Basically I found the percentages of people on the army sub forums.
Here are the results...
Space Marines 15.6%
Imperial Guard 10.5%
Tau Empire 9.9%
Dark Eldar 3.8%
Kroot Mercs 0.5%
I wouldn't trust these results with my life although they do give a general idea of army popularity, very useful when writing a 'take all comers list' as you know will know how much of your army should be specialized toward each type of enemy.
how did you find the amount of people there? All I can see is the post/thread count. And even so... I have been answering in threads belonging to other armies the what I play myself.

Go into the sub menu '40k Armies' and you can see the number of people viewing the sub forum at any given time. And yes, I know people will talk in threads that they don't play the army of. This is why this information is not very reliable but reather a general guide to numbers in each race.
That's pretty interesting, but I would personally go by threads and posts over user usage.
In which you'll find it's:
Let's see I go on different forums, and what about people with multiple armies? I have a Space Marine and Nid (not much) army, so I go to their subforums, and other ones to see how people try to beat them (and how to avoid the weaknesses altogether) and all that
and not to mention most players are marines and some will switch to the new chaos (WS 7 Daemon Prince FTW, and lash of summission, hurrah for ordinance!)
so your research is mostly void, go make a poll and find out what army is mostly used
Create flames for a galaxy and it will be warm. Put a galaxy in flames and it will be warm for the rest of it's existence.
I wouldn't go that far. I think Krox has been quite clever.
BUT the overall threads thing is a good indication of how popular an army is over time.
The point about multiple armies is also kinda moot, as it doesn't matter. We contribute to all the armies we participate in
It's not exact - but Krox never said it was.. but i think it DOES give a good indication.
Based on purely anecdotal evidence, the Guard number seems incredibly inflated compared to the amount of actual players I encounter a the local store.
This overrepresentation is obviously because IG players are opinionated, vocal and are procrastinating rather than painting guardsman #55 in platoon #1.
Oh ... wait... that's just me...

RecklessFable's Journey to Mediocrity (Painting an IG army)
I've been addicted to World of Tanks lately and neglecting my IG... But it is so... much... fun!
Well, I can definitely believe some of the results. We DE are a pretty small community, and out actual numbers are something like 1 in every 200 players play DE. But Nidz and Orks are the most popular armies where I am.
I'm surprised that Tau isn't higher...
I think that Karmoon has it right on the money with Marines, Chaos, then Nids. These three armies tend to be the first army of many many players, myself included.
Thus, it can be extrapolated that since there tends to be alot of new players, or older players with small armies they're working on, they tend to pick one of those three armies. Of course, this isn't always the case, as there are several people have started with Eldar and even Dark Eldar in my area.
Only afterwards do people tend to look to branch out and try out new stuff. Stick with the simple to learn, then challenge oneself.
I'm very surprised that Ork is so low! At my local gaming store, it seems like one out of three people has a least some sort of ork army (usually speed freaks or Feral).
I play my 40k with friendly fire.
Finally fixed the link!
