I have played Imperial Guard for almost 9 months and during that time have came across many players that think imperial guard are the worst army in the 40K system. I am just wondering if there are any non-guard players who think they don't suck.
Thanks for your time.
Proud commander of the Calamarian 81st'Hmmm..., I don't seem to have enough guns'
*Moved to 40k armies
yes, the ability to have the bestest tank (bassie) in the universe and the awesomeness that is senitals sucks. oh yeah...
well maybe they think they suck cause all some people do is stand there and try and shoot you
*GASP* I know it's so much fun!
guard don't suck, it's just there troops (which get pwned by spinegaunts)
bring in some bassies and make those fools cry!
Create flames for a galaxy and it will be warm. Put a galaxy in flames and it will be warm for the rest of it's existence.
Guardsmen do suck but that’s why when they go to battle they bring 40 or 50 of there buddies.
There are few armies that your appoint can kill a whole squad and you just shrug and say eh I've got four or five more. I mean a good guard tactic is to use one squad as a sacrificial squad and when it dies let the other squads blast the enemy unit to bits, also how many armies regularly call there Veterans suicide droop squads. Guard suck only because if you look at them wrong they die. They have poor amour and bad saves but you get a lot of them, and any one will say the tanks are awesome. I mean my two Basilisks and Hellhounds take more fire then my Leman Russ.
If you do things right people wont be sure if you have done anything at all.
No-one thinks the guard suck, I think even the people who have been telling you that know how annoying it is when they shoot you with 30 odd lascannons a turn and you have to kill 200 models before you even start touching the lascannons...
Imperial Guard are just the butt of many jokes. Things like the lasgun flashlight and whatnot.
Personally I find guard by far the hardest army to defeat, my dire avengers disembark, shoot a unit to death then an ordnance blast falls on em. I lose 150 odd points and you lose 75 odd points.

If anyone wants any kind of help writing fluff for any kind of GW army just ask.
I agree with Link- somany cheap units that can take potentially dangerous weaponry.
It's always a trade-off, the average Guardsmen is sacrificed to get his job done.... Guard lose an 80 point unit, you lose 100+.
You slaughter a Guard unit, but you will have probably left yourself vulnerable to the other 60 men waiting to shoot you

For instance, in huge point games, IG are highly favored. Nobody, and I mean nobody can put as much high explosive/flashlighty death on the table than the guard.
Extreme statements often evoke extreme counters. I'll try to be more balanced.
40k has always had a power curve amongst the armies. There are pretty much two levels to this curve. The curves are characterized by two questions:
How strong is this list for new players?
What can a good player do to "break" the list?
The New Player:
Guard are a challenging army for a new player. The utter lack of obvious counters to assault armies means that a player's first few battles with guard consist of whittling down the oponenent in the first two turns and then getting eaten in melee. For a new player, they will certainly seem to, ahem "suck".
The Experienced Player:
I'm not going to lie, they are a challenge, even for a good player. But the key word here is "challenge", not autoloss. The IG Codex has incredible flexibility, most of which adds flavor, not power. If you are the "play-to-win" type, Guard has a lot to offer. This is especially true with the addition of allies. But for this conversation we should talk about the Pure Imperial Guard.
Now for that Power Curve. I've used Chaos (3.5ed), Traited Marines, Necrons, Eldar, Tau and Imperial Guard in the last few months. I have to admit, Guard are actually lower in the power curve when playing Min/Maxed all-comers builds. They are simply a less forgiving army. That being said, they can also have a game in the bag by turn 2 vs. some builds.
My advice, bring more lascannons, pile on the plasma, learn the art of melee-resistant deployment, don't expect an autowin army. Pray the Tyranid player didn't take scuttlers

I've been addicted to World of Tanks lately and neglecting my IG... But it is so... much... fun!
I am a guard player, so I suppose this question isn't addressed to me, however...I have played Imperial Guard for almost 9 months and during that time have came across many players that think imperial guard are the worst army in the 40K system. There have been many occassions where I have encountered someone who believes that IG suck, and go on to loudly proclaim this fact in front of everyone, especially if I (or another IG player) have just started getting my army out.
There's nothing more awesome then challenging them to a game, and watching as they get quieter and quieter as the game goes on. There was this one guy who was saying how he would wipe me out by turn 2 or 3, wherupon he could play another game against someone else there.
When I had finished wiping out the last of his iron warriors, losing only a squad of infantry or so myself, he packed up silently and left the store. He didn't play his mate, and didn't buy the stuff he had been planning to buy after the game either. He just left.
I guess i'm trying to say that people who believe IG suck do not actually know very much about the game, or how to play it properly. They might say they do, and they might even believe it, but they really are quite clueless.
I mean, try fighting against a well balanced all infantry IG army in 1500 points or higher, controlled by a competent opponent. Thats a lot of ouch they will be throwing your way, and it wont be easy to reduce all those units below scoring strength!
(And note, has anyone else noticed that the mega apocalypse army deal for 'nids "the endless swarm" is a box deal for about 120 gaunts, whereas the IG equivalent gives you like 180 guardsmen or something?! Thats kinda amusing )
IG are not the most forgiving army to field, however once you get it under your belt, you will find them to be a very powerful option. Just like most of the other army choices out there!

Also, you should google "garfield minus garfield". Awesome.
in my personal experience playing against guard they have their ups and down. they were the only army to ever wipe out a third of my tau army. FIRST TURN! i then proceeded to wipe him off the board and win, but he was a bad general. my point is, guard have a lot at their disposal when it comes to firepower. but they tend a to be very immobile, which was the reason why i won. so guard take some talent in playing, it's not just the point and shoot everyone says it is.
