It'd be brilliant!
I could go for that...
Either way works for me?
Would not please me
Wait, there are gods in 40K?
I was just wondering what all of you imperium players would think about the Machine God of the Adeptus Mechanicus being revealed as the Void Dragon (Necron God).
Here's the thing, I wouldn't mind if the Dragon was revealed to be the Machine God that the Adeptus Mechanicus have been worshipping all this time but it would create a schism that would rip the Imperium apart at the seams. Yes, I mean the Imperium because like it or not, the Imperium depends on the Mechanicus to build their ships and run the cogs of their society as much as any other organisation and a mass schism would be disastrous. It would literally be the End. Of course, it would finally give confirmation so that one way or another, we could at least have a definite answer. It is not explicitly stated that the Dragon is the Machine God, but is heavily implied so I can definitely see where people would believe it, but I still refuse to believe that this is the case unless GW actually issues a press release stating that the Dragon is the Machine God.
In the meantime, it's one of my pet hates when people start saying it as if it was unquestionable fact when really, it's not.
It will never happen because it will cause the imperium to fracture, leaving the imperium open to alien attack (which they have barely been able hold off I might add!) and to invasions through the Cadian gate and the maelstrom. In the case that humanity manages to survive the galaxy will revert back to the age of strife or worse...
Now the necron ships that infiltrated mars, does the fluff say that they tried to unearth the "dragon" , if not they could have been dropping him off...?

it wont happen for aforementioned reasons.
Now, thats not to say that there isn't a possible course of events that could allow it, but GW can't really go there because the WH40K storyline needs to stay where it is. Any massive development like that will essentially ruin the status quo.
fear the smurfs
You guys talk about the imperium not being able to survive schism, but what was the horus heresy? One huge schism in the imperium. It would sort of be like a repeat of that. Personaly, I think it would be pretty cool if they revealed the machine god was the void dragon because it would make for some incredible fluff, especialy to see what the imperium has to do to adapt to this change.
One thing tho, all the imperium vehicles have machine spirits in them. If the Machine God is the void dragon, if he was to wake up, wouldn't all the vehicles in the imperium suddenly start attacking humanity all on their own? Suddenly a bassilisk is dropping shells on gaurdsmen, and maybe a land raider suddenly mows over the squad that was hiding behind it. And what about dreadnaughts? Would there suddenly be some kind of internal war going on between the pilot and the machine spirit for control of the walker and his soul making them all crazy like chaos dreds?
I strongly believe the Void Dragon is the Machine God and that his awakening would cause a massive schism. The real question isn't "will the Void Dragon awaken", it is "will GW awaken the Void Dragon"? The answer to this question is dependent on whether or not GW is ready to move on to the next chapter of the 40K universe or not, because everything will change. The schism would be exciting but GW has to be ready to move on.
I was commenting in another thread about such a change when someone expressed a wish that GW release a Leman Russ model for Space Wolves. The problem with any story where Leman Russ has returned is that the a good portion of 40K universe has to move on as well. The same applies to the issue at hand, except it's on a much large scale.

it IS implied that the Machine God is one of the C'Tan..... but the thing is if he "awakens" then the implerium will more or less collapse, leading to the (almost) utter annihilation of the human race. that pretty much means that unless GW doesnt want people to play space marines, imperial guard, witch hunter and daemon hunters anymore (they would all pretty muh die if the imperium collapsed), then they wont awaken the Void Dragon.
p.s. the imperium would not survive the schism because during the Horus Heresy, Robute Guilliman had a full legion of ~150,000 marines at his command, and, as i understand it, the pressure on the imperium just after the heresy was not as much as now. we had pretty much beaten chaos back for a while, so gulliman just had to worry about the alien incursions (minor problem) and reestablishing imperium control over the ~50% of the planets that threw their lots in w/ horus. keep in mind, that at that time, "alien incursions" consisted of: eldar and orks. Crons werent up and running til recently, tau didnt even develop out of the stone age til M38(ish) nids didnt show up til mid M41. dark eldar were (hypothetically working off of info from the fall and codex, this IS NOT explicitly stated)fighting among themselves to work out the pecking order in commorangh @ the time of Gulliman fighting off the incursions too.
Shouldn't this be in fluff section? I think IG, Necrons, and Chaos all need to have their say in this poll.
And I do believe the omnissiah is the Dragon.
