    Kroot Mercenaries?

    I was wondering: how many of you other players have gone against a kroot mercenary army and what do you think of them?

    I play Tau and really like Kroot, so I want to try the Merc army, but the Kroot Merc sub-forum always seems pretty empty.

    From the looks of it, though, it can really tear *stuff* up (all infiltrate, Winged, 2D6 Fleet [pick the highest dice], and the cheapest Snipers in 40k). (Almost) Garunteed charge on turn one, with Initiative 4.

    By themselves I bet they would be an alright army, but I really hate them with any Tau cadres, they just suck up points for fluff I really don't need.

    They are not bad all around, the only down side I can see is that they have a distinct lack of ranged AT weaponry. Though I suppose you can try to chase down tanks with eviserators...

    While I think they're really, really cool, I don't feel that they're a competetive army, because in many tournaments (at least the ones around here) many rules like Infiltrate and the like aren't used for many of the missions.

    Imagine having to foot slog your way across the board when you're facing an Imperial Guard army or something... ick.

    I don't see the foot slogging being too much of a downside when its paired with improved fleet/wings. Also depending on terrain you can still take good advantage of field craft and possible start plinking away at the enemy with little to no return fire.

    Kroot mercs just makes you think on placement on tactics from the few games i've played with them, though taking anything other than ork hybrid or fast reflexes seems silly to me.

    Actually the best take is no take!

    The lack of SEAs means you can fit an extra 20 models in your army, which is definitively good!

    But on the other side, believe me that the best SEA there is award goes to "bold": you just can't imagine what it means for a 35man unit to be reduced to 17 models, fail their leadership roll and flee off the table without the possibility of being rallied...

    That is what many an opponent said when I told them what I was playing.

    But the fact that you can field effectively 130 close combat, infiltrating fighters with hidden power fists.

    Add on some 60-70 models able to have a first turn assault and it's not that bad after all!

    Only problem is that kroot tend to be single-planned: you pray to go first and you assault against shooty armies. Against hth armies you stand still and shoot you rifles, then counterassault as best as you can.

    You should really play against them to get a fair idea of their possibilities.

    And on the up side: the face people make when they see all the models in inflitration...
