    I'm building a shooty vanilla marines army. I'd like a unit to have some sniper weapons. Either I'll upgrade two or three marines in a anti-troops squad to deathwatch and give them the M40 sniper upgrade, or drop a tac squad for a sniper-rifle rich scout squad. What's more effective?

    TOTAL: 2000pts.

    HQ (176)
    76 Chaplain w/Crosius Arcanum, BP, Teleport Homer.
    100 Commander in Termie armor w/dual Lightning claws.

    ELITES (610)
    140 Dreadnought w/SB, TL-Hbolter, Extra Armor.
    220 Term Squad w/1 Heavy Flamer.
    250 Term Squad w/2 cyclone ML's.

    FAST ATTACK (65)
    65 Land speeder w/Multi Melta

    HEAVY SUPPORT (230)
    155 5x Devastator Squad w/4x ML
    75 Whirlwind Missle Battery

    TROOPS (921)
    250 9x Tac Squad w/Meltagun, V. sarg w/Plas Pistol and PF. in rino.
    193 9x Tac Squad w/Plasmagun, H. Bolter, V. sarg w/dual L.claws and crack grenades.
    90 5x Tac Squad w/LC
    90 5x Tac Squad w/LC

    and either this:
    85 5x Tac Squad w/ML
    211 10x Tac Squad w/Plasmagun, H. Bolter, V.sarg w/Storm Bolter,
    x2 deathwatch marines with m40targeter and stalker ammo.

    or this:

    181 10x Tac Squad w/Plasmagun, H.Bolter, Vsarg w/SB.
    114 7x Scouts x6 w/sniper rifles.


    scouts means two more bodies and two more sniper shots. But worse saves, and loss of a missle launcher.
    The scouts have better range, but worse AP...
    What should I do?

    If I recall, the eldar sniper rifle gets an auto-kill on a to-hit roll of 6.
    Do SM sniper rifles do that too? There&#39;s no entry for them in codexM.

    no SM snipers do not get the automatic kill. Personally i would go with the snipers. if you are in a mission with infiltrators you can get them closer and still have the added distance over the M.40 bolters. and if you fire the M.40 you can&#39;t move the rest of the squad, whereas with the scouts you wouldnt have to move them in the first place.

    Not to mention your shooting will improve you hit on a 2+ with those rifles, though horde armies might be a nightmare for you such as nids (maybe)

    Drat, no insta-kill. Maybe they&#39;ll change that in 4th ed(along with storm shields...fingers crossed).

    I thought snipers where mostly good vs. horde armies. &#39;Nids will ignore pinning, but I&#39;m hoping to tie down IG and ork infantry. Then my whirlwind and tac squads can chew them up.

    Personnally - and I play a shooty nilla marines army - I would ditch the termies, they cut a huge amount of guns out the army.

    Then:
    take 6 man squads, give em missile launchers, if you must give em a special weapon, make it a plasma gun, and mount em in a razorback with TL las cannon, the squad starts out therazorback, which plays tank shooting, and off you go, load of these,
    take a single scout sniper squad for anti G demon, C&#39;Tan and wraithlord duties,
    your Chaplain is begging for Termie honours
    Ditch the termie armour off your Commander - give him termie honours and an IH
    Have a single squad equiped for combat, either an assult squad, a full tac squad or a scout squad
    Everything you have been told is a lie!
