I've been away for most of 5th Ed, but even 4th and 3rd I noticed a common theme with equipment across all armies.
All units and vehicles have a basic equipment set that in some cases does not suit them. I understand that no army in real life or fiction would not come out of the factory without standard issue, but with players wishing to customise their armies, such as myself, I find the options quite limited.
I would wish for any unit that isn't troops to come with a basic shell cost and from there, select specific weapons, upgrades ect as per your specific requirements. More points could then be allocated for other parts of the army and would make army lists easier to write and calculate.
As far as I know, the only army with this level of individual customiseation between armies is the Tyranids.
It doesn't exist for 99% of units for a damn good reason: balance.
If a unit is jsut a tempalte for whatever you want why bother with other units? You could literally condense any type of (including chaos) marine codex down into about 4 unit entries.
Space marines (from here you bolt on all the upgrades to make terminators, veterans, assault marines etc)
Rhino (and then all its variants)
Bam! That is a codex there.
Sadly last time anything came close to that is was a huge mess of options and clauses - tyranids have never been this customisable on an army scale, it was only that the MC's had lots of options to pick from (currently ork nobs are the clsoest to what you want, but that brings other issues).
Another factor is not all codices are meant to be able to do everything equally - while the very nature of space marines is each battle brother isn't that different from another (hence things like frag grenades on davastators) a lot of the xenos armies have radically different gear.
The 40k ruleset just isn't really designed for the detail you want, I mean if a squad with 10 different guns is considered flavour then you might as well go the full length (i.e no half-arsed measures) and play a game like Inquisitor were each model can be totally different and far more varied than is possible at an army scale.
I realise the balance Issue. I've re-tooled my army list to see how custom I can make it and I've realised that the units are good as they are for WHAT they are.
Scouts for example are troops, so they are cheaper, have troop weapons and don't work so well if you give them heavy weapons. Devestators on the other hand, never need to move, they can be loaded with as many heavy weapons as they can carry.
I retract most of my complaints - I recognise that squads must operate with similer weapons but it was vehicles with a similer technology base I wanted to modify. For argument's sake I wish the vehicles with the STC could be modifed and this was the origonal topic I started, the wish to modify any pattern vehicle to one that is possible somewhere in the Imperium.
Anyway, for balance reasons it's all good. Feel free to close and delete the topic.
