Arjac Rockfist. It’s no secret that he’s my personal favourite SW character thanks to his impressive “bang per buck” ratio and the fact that he can’t be targetted separately. Oh and when you do hit him he gets a 2+/3++ save and Eternal Warrior, nasty. Those shiny men of the moment the Grey Knights will be represented by two lots of Inquisitor Coteaz, Castellan Crowe and Grand Master Mordrak. I’m sure people are familiar with Crowe and Coteaz but I’m keen to see how Mordrak performs. Surprisingly no-one opted to bring along Draigo. We’ve lost a couple of Blood Angels players but Paul O’Boyle who stepped in last minute will be bringing Commander Dante and my mate Scott will be fielding the walking tank himself, Mephiston. The other space marine chapters will include a ‘counts as’ Chaplain Cassius for the Iron Hands from Jamie Jackson, Kayvaan Shrike for the Raven Guard, Vulkan Hestan joining the Relictors and Pedro Kantor of the Crimson Fists

With some delay, time to tell the saga of our 4th game from the Team Tournament, in which Vince’s Blood Angels joined forces with my Thunderwolves once again to wreak havoc upon the unfortunate ones. After game 3 ended, we were definitely feeling much better. I guess swift victory and carnage will do that.. Still hoping not to face any more Grey Knights (and perhaps Imperial Guard, because they are always annoying..) we picked up our stuff and headed towards our final destination…. It was time to meet our last opponents for the event with the hope of a fun, challenging game to end the tournament with. And then, Fate smiled upon us once again for we were destined to face.. Wardens of the Maelstrom From left to right: Mr. Malevolent, Solar_lion, Gitsplitta, Briancj from the DakkaDakka Forums! Yeah, fellas, that’s right.

Wow, just as I was finishing my Black Scorpion miniature for the contest, my Maelstrom miniatures Cynuise of Old, Barrow Knight Banner Bearer arrived at my mail box. Gosh, this year is gonna be a year for many other make and brands of miniatures coming to my collection and painting. With the GW embargo, just as I wanted to get a Vampire Count Wright Standard Bearer, I turned to the option of others. The closest I could find was Maelstrom new line of miniatures Banelegions. I ordered the Cynuise of Old, Barrow Knight Banner Bearer to be field as my Vampire Count Standard Bearer. Meantime, here’s my first impression. On Maelstrom store, the picture for the Cynuise of Old, Barrow Knight Banner Bearer does not reveal much details for the skeleton warrior. When I decided to order it, I wasn’t really expecting much of the details thought, but I was more interested in the banner, where I could freehand my Vampire icons… Out of the package, I was surprised that the Barrow Knight Banner Bearer comes in resin. All the while I was having the impression that the Banelegions miniatures are in the usual metal ones. Then the observation comes in, I noticed the details on the armour of the skeleton warrior.

My last Maelstrom order included a flyer for a range of miniatures made by ‘Forged in Battle’ a new company specialising in 15mm WW2 miniatures. Always on the look out for a bargain I did some internet trawling to check out comparisons between their range and those of Battlefront, the principle FOW supplier. Overall, the reviews are very favourable and consensus seems to be that this new supplier offers a solid alternative to the existing Battlefront range particularly when it comes to vehicles. The FiB range does, as you would expect, differ from Battlefront in the size of each model. But they are close enough to make them very workable and the differences are not that noticeable. More importantly they are significantly cheaper than the Battlefront products. For example a FiB German PzIV Platoon of 4 tanks can be ordered from Maelstrom for £16.20 or at the current exchange rate NZ$32. An equivalent boxed set from Battlefront in New Zealand would cost you NZ$85 for 5 tanks, or purchased as individual models NZ$68 plus postage for 4 tanks.

Major guilt trip this month after a nice financial windfall cleared up all of our debt outside the Mortgage and as a result I made a few sneaky Warhammer purchases. Delivery is going to my office so I can sneak them home, although my long suffering wife is bound to notice them as she is quite onto it. In my defence Maelstrom Games did have a big Easter Sale which knocked an additional 15-18% of the price of their WHFB products prices which are already 25% or more lower than anything New Zealand retailers charge…. not that such reasoning washes with the wives of gamers
Anyway winging their way to my office from Maelstrom should be: 2 boxes of the new Dragon Princes. My High Elf teammate Glen had a unit of these at Runefang and I thought they were fantastic so had to buy some. That and I really really hate the metal ones, damn things keep breaking and they never stand up properly. Really don’t know why I got one of these but Chariots have always been missing from my High Elf army so I guess having a Lion Chariot will be pretty cool. Two boxes of these guys coming my way as well primarily as I want to replace the older edition plastic models I have with the newer versions that have more surface area for the green colour scheme I am using. That and they look better when they have Great Weapons.

As you can see from the right of the page the Blog Wars tournament tickets are now available. Tickets are priced at £15 and there will be 40 available. If demand is high (which I don’t really expect) then I may be able to offer more tickets once I’ve confirmed availability with the venue. If you have any difficulties buying tickets either comment here or contact me using the link on the right. I’ve updated the event details on the Blog Wars page including a list of accepted codexes and details about the compulsory Special Character rule. If there are still any questions feel free to contact me and I’ll attempt to resolve them. Upon buying your ticket please specify your name (and blog), email address and the army you intend to use. Once people start buying tickets I’ll change the list on the page to reflect ticket sales and players/armies attending. In a few weeks time I’ll send out event packs to those who have purchased tickets.

Just a very quick update to point out that I’ve added a few more details to the Blog Wars page (see the tab on the top right) and I’ve tidied it up a bit too. It’s looking like Maelstrom will be the best option since their venue is free and the can offer reasonably priced catering too. For those of you not familiar with the concept, basically I’m planning on hosting an inter-blog tournament so that members of the blogging community can come together and put some faces to names. Anyone is welcome to attend and once we’ve got some confirmed details I’ll be posting them up and starting to sell tickets. These should hopefully be as cheap as possible! Any questions or suggestions feel free to contact me using the link on the right.
