I currently play the new IG and they satisfy my sit-back-and-bomb-the-shizzle-out-of-things needs quite well. I need to know what the most viable armies are in terms of actually winning battles that mainly like to get up in close combat, of course I have no issue with some range but I just really wanna get up in peoples faces and smash!
So far I have been suggested by friends:
-Chaos Space Marines with the right list
-Dark Eldar to a degree and with the right list, but I would only buy them after the new codex comes out (if it does?). Also they are not really as beefy as I would prefer but they do look freaking cool XD!
What do you all think? Thanks in advance!
CSM really do quite nicely in assault, as do orks - 'nids haven't done so well in games I've watched lately, although I'm not sure if they just don't do well against MEQ or the guy playing them was useless.
Blood angels. Gotta love the berserk black rageing death company. The jump packing, chainsword wielding maniacs with FNP, Rending, Furious Charge and re-rolls to hit with a chappy on the charge are just unstoppable. Plus you can get honour guard with jump packs and some very nice assault veterans that cost 10 pts more than a squad of the regular assault marines and each get an extra attack! Assault Termies in a Crusader fit nicely to.
Fast and stompy nids are always great fun to. I play both.
Another great army is white scars, if you tool them up for it. Plenty of bikes to chew em up with twin linked rapid firing bolters, before chargin in with a command squad with Furious charge, FNP and bikes along with a spec char that can insta kill pretty much anything (Khor'sarro). A coupla other squads of bikes with power fists on the sergeants and you'll do pretty damn well.
Even eldar can do a great job on the charge. Get 3 banshee/scorpion/harlequin squads with exarchs and wave serpents as well as a squad or 2 of shining spears, a farseer and warlock squad on bikes (wound anything on 2+, very nice) and an autarch on a bike with a laser lance, and your gonna pants pretty much anything in assault. You'll pretty much always go first 2, love that high initiative.
Oh and grey knights. Do I really need to go over these guys? trick is they're sloooow... Unlike what I've already mentioned.
Orks are an outstanding melee army, yet you need to get used to the fact that 50% of your army will not see the "fightin'" but die riding there. Nobs on bikes are brutal if faced with something less of an earthshaker or an exorcist... even still they can survive.
Daemonzilla may be an interesting option, but I have never seen one play and win against me, but thats because I am very shooty myself (=I=).
Of Grey Knights can make their way into CC they're pretty brutal, and I thought they could take rhinos? but don't quote me on that. If anything their terminators are one of the most brutal CC units in the game.
Stealer-lists work for tyranids who's goal is CC more than gaunt lists. As mentioned Nidzilla can be scarry for a CC army (lots of cheap carnifex with piles of attacks, and a flyrant with claws) either way you can fil up your troops with stealers.
Dark Eldar are pretty rough, their raiders allow them to pull of first turn charges, and their CC specialists are suitably spikey. Also their shooting support is great.
Eldar in wave serpents w/ storm guardians, banshees, scorpions will rock out some CC. SHining spears aren't a bad call either.
Daemons of Chaos really ONLY do combat,(well, mostly) and they all deepstrike, if you want to consider that.
To scratch your space marine itch, Blood Angels, Black Templar, Ravenguard are your best bet. They all get some neat characters and can be built rather powerfully. Blood angels are notably the fastest as you can take an ENTIRE army of jump-pack marines.
Chaos Space marines are inherently a good CC army, put them in rhinos, give them a power-fist sarge and you're good to go, especially if you use berserkers or noise marines. Their Terminators are also pretty awesome (teleport 5 on top of something )
And orks well...you get one of the cheapest troop choices in the game, with 3 attacks per model, what else do I have to say?
You shouldn't overlook the Space Wolves. They are designed for assaulting, and I'm sure that will only improve with the new codex rapidly approaching. However, in terms of specialization, the 'nids and orks are forces to be reckoned with!
Applaud, my friend, the Comedy is finished.
