hey all . I'm new to the hobby and there is so much to to see and read that its all kinda over whelming . so i was hoping that the veterans at this could point me in the right direction. After reading and lurking on the GW website i have picked the Black Templar army but i have no idea where to go from here any advice would be wonderful
First of all, you're going to need a 5th edition rulebook. It might seem a bit pricey, but it's a good buy with all of the extra fluff (background story) and things like that. As an alternative, you can buy the Assault on Black Reach boxed set, which includes some Space Marines (which may be painted up and used as Black Templars) and some Orks (which you can then sell or keep for some spare models) as well as a miniature version of the rulebook (it includes all the rules you'll need to play, just none of the fluff or painting extras).
After that, make sure you get your Black Templars rulebook, or codex. It should run you around $15-20 tops at your local GW or hobby store or online. After that, I encourage you to browse the Space Marines forum looking at various army lists and threads that pertain to Black Templars or just Space Marines in general.
Familiarize yourself with your codex and the rules and go to a local shop and see if anyone there would be willing to help you with a couple introductory games.
Finally, if you have any further questions, don't hesitate to PM a member on these forums or post a thread with your questions in the Space Marines forum (if they pertain to your army) or the 40k Rules Help/Fluff/etc. forums (if they pertain to the rules/fluff/etc.).
Let us know if you need anything else, and good luck with your Black Templars!
