I play a variety of troops and enemies. I have developed some ideas of what individual strengths and weakness for the main troops are, and would like your input.
SM/ Chaos - Strength: Versatile, tough, basic trooper in power armor
Weakness: Not excellent in any one area, can be expensive, small numbers, vulnerable to plasma, high AP weapons
Eldar - Strength: Shooty and with good psykers
Weakness: Expensive elites, not very tough, not great in CC
Necs- Str: tough, good shooters, WBB, Teleport, strong HQ, Elites
Weakness: Extremely low I makes weak CC, vulnerable to ordinance
Tyranids- Str: Awesome CC, Infestation, cheap, Strong elites
W: Vulnerable to ranged fire, ordinance
Orks- Str: cheap, great CC, tough
W: Can't hit broad side of the barn, weak leadership,
Guard- Str: cheap, lots of variety, lots of armor, ordinance
W: weak in CC, low strength, weak basic weap (lasgun)
What did I miss?

For the last time, there are
NO FEMALE SPACE MARINES!!!!!
I would put chaos and space marines in to seperate sections, they are very simillar but Ive seen some really neat chaos demon heavy armies, which look really cool and are very different from standard chaos armies. Necrons arent bad in cc at all, theyre just slow, they are very resiliant in cc and if theyre in cover the low I is disregarded, relatively high stats in all areas in my oppinion. Apart from that it all sounds good!
Tau aren't on their either...
Tau - Strength: Excellent choice of weaponary in their armourary, some of the strongest weapons your going to find in 40k, nice wargear available for all models (not many army gives you the option of giving almost everything in your army an inv save) Crisis suits rock!
Weakness: The actual models have poor stats, despite excellent weapons their acuracy isnt exceptional, very weak in cc most standard troops could easily defeat Tau in cc.
Why dont we try and post each chapter of space marines as they are simillar different chapter have their strengths and weaknesses?

Chaos is very versatile, but alot of the models are very point heavy. Unless you are going to play large games, you probably are not going to ues all that chaos has to offer

Dark Eldar: Strength- incredibly fast, capable of attacking when and where they want to. Plenty of units that make conventional tactics against them fail.
W- Low armor, low toughness
sisters are EXTREMELY short ranged.....I can't think of any strengths, accept that their short range is their only weekness. Kinda makes them capable of anything.
Course when the new codex comes out they will be extremely strong with close combat.
