I have been playing Warhammer with my cousin for some years now. Unfortunately, he reacently said that he's losing his interest in it and I suggested we'd start 40K on a small scale to get some variation, both in painting and gaming, and he thought it to be a good idea. We've both been reading on GW's site and I've been looking around here a bit for low-points lists to learn what kind of models are used in small games for different armies. My cousin is pretty certain that he'll go for Space Marines and I'm looking for an army to match it so we can play some interesting games, meaning not one that'll have a hard time against them. We live in northern Sweden, pretty far away from everything, and I don't know anyone else playing Warhammer, so he's my only opponent.
I have narrowed it down to three armies, namely: Eldar, Imperial Guard and Tau. How these armies handle Space Marines I don't know, I just like the models and what I've read about them. However, because the Eldar have many metal units I feel a bit discouraged taking them since I have a limited budget. And since all their elite units are metal I guess I can't just ignore them if I want to make a competitive army.
I now turn to you for advice on these three armies, and which units would make up a good 500 pts list since that's the scale me and my cousin have decided to start with.
Any advice is much appreciated.
I'd recommend checking out the individual forums, get a feel for the army lists, tactics, etc. Also, check out all stickied topics, including this one - you might get more help here: http://www.librarium-online.com/foru...my-thread.html (*IMPORTANT* "Which Army?" Thread!)
not on your list but still:
Orks, cuz green is best.
and you and your friend could share cost (AoBR boxed set, gives both space marines and Orks). and With Orks you can build most of the stuff by yourself (I just build my own Trukk :p) so it wont cost you as much as motst armies.
now back to the list (sorry for the Ork propoganda there :p)
Tau have been nerfed because they have an outdated codex so it will be difficult (at first) to beat space marines.
IG will need alot of tanks and walkers to be really effective (from what I know) so will cost you alot of money.
but I'd go with what Lost Nemesis has said, check out the respective army' forum, go to the gw website and take a look at the models etc, see what you like.
When getting started, I wouldn't worry so much about 'what's strongest'. Instead, I'd focus on learning the rules, the best overall strategies, and what you like to play.
For that reason, from the list you've given, I'd choose the Eldar. Overall, I think the best armies to start with are:
I feel these armies are the best to start with because they each have a little bit of everything, and allow you to try out many different playstyles, and get the most out of the game.

Thanks all, I have been looking around a bit and read some of my old WD and decided for Imperial Guard. I have several reasons for this. One of them is that I play Warriors of Chaos in FB and I don't want to field another army consisting mostly of expensive elite units. The other reason I didn't went for Eldar is for their many metal models, apart from being more expensive I just hate assembling and painting them, so if I can avoid them I will.
I also like IG because of the many vehicles and artillery, and I've read that you can field up to three of them for a single organisation slot, which is nice even if it can ge a little costly, I just have to live with that and expand my army at a slower rate than usual.
Anyway, I'll post another, more specific thread, in the IG forum later on. Thanks again for your help.
i suggest necrons for 1 reason they are super easy just make sure everything with necron rul doesnt go down and unleash the nighbringer there also cheap cause the nightringer takes more than a quater of ur army in thoousand
Just note, IG can get expensive in a flash beccause of the cost of tanks and what not. Nonetheless, have fun =D
