I'm about to start building a Black Templars Army. I just think it's so damn cool to go charging in and hacking Orkies and traitors with a chainsword or whatever. but im a little stuck at where to begin.
I was gonna field an army that was quite assault-oriented as that's what Black Templar are ment to do. You know, close combat weapons and bolt pistols every Initiate and the majority of the Neophytes, Terminators with power fists and storm bolters, and the like. I'm just not the kind of person who sits back there like a Tau and shooting everything.
I've already got a start with a five-man Terminator squad and an Assault squad with as many men. The Assault squad has standard issue weapons (bolt pistols, close combat weapons, frag grenades). The Terminator squad has one man with a power weapon (substituted for a power fist), one a heavy flamer (in place of the storm bolter), and the rest are armed with power fists and storm bolters. I purchased them off a friend who had no use for them. Pretty kind of him.
Anywho, anyideas on how to expand to create a good army are welcome. Thanks a lot.
Well, first off I wouldn't use Terminators in games under 1500pts, they're too expensive and fragile. You need some Troops. I suggest 2 boxes of Space Wolves Blood Claws (to represent your BP&CCW Troops). Also, buy a Space Marine Combat Squad box (5 Models). Then buy a Special Weapons blister and a Heavy Weapons (preferably Lascannon) blister. There, you have a solid Troops choice. Then, you'll obviously need the Emperor's Champion, and another H.Q. Go for a Chaplain, because he comes with cool stuff for free (sorry, can't post rules). After that, use the Assault Squad as well, and finally get some a Vehicle of some sort for Heavy Support (Whirlwinds are good IMO). Maybe get Rhino's for the Troops to be Transported. Good luck!
It would really depend on which army you'll be going up against. Personally, I keep a squad of Assault Terminators with Thunder Hammers and Storm Shields around, since I fight the Necrons a lot. Those two pieces of equipment have saved my life countless times.
Also, Black Templars tend to have pretty high casualty rates (what with their Righteous Zeal rule) so masses and masses of Troops are pretty much necessary.

Well, I know I'll need a lot of troops, but I don't want to waste points on heavy weapons. I want to field as many troops as possible, so I'm not going to blow points to put a heavy weapon in a squad of grunts (at least not all the Troop squads). As for the Chaplain, wouldn't a Marshal or High Marshal be better? I mean, they can be equipped with a wide varity of wargear, so wouldn't they be more flexible? Is it possible to get ccw and bolt pistol bits by themselves? I was planning to use a Dreadnought with a lascannon arm for heavy support, even though it's an Elite. Tanks like the Whirlwind just seem like to much trouble at the moment. And I was going to get Rhinos for Transport, but a friend recommended I should use a Land Raider Crusader to tranport the Terminators. I know I need the Emperor's Champion, kind of a given with BT. I also need to know how to take on Daemons of all kinds. They look kinda freaky. I don't think I'll be playing Necrons much, I'm more likely to enounter the shooty Tau or frail Eldar. I also HATE Orks. Thanks for a general idea.
Ok the first thing that I have to say is no matter how much you like cc DON'T CHARGE A KHORNE DP OR BLOOD THIRSTER. I fought a dp and lost a 10 man assault squad, 1 chaplin, and 15 initates to it. I of 9 and 9 attacks that ignore armor saves are kind of depressing. Anyway I would buy at least 2 boxes of blood claws for your troops. Then buy another with a bag of jump packs to finish off your assault squad. Rhino's are a must for you. Despite you not wanting to shoot alot with troops I will suggest that you buy a combat squad and a plasma cannon marine. That small squad is very capable.

I wouldnt suggest the LRC under at or under 1500 pts either. I would recommend dropping the termies and just mass up on troops and rhinos. I would go against the Whirlwind because with all the troops you will have plenty of anti-infantry. I would suggest either a Predator Annihilator or a Devastator Squad with lascannons or plasma cannons or missile launchers(depending on the army). So yeah you should go with the Chaplain. They can have the same wargear and it is really cheap for all the stuff you are going to be killing with it. Put on a jump pack and send him around with your assault squad. Yes, so definitely start out with two or maybe three boxes of Blood Claws and just cut, file, etc. all the Space Wolves markings off. That is a great way to get cc weapons. I would also suggest maybe getting at least 5 marines with bolters just to back up your advancing cc troopers.
Hope I helped

OK, first off, what's wrong with Terminators? Just curious. And I can see what you guys are saying by getting Space Wolves Blood Claws, nice way to get ccw's. But as for the Predator Annihilator or SM Devastators, I'm not really sure. I was thinking about getting a Dreadnought and giving him a lascannon arm. I disagree ith the idea about the plasma cannon, it could take out the troop wielding it with a bad roll. Wouldn't a lascannon or a meltagun be better? That Assault squad I got already had jump packs on them, so what do you mean by this? I just need some clarification, thats all. Thanks for the ideas. Then buy another bag of jump packs to finish off your assault squad.
Plasma weps are dangerous for other armies, but Space Marines rarely get burned. 1in 6 it backfires, then you get a 3+ armor save. That's like a 1/18 chance of losing a guy. No biggie.

Ok well what he means by mentioning the jump packs is that you can purchase them without having to buy the assault troop box which means any normal troops you buy can have the jumppacks attached to them if you wish.
Ok well i have a 2500 point BT army and one thing you will want is some heavy support other than just one dreadnaught. one dread will die very very early in the game, if you use two which are tooled up for long range combat it will be much better but also having a predator will help greatly in taking out any vehicles that the enemy may have. as for the HQ depending on how large an army you have, i would have the emp champion.... unfortunately, and a chaplain with jumppack to start with, and have him with the assault squads to bolster there strenght. if you feel like expanding on the termies and a high marshal i would give the highmarshal termie armour and lightning claws with a retinue of termies with a mix of thunder hammer and SS(storm sheilds) and lightning claws to add great CC ability and to finish this awsome squad i put mine in a LRC. i have 2 squads with 10 initiate and no neophytes with cc weps and 1 squad with 10 marines with bolters to ass some balance. other then this i have some tanks i switch between.
If you have any more questions on expanding your army feel free to PM me or if you need some help with tactics.
Im not sure if some people may like the suggestions but my personal army is just like this and have had much success.
Oh almost forgot, there is nothing wrong with termies, its just that you get a lot less for a lot more points with them and in small armies you will devote large amounts of points to the termies where they could be better spent on more troops
OK, that's pretty convincing. Now I don't have a High Marshal as of yet. Any ideas on where I could find one? I already said I have Terminators, five of them. I also believe I mentioned what they're armed with. And I'll definitely go ahead and get a Chaplain and strap him to a jump pack. I'll toss a Predator into the mix as well. I'm in the planning stage at the moment, but i definitely intend to expand ASAP. Thanks again.
