My current armies are all based on shooting and often avoid close combat or only use it to mop up remaining models.
So what I’m looking for now is one or two armies that are based on getting up in close quarters and slicing the enemy to pieces. So other than Orks, what other army would excel in the close combat style of play I’m looking for?
Chaos daemons and Dark Eldar are pretty brutal in combat. My cheesy ork nob list got eaten by a dark eldar wych cult army a couple of weeks ago. I know nids used to be a horrible army to face in combat but I haven't played against them since 5th edition came out so I'm not sure how good they are now.
Personally I like orks best for combat just for the look on someone's face when a few green walking fungus monsters pummel their army in combat. Nob bikers led by a warboss on a bike are my favourite unit at the moment, the only thing their afraid of is hellhounds, wyches and other nobs.
Your machine cult is awesome by the way!

My blog - http://wingsofsanguinius.blogspot.com
Been here nearly 10 years and still haven't managed 500 posts.
Khorne daemons or marines (zerkers) are very good CC armies, dark eldar wytch cults are good but I would wait for them to get an update before starting DE, I would avoid nids as I don't think they are that good right now IMO.
If you do daemons though be sure you are willing to spend the money as you will need atleast 8 bloodcrushers (2 units of 4 works well) I take some tnzeetch for extra anti-tank although 1-2 BT and 2-3 soulgrinders will work just fine for anti-tank if you want to keep it fluff based.

Nids are still strong in cc if you build them right. Genestealers destroy anything with their initiative 6, fleet and rending. Warriors with leaping and rending are sweet too. And don't forget about a supped up CCfex with 12 possible S9 attacks, and 5 wounds at T7

well if you are looking for 5:th ed armies you will have to wait for new DE and new CSM so it's only orks atm on the other hand marines prolyl work excelelntly for cc as well as everything else.
nids have been nerfed by the new cc rules as they really get hurt by not being in close combat after they wipe out the enemy so I wouldn't go with nids. also new rending rules has really been hurting the viability of stealer lists.
Chaos marines are great as they get so many attacks in CC.
Here are my picks (in no particular order):
Black Templars (plus they're quick so they get into combat sooner than you think)
Chaos Daemon Slaanesh or Khorne armies
Chaos Marine Khorne
I don't know what these people are saying, but Nids are still pretty scary.
Ork Mobz... ugh.
Dark Eldar are going to be up there as well.
Fantasy: Daemons (Angels), 40k: Black Templars
Probably Dark Eldar, because they can get there without being hurt, and likle orks you shouldn't be afraid to chrge anything and everything into combat.
Tyranid hormagaunt heavy armies are similar to orks, as hormaguns are faster but orksare stronger. Like dark eldar and orks, neaerly eerything should be in combat.
Dark eldar, wyches and incubi are some of most brutal CC units, and also some of the fastest. They can reliably get in CC safely (especially with a webway portal...) so you dont need to spend all your points in them, allowing you to buy good shooting units, like ravagers.
