Where I play, it seems like everybody and their little brother is playing Imperial Guard. Most days the only diversity you'll find is that someone put furry hats on their guardsmen (oh joy! how unique!). Walking into the store you have to look for a second to determine if everyone is playing 40k or flames of war. I really wish there was more diversity as I find everything about Imperial Guard to be an extreme bore. Even space marines and their subchapters are a rarity. Now I know IG is the flavor of the month but nontheless it would be fun to play some other type of army like tyranids or necrons or daemons. Luckily when I play with friends outside the store we have a good selection of diverse armies.
So my question is, in your local gaming areas/shops have you found that nearly everybody is playing the same army? If so what is it?
Here is a breakdown of the Armies in my gaming club: as all of us play 2-3 different ones. I am only counting the one most commonly used by that player.
Nids- 2 Players
Chaos Marines-1 Player (Me!)
Daemons- 1 Player
DEldar- 1 Player
Orks- 2 Players
Necrons- 1 Player
Eldar- 1 Player
Space Marines- 1 Player
Space Wolves- 2 Players
Blood Angels- 1 Player
Black Templar- 1 Player
Daemon/Witch Hunters- 1 Player
As you can see, more people play IG as their main army than any other one. On the whole though, my gaming club has a very nice diversity of players and armies. The only army that no one sees on a regular basis in our group is Tau.
The Wolf time is upon us!
Rep for the Rep God! Positive for the Positive Throne!
Armies: Space Wolves, Imperial Guard, Emperors Children, Necrons, Eldar
last semester 10 or so people I know and "hang out" with quite alot during downtime all realized we all like/know have played 40k
pretty neat eh? you might call our breakdown a bit of a rarity and you'll see why
Imperial guard, 2 players
Vanilla Marines, 1 player
Tyranids, 2 players (me here !,,!)
Eldar, 2 players
Chaos space marines, 1 player
Tau, 3 players
We made a trip to our not so local GW shop and when they occupants learned of our gangs assortment of players some of their eyes bugged out a bit
33% of the armies that play around here are Tau

Last time I walked into my gaming club I had my IG army, here is a breakdown of the other armies.
3 Vanilla Marine
2 Blood Angel
2 Space Wolves
1 Black Templar
1 Dark Angels
Yes I was the only one without a power armoured army.
Usually we have other people, so the marines are only about 60-70% of the players there but on that day I was the odd man out.
The Emperor Protects
IG Best Gen 1st overall of 10 DE 4th overall of 6
Eldar 3rd Overall/Best General of 26--2nd Overall/Best General of 7--1st Overall/Best General of 11
1x Blood Angels (previously vanilla marines)
2x Chaos Space Marines
1x Inquisition (mainly Witch Hunters)
1x Imperial Guard
The daemon player had fielded Tau since the start of 5th edition but recently changed. One of the CSM players occasionally pulls out Necrons.
Nobody plays DE (though there has been some interest) or the other SM variants.
My area is Space Marine dominated but we still havea good diversity of armies.
2x Space Wolves
3x Space Marines
1x Black Templars
1x Dark Angels
3x Blood Angels
2x Chaos Daemons
1x Imperial Guard (we used to have 4 but a few months later 3 have given up 40k)
1x Dark Eldar
1x Chaos Space Marines
So we do have a good diverse group (we meaning kevin and I) he was just unlucky to walk in on that day to find nothing but power armour. Also please note most people in our area have 1 army but many have 2 or 3 and I counted all armies played not their main army.

Ask me about the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White Bike!!!
I play in a few different areas, and know a lot of players, most of whom play 2-3 armies. For the most part, the numbers are about even, besides the top five and the bottom few:
Chaos Marines: 9
Imperial Guard: 5
Vanilla Marines: 5
Space Wolves: 3
Blood Angels: 3
Dark Eldar: 3
Daemonhunters/Witch Hunters: 3
Chaos Daemons: 2
Black Templar: 1
Dark Angels: 0
The only armies that don't seem to get much/any play are the older Space Marine codexes (that haven't been updated yet) and Chaos Daemons. Imperial Guard is popular, but nowhere as popular as Chaos Marines and Orks.
"Any job worth doing, is worth doing with a powerklaw."
Wow grax those are some interesting stats, especially the top two as I am both the only Ork player in my area but also the only chaos marines player.
The players at the GW store I go to have mostly MEQ armies, with most of the other armies sprinkled in to a lesser extent. It is diverse, but Marines are definitely the most common. Both of the Eldar races, Daemons, and Orks have the fewest number of players, IG, Necrons, and Tau are in the middle, and all types of Marines (including Chaos) have the most players. The only armies that are without representation are Daemonhunters and Witchhunters.
I WANNA GET STUCK IN WIT DA BOYZ
Marines. Everyone here has marines. And that pretty much means Vanilla Marines.
