Hello, so ive been registered to these forums for 5 YEARS and I have YET to make an army. I start researching then I dont have money to buy one...but enough is ENOUGH!
Basically SMs are out of the question! everyone I know pretty much plays them. My main opponents are:
Tau, CSM, and SMs!
So an army that doesnt get "raped" by these armies would be nice!
I like a shooty army and I like to accually have to use my head to win games.
Tyranids look awesome but they are a horde army and I cant drop $500 on an army.
I have pretty much talked myself down to a few armies.
Necrons, Eldar, Dark Eldar
Necrons dont have a lot of Variety and are about to get a new codex. Also my friend is willing to give me a Orb Lord, 12 Warriors, 3 Scarabs, and the Codex for FREE so thats a BIG plus!
Dark Eldar's Codex is so old and trying to get the models would be a pain. DE are suppose to get a new codex and new models as well...so i think its a little late to start them up..But i hear they are Fast and kill fast if used right.
Eldar are kind of like DE, arnt as outdated and seem fun to play. But I think the only real competive army is a mech army which would probably be very expensive.
If anyone can help me make this decision ive been contemplating for FIVE YEARS...id greatly appreciate it!
keep in mind. Tau, CSM, and SMs are my main opponents!
Can I get any help please?
Also Ive added in Chaos Daemons!
Necron is a great army to start off with. It survives very well and is very forgiving. Unfortunately, you will lose just as much as you win with this army, and it gets rather boring playing and painting as well in my opinion.
I've never been too fond of Dark Eldar. Eldar are just better in my opinion.
But that brings up another good point. Eldar are only good when you know what you are doing. It is not one of those armies where you can just spam 3 of the same unit type for FA HS Elite and HQ and 6 of the same troops and still win. You really have to build a list where everybody supports everybody else and then play very strategically to get the most out of them. This is why Eldar is one of my favorite armies; you have to know who you are playing and adjust tactics accordingly, as opposed to most other 40k armies that play the same way every game.
And chaos demos play ok, but that look like care bear vomit. Just my opinion.
Hope this helps.
I see what you mean about necrons being boring...that's why eldar caught my attention.
Although isn't eldar a rather expensive army due to the fact that the only real competitive army is mostly mech?
I can pretty much get rid of dark eldar because of how old the codex is...no one is sure when the new codex is coming out...same goes for necrons..
Chaos daemons look pretty sexy although the randomness of the army is pretty depressing...
Eldar seem to be leading...but with my friend offering 100$ of free necron stuff...its tempting...
Which army can deal with CSM and TAU the best?
Are there any armies I should consider?
I have Chaos Daemons and really love them. With them, I am also branching into Chaos Space Marines because they overlap. The problem and the good thing (all in one) about Daemons is Deep Striking. It can be a BIG advantage to Deep Strike into advantageous positions and out flank your opponent, but deep strike mishaps blow! I find in most games you can have even a serious mishap and still win. Starting each game, half your army stays in reserve. Again, this is a love hate thing. Half your army is weaker, but half your army stays safe from harm. The idea is to weaken your army with the first half of your army and then finish them off with the rest of it. Usually it works out pretty sweet. Another thing I like about the Daemons are: Huge variety in models and builds, sexy looking models, more and more plastic models to choose from and the ability to field different army types for different opponent armies.
I also have Necrons and are generally unhappy with them. Narrow unit choices, lousy (and I mean LOUSY) wargear and some over priced units. I am 1-15-1 playing with them. Now things could change radically when a new codex comes out soon. I hear there are big plans for Necrons and I hope they are all good. I really want to like them...
or just be patient, from november on the Dark Eldar will be completely redone, and they will be awesome, really, just hang on that little month, you'd like them
EDIT: and if you don't you'd at least have made sure you don't, if however you know choose something different you may regret it within less then 2 months
I'd hold off for just a little longer on buying a new army. The Dark Eldar are going to get a big revamp very soon, and the rumors suggest Necrons aren't far behind. Eldar are tricky to play right, as all their units are very specialized, but they can be very, very nasty in the hands of a skilled player. The best player in my circle of gamers plays a mechanized Eldar list.
That said, Necrons are a good value for the money. It's fairly easy to get up to 1500 points without buying any metal models. Get a battleforce, a box of warriors, a Necron Destroyer Lord, and a monolith, and you're done. That gets you a Destroyer Lord, 30 warriors, 10 scarabs, 3 Destroyers, and a Monolith. The Destroyer Lord also comes with another Destroyer body, so get a hover platform and a couple of bits off Ebay and you've got a 4th destroyer. Make sure you give your Lord a Resurrection Orb and the Warscythe. Put disruption fields on your scarabs and they become very effective at tarpitting tanks. While they have some serious shortcomings in 5th ed, that may be a temporary problem. Really, in order to make Necrons viable in casual play, all you have to do is get your opponents to agree to two simple rule tweaks. 1) Ignore Phase Out. 2) Gauss weapons count as AP1 when they roll a 6 to wound/glance. This simply returns them to the same functionality they had when the codex came out. There are still a lot more specific tweaks the Necrons need to get up to 5th ed, but for a quick and dirty rule of thumb, that seems to work well.
I don't know enough about the Dark Eldar to make a judgment about them, I'll leave that up to the more experienced players here.

Yeah I think Necrons are my #1 Choice b/c Eldar do seem complicated...for a first army...I really like CSM but my friend plays them so that really throws that out the window...also I think Dark Templar and Blood Angels are cool too but SMs are so commonly played...i mean almost everyone plays them...
Edit: To be honest...I think I love CC more than shooting...but doesnt CC suck due to all the mech?

After the Necrons are in cc forget it. With the exception of the Warscythe, Necrons have no power weapon builds except on the Lord.
yes everyone knows necrons are terrible in CC. I have no idea why you would even bring that up...14 days after the last post......
thanks for the info though...-.-
