Hey guys, i used to play a few years back, kinda stopped cuz the place i played at closed down. Anyway im getting back into it now that the new Ish is out, picked up a new rulebook, read through some codexs'. But im having a tough time deciding what army i want to be. I was IG before, and i kinda got tired of never being able to charge anything, but i dont want to be all assault either, i want to be balanced -so im thinking space marines(just what the world needs right, another SM army  ). but i was thinking of doing the Blood angels chapter. I hear they are great for assaulting. I dont plan to get a huge army, prob 1000 points is where im going to stop, since its just me and 2 other friends and we're poor teenagers lol. My friend is doing the Tyranids though, and im pretty worried because i know their sick at HtH. So i guess my main question is...
- Are blood angels a good army for low-points battles(1000ish)
- Do i have a chance against Tyranids, and if so - whats my best strategy
thanks in advance for any help guys (Y)
I can't help you with your first question; I know little about blood angels. But when it comes to tyrannids, your tactics are very simple:
Shoot the hell out of them before they reach you and cut you up in close combat...
"I have died a thousand deaths, and I will die a million more..."
Yeah, BAs are a good army. I really HATE facing off aganist Chaplain Lemartes and his Death Company. My 12 yo grandson usually walks thru a great many of my units until I can manage to stop them.
"Every day above ground is a good day"
"Sometimes I feel like the winner in the Aztec Lucky Virgin contest"
Blood Angels were great, but are kind of handi-capped in the new rules. Against Tyranids.....hmmm...depends on his style of playing. Thing is though, you stated you dont just want CC, and blood angel shooting aint the best. I.e. when you have your whirlwind/devastator squad/predator nicely positioned to throw down death from afar, theres a good chance of it going for a stroll towards the enemy. I'd recommend Black Templar for CC nastyness, and reasonable shooting ability. They are feared in hand to hand, and can take whirlwinds and predators (but not devastator squads), without any losss of efficiency. Or if you wanted, you could just collect a Vanilla SM army, and make up your own background. After all, space marines do well in assault already, and you could just stiffen it up with the "rapidly-becoming-obligatory" Grey Knight Terminators. This way you get to create your own fluff, and take Heavy Bolter Devastators and such that tyranids dislike.
i'd go just vanilla Marines. the new codex is coming out in what ? 3 months? so by the time you get a 1000 points built up, you'll be able to take it in any direction you want. the new dex is gonna rock!
Hmmm. . . . BA vs. Nids, should be interesting. . . . . . .
I think a Baal Predator would be very good in this case??? ^_^
But be sure you have something that can take out his fexes, or else they will cause lots of damage methinks.
I've never thought about BA vs. Nids, you see I play Dark Eldar and I'm usually assured with the fact that I will tear the bugs apart in CC, but I don't know what you have to worry about tho. . . . . .

Just last thursday I annihilated some tyranids, good 1500pt battle, I went straight into the genestealers with my Termies and killed a hive tyrant with my honour guard on the way into close combat with a fairly large thing I forget the name of, which was killed with a lucky shot with a plasma cannon.
In short: Blood Angels against Alien scum? - Easy with plasma, (to soften them up)a predator (to give supporting fire) and 2 Terminator Squads to deep strike behind them.
I think blood angels are a good option, but there are plenty of other options out there, keep an open mind.
Holy.....you charged genestealers and suvived?! I killed 3 squads of space marines in one game with those things-the poor fella forgot to use his bolters. Anyway, your best bet is to deploy as far back as possible and shoot the nids as they charge. Also, TMCs really hate lascannons
Hive Fleet Furi Kuri 32/21/4
Tomb Kings: 8/5/2
Im in ur Halo, killin ur covernantz
ive had a battle against nids...i survived with one terminator left...but i've learn some valuable lessons
do not charge stealers with a dreadnought...unless i has a flamer and stormbolter...then you could chance it
warriors are very bad against termies in assault ususally...plus in ranged combat they are very inferior too heh
gaunts cannot hold against a well executed charge from a tactical squad with flamers...not a hope in hell...also if you just charge with a full on tac squad, with the BA special rules, you should dominate them...try not to be charged, but dont worry even if you are charged, as your tactical squad should hold easily...if you can get a dread into assault with the guants, as they cant kill it...just try not to let 20+ of them charge you
shoot the nids as much as you can before you charge...with everything you have (not at the expense of charging though)...use flamers, and other template weapons when you can, but keep some big guns and powerfists for the monstous creatures
BA are good for small battles, as their rules give them a nice edge...
hope this helps
Never judge someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes...by that time they'll be a mile away, and have no shoes
Don't bother with heavy bolters and assault cannons and stuff. Lascannons and plasma cannons are needed. Little gaunts don't threaten marines in combat (even 32 of them) but TMCs will devour you. So many games have ended with my opponent saying on turn 3 "you've only got 10 models left, want to surrender now". No, because I just sacrificed all my gaunts to get tyrants, lictors and carnifexes into combat unharmed.
