It may be surprising to some but I've never played a single game of WH40K. I had collected a small IG force at the start of the year, but then the new brets were released for fantasy and they got pushed to the sidelines. However with the advent of 4th ed. I've decided to finally give the army a go. So here is my first ever list and some total n00bie questions, I hope you'll bear with me:

Infantry Platoon -

Com. Sq. - 99 pts
Junior Officer, power weapon, plasma pistol
Medic, 3x plasma gun

***concerning master-crafted plasma weapons, it is possible to re-roll a to hit roll of 1 or 2? Ie. a "get hot" roll? It would make sense that a higher grade weapon would be less prone to kill the wielder.

***Medics: I take it that medics can't save a model that has been hit with an AP value that beats the model's own save. Since practically everyone has AP5 weapons this essentially means that all the medic's really good for is keeping plasma gunners from killing themselves, correct?

Infantry Sq. I - 78 pts
Grenade Launcher
Heavy Bolter Team

Infantry Sq. II - 68 pts
Grenade Launcher

*** Heavy weapon teams: In addition to being armed with their HWs, the teams are armed with lasguns. Does this mean that one of the team fires the heavy weapon and the other can shoot his lasgun? Or are they both needed to fire the heavy weapon?

Armored Fist Sq. - 70 pts
Meltagun

Chimera - 85 pts
Heavy Bolter (hull), Heavy Bolter (turret)

Total - 400 pts.

Well, this army is intended to be used against some fairly infantry heavy opponents, namely tau and grey knights. There's lots of basic bolter and pulse rifle fire coming my way, but not many vehicles, so what do you think? Will I get my ass handed to me or what?

You would be able to re-roll andy miss, even if u roll a 1 with plasma, but u HAVE to accept the second roll. And plasma only gets hot on a roll of one, if u didn't know already.

The medic can save you from anything that isn't double ur thoughness or a power weapon.

Concerning heavy weapons, the gunner is the only one needed to fire the heavy weapon, the loader can shoot his las gun freely.

Also it depends on who you are going to charge, if your going after tau, use ur chimera as cover, have the armoured fist squad inside the chimera, and a squad behind it. Moving 6" and firing all those AP 4 shots will scare tau fire warriors.

IF ur going after Greyknights, u will out number him. But he will out shoot you in this small of a battle (i hate to say that!) you will have to roll to see him until ur within 9", other wise you will not always hit him.

I would suggest dropping all those plasma guns in ur command squad. They will die before you can get to close, bc they are a threat.

Also use close order drill, its free and effective! Don't be afaired to ask questions about ur oppenents models.

Personally me i would use as many infantry models in this small of a battle, in 500 pts, i will run around w/ about 45 model-55 models, always scared my friends bc thats alot of them running around causing mayhem. havent done that small of a battle recently, so i dunno exactly.

Plasma weapons get hot on a 1 or 2 if you rapid fire with them in the new rules, and I figured I'd play some standard non-doctrine IG before I start costumising my army for real.

I've pretty much decided to change the meltagun in the AF squad for a flamer, but what would you suggest getting instead of the plasma guns?

Thanks for your insight!
