Battle Report: Ravenwing vs Chaos Space Marines – 2,000 points

Down at Powerfist Gaming last night and played against a chap who goes by the name of Jon. I haven’t played against Jon before so will be interesting to see what he brings and how he plays. Sorry, didn’t take pics as had no intention of writing a bat rep. Was still in my mind so I thought I would get it written. Death Guard list with New Daemons

Death Guard list with New Daemons

So, I’ve been mulling over the Daemons book (thus not much from me since it came out), and I’m starting to settle on a core list to bring most of what I want from my Death Guard while also fitting in the Daemons units. For one thing, I am happy that I have all the models built to run this: Type Unit Cost HQ Chaos Lord 65 Mark of Nurgle 15 Bike 20 Lightning Claw 15 Sigil of Corruption 25 HQ Great Unclean One 190 Lesser Reward 10 Elite Helbrute 100 Troops Cultists 50 Troops Cultists 50 Troops Plague Marines 120 7 Marines 48 2x Plasma Gun 30 Power Weapon 15 Rhino 35 Troops Plague Marines 120 7 Marines 48 2x Plasma Gun 30 Power Weapon 15 Rhino 35 Troops Plague Marines 120 2x Melta Guns 20 Rhino 35 Troops Plague Bearers 14 Plaguebearers 121 Plagueridden 5 Lesser Reward 10 Fast Attack Chaos Spawn 5 Spawn 150 Mark of Nurgle 30 Fast Attack Blight Drone 125 Fast Attack Blight Drone 125 Heavy Support Daemon Prince 145 Wings 40 Warp Forged Armor 20 Daemon of Nurgle 15 Well, all but one, I forgot about the 5th Spawn. I have 2 from the GW kit and 2 kitbash/greenstuff projects. I need a 5th, I’m considering picking up a Nurgle Toad or two to run as Beasts of Nurgle in my Daemons, I may also run them as Spawn. (note, after composing this I used some tyranid bits to make a 5th spawn). The Bike Lord is built and painted. I’ve got the 3 Rhinos although they all need a bit of work before I can paint them. Most of the requisite Plague Marines are painted. The Helbrute is undercoated. The 20 Cultists (which are zombie conversions, I’m going to use them for Cultist squads when not using Typhus, thus differentiating my Death Guard cultists from my Red Corsairs cultists) are almost entirely assembled, and some have paint on them.

Ian’s Death Guard Hobby Update

Ian’s Death Guard Hobby Update

Over the few months since the CSM book dropped, I have been doing a lot of work on various units, from independent characters, to building custom mutilators, to starting work on 2 spawn made from greenstuff/bits. This progress has been slow due to grad school eating up a lot of my time, but I finished my last class on Saturday, so I’ve been trying to make a push to get my army ready to put on the table. I’ve got a few lists kicking around (along with a few that use more of the undivided elements in my Red Corsairs, but that’s a whole other article/series), and all of them include at least 2 Plague Marine squads in Rhinos. I’m also planning to get ~90 zombies in the near future, specifically building them from the affordable Wargames Factory Shock Troops , which while less detailed than GW kits, will likely mash well with the zombie kits from mantic. I’m going to model them with pistols and knives so I can still run them as cultists for my death guard, enabling me to have different cultists for my two CSM forces, so I can run them solo or together. I built a lot of my CSM force last year, scuplting Plague Marines and converting loyalists into what would become my Red Corsair units. The army was setup with six Rhinos, all of which I planned to paint in the Corsairs scheme. But, at some point I picked up a spare set of Death Guard Rhino bits, so it was only a matter of time before I built a transport especially for my Plague Marines (The Blinded Eyes Warband). When I picked up the Megaforce this winter, I got a new Rhino Chassis, which kicked off a bit of a conversion spree. I built the Rhino and converted two more over to the corrupting influence of Nurgle

Ian’s Hobby Update: CSM Modeling

Ian’s Hobby Update: CSM Modeling

It has been a few months (well, in reality, almost a year) since I started working on a reboot of my CSM. With rumors of a new book (which came true, of course), I really wanted to be able to hit the ground running. I didn’t anticipate becoming distracted with a major project, building an entirely new Space Marine army from scratch, so I had originally intended to have my CSM as my main army as of October. That hasn’t yet come to pass, mostly because I’m relatively anal about what I put on the table, I try to avoid anything that isn’t at least base painted. The fact that flyers have been so important early in this edition has also been something of a limiting factor, I find myself wishing I had a Heldrake and a Valkyrie in my budget, as that would make my CSM much more viable. That said, I’ve made a bunch of progress getting everything online, and now have 2 Blight Drones mounted on proper flying bases. Primarily, I have been focused on getting my Death Guard warband together, but some of my work has also gone into Red Corsairs. In fluff terms, the Death Guard warband has been active in the malestrom and joined the Red Corsairs fleet because Huron Blackheart has been positioning himself to launch his own Black Crusade. Seeing the opportunity to spread despair they join after being convinced by one of Blackheart’s Dark Apostles. This gives me fluff reasons to introduce other units as I expand on my already large CSM model collection.

Moving on with our tour of the Death Guard armory, we come to the Elites section. I will deal with Plague Marines in the Troops entry, as the Elites section is already packed with fluffy options. Chosen Chosen

Tactica: top CSM units

Tactica: top CSM units

The new Chaos Space Marine codex has created quite a stir for the 40k players; it’s not as hot as some thought it would be, especially for a Phil Kelly codex and many people are disappointed. While I am one of those people, I am not going to be down and out about and instead will work with and enjoy what I have :) . In no particular order, here’s the top CSM units in the codex: 1. Typhus Typhus is great for a Death Guard army; he’s a double multiplier and lets Plague Marines become troops and Cultists become zombies – how cool is that? I know Typhus has gone up in points, but look at his profile, it’s pretty beefy. He also comes with the manreaper, which is a S6 AP2 unwieldy force daemon weapon, which is great as Typhus is handy in close combat and is also a mastery level 2 psyker. Do not forget the destroyer hive, which is a bit of a gimmick I admit, but it is a funky bonus. Best Use – put him in a unit of Zombie Cultists along with a Dark Apostle. Mooch up and cause carnage while the Apostle lets Typhus re-roll to hit in combat and also re-roll on the boon chart. Do not forget to split Typhus from the unit when you want to use the destroyer hive; it affects your models too! 2

Death Guard Playtesting: First List

Death Guard Playtesting: First List

I’ve been putting off play testing my CSM due to not having the units I want. The fact is though, I actually have enough units to try out some interesting combos. I have a unit of havocs with 4 newly converted autocannons (Conceived of as the “Reaper” from A Thousand Sons, I cut the barrels off some Assault Cannons and attached to some heavy bolter marines). I also have a unit with 4 Missile Launchers that I just base coated. Add in my Nurgle Lord on a Bike and the ape hanger bikers I recently converted, and there’s some serious threat to put on the table. Since I don’t have the Chimeras I need to run my traitor guard (using cultist models with autoguns, I’m planning to bulk up their armor a bit with plasticard), I am planning to use Codex: Daemons for my Ally slot. Yes, I take allies most of the time now. Since my favorite model is my Great Unclean One, I’m going to choose him as my ally HQ. I’ll drop him in my preferred wave, and most of the time that will mean he disrupts my opponent’s lines early on.

Army Lists: the best CSM list?

Army Lists: the best CSM list?

I think I am in the same boat as everyone else and think that the CSM codex is a little glum and disappointing. I guess I was expecting something more, something funky, just like previous codex’s, I guess everyone else was too. But, we will have to make do and use the best of what we have available. So what exactly can we do? Well I’ve to the conclusion that a nurgle themed list is probably the way to go. Reason for this is you can get cool zombies, uber tough smashy HQ and wickedly tough Chaos Bikers. Add in the normal Plague Marines (who got slightly improved) and you’re laughing. Chaos Space Marines ‘best nurgle list?’ – unlimited points HQ Typhus Chaos Lord – power fist, blight grenades, chaos bike, sigil of corruption & mark of nurgle Dark Apostle – mark of nurgle Troops 7 x Plague Marines – 2 x plasma guns 7 x Plague Marines – 2 x plasma guns 7 x Plague Marines – 2 x plasma guns 7 x Plague Marines – 2 x plasma guns 7 x Plague Marines – 2 x meltaguns 7 x Plague Marines – 2 x meltaguns 30 x Chaos Cultists 30 x Chaos Cultists Fast Attack Heldrake – baleflamer 6 x Chaos Bikers – 2 x meltaguns & mark of nurgle 4 x Chaos Spawn – mark of nurgle Heavy Support 3 x Obliterators – mark of nurgle 5 x Havocs – 4 x autocannons 5 x Havocs – 4 x autocannons I know the points for this list is high, about 2,800. I am sure it can be scaled down if you like, but this actual list is just unlimited points. Would it get thrashed by other lists at this point level?
