Chaos Space Marines
So with Tax Time around the corner its time for me to get into this hobby once and for ALL!
So being a long time forum guy and been browsing for an army for a long time. Once thing thats never really changed is that im a Close Combat, non horde, evilish type of guy. So I have narrowed down my army choices down to these armies:
Chaos Space Marines
I know Daemonhunters are not evil but I am a fan of their looks and amazing CC. Also I hear they are getting a codex in April so that is a plus.
Necrons are not a CC army but once again their looks are amazing. Plus Their Deceiver is crazy in CC.
Black Templar is one of the best CC armies, so im told. The Black with white makes me love these guys. Their Background story is good. They are rarely played. They got an update but i dont know how that affected them
Chaos Space Marines, They are Evil, they look amazing with their horns and berserkers with their axes. They make me jiz in my pants. They are kind of a popular army...They are flexible. im told they are good in CC.
Any additional information on any of these armies and a suggested choice of direction would greatly help me.
Some questions I would like to be answered for each army are:
Are they competitve?
Are they fun?
Are they getting a new codex soon?
Thoughts on each army?
Thanks in Advance!
Are they competitve? Chaos kind of is. The rest are sub-par. Necrons being nearly unplayable.
Are they fun? Chaos is.
Are they getting a new codex soon? Chaos is not.
Thoughts on each army? Chaos is the best choice - right now. Daemonhunters might be good after their new codex - anything that has gotten a codex since 5th ed has been good.
So either Chaos of Daemonhunters.
As I sit here and think...I really dont want daemonhunters...as fun as they seem like they would be...I dont want to pick an army that everyone is going to jump to due to the new codex...I want to be different and although CSM isnt "Different"...I cant denie whatever it is that draws me to them. On the other hand Black Templar...there is something about them that Im attracted to...The black with white trim...plus their amazing CC. I can play SMs without actually playing them...kinda...lol
ive almost got this figured out...I just cant make this final decsion...
What army is easier/cheaper to start?
Its pretty obvious that if i played BT it would be rare to see another one where as im sure there are plenty of CSM players out there.
Dark Eldar can easily be made non horde close combat army, the evilpart is kinda obvious ( chaos space marines revere chaos gods, we created one )
No before you start to disagree, which is your full right, and i'll give my experience with your armies after I'm done hear me out.
The Dark Eldar got massive close combat abbilities, take for example Wyches, their 6+ save, T3, fragile isn't it, and only pistols, that seems like a fragile speedster to me, but once you're in close combat you get a 4++ save, because you're that lithe you just dodge blows, take Incubi, these guys at more then a Death company warrior/ pop, with no shooting whatsoever (the flamer upgrade is not that good, and requires you to take an exarch euh klaivex), but they do all have powerweapons at I5 S4, enough to trash whatever marine squad as long as they do not have to much power weapons themselves, but those are tarpitted by 4++wyches.
I agree, they are rather specialised each, so what about a compromise between the 2 harlequins, evil close combat clowns of death, which can jump straight from a portal into combat.
For your FA you got the wound allocation magicans which are beastmasters, with all sorts of things, rending, highstrenght, lots of attacks, 4++ saves, what would you want more, even the HS can be geared towards close combat Taloi for some?
Not to forgetfor eachtdestroyed squad, you either get feel no pain, or furious charge.
Maybe you don't like the dark Eldar, or you think they're to popular, if the latter, wait for the GK codex, Dark Eldar will easily lose bandwagon jumpers because, they're fragile, you are a rapier versus a sledgehamber, your damage is massive, but you can't block, be wise or be dead, so they're not as forgiving as some other armies
from the things you've mentioned
As is Grey Knights are a SHOOTY army, which finish the remains in close combat, a lot like the deathwing
Necrons are shooty as well, and their major CCunit the Pariah are not worth it, while Flayed Ones and Wraiths do not have power weapons, their Tomb Spiders do ignore armour saves, but have WS2
Chaos, good and ccarmy, but they tend to lack variety, only a couple of good choices
BT were left hanging but have gotten a massive boon by means of the new FAQ, they may be the best of the 4 for what you're looking at
You know I did forget about about dark eldar but as amazing as they might be, I just think that they would be to difficult for a beginner like me to try and play. Honestly I think I would get aggravated and quit after constant losses and rapefests lol. Plus I really don't lime their looks for some reason. Most of their main units just don't look that appealing to me. As for daemonhunters, I didn't know they were maiy a shooty army...plus they are good guys anyways so that checks them off my list. Necron are very nice but I think Ill make them my second army since by the. I'm sure their new codex will be out.
I'm leaning towards black Templar because they are under dogs and rarely played although with the new update I'm sure they will grow in popularity a bit. I'm for some reason trying to convince myself to play CSM yet trying to make an excuse to go to Black Templar. For whatever reason I can't seem to make up my mind...
Hi, we have a small group of players in my area and two of our newest members have got Black templar and CSM armies. To be honest...I wasnt that impressed by either actually since I managed to beat them at their own game in CC and Im an Eldar player...we dont do CC as an army. We tend to shoot you to bits THEN wipe you out in CC, lol. But then again they are still new to the game and are still learning so I will go on what I have experienced in the fights.
The Emperors Champion, wow...I wish I could give my entire army Preffered Enemy or +1 Strength...nuff said.
Lol thats about it. nothing else truely stood out from what I've fought so far but the effect this guy had on the entire army.
Just plain old tough as nails Space Marines.
The Marks of the deamons really give their CC units a nice variety. Extra attacks...invunerable saves...etc...
Also have MCs bursting out from anywhere since they possess his Marines. Thats really awesome. Also the Defiler. What a pain in the a**...ignores shaken and stunned results and has a fair bit of Fire power, I know this isnt CC really but you have to have some shooty stuff.
So there you go, my (Short) view on what has impressed me from each army after having only fought them once. It might help you swing your vote either way.
Very true...after reading through the black Templar codex...the army wide preferred enemy is really the only thing that makes BT crazy good. Although they do have that rule that makes the unit move D6 towards the enemy unit that wounded said unit which seems amazing also.
I really know nothing about CSM other than the fact that some Of their units make me cream my pants lol.
For choosing a first army, It's very important that you look into the different armies and have a look at what units they have and what you prefer personally.
If you want to remain at least semi competitive, you can forget about Necrons. GW had them crawling from their tombs only to send them back it seems.
Deamon Hunters are a nice army on the field and once they get their new codex they'll probably be a rather popular army. As was said, they will soften their opponents up with ranged fire first and then finish off what's left in CC. I've never played them though, so I can't give you any further info about them.
CSM is fun and has perhaps the most potential for competitive play from your selection. Their deamon princes, berserkers, oblits and the likes make that you have some effective units. Perhaps they are a little more forgiving on the field than the other selections.
Ah, Black Templars. My vote went to these guys since I play them myself. Past months, my Emperor's Champion stayed at home and I played vanilla marines mostly. Now with the new FAQ, BT comes more in line with 5th ed and they are sure to see a little more action. They aren't really an easy army to start with though since their learning curve is higher than that of normal marines. They have their own playstyle, but once you've got the hang of it, they can be brutally effective. Don't go expecting that these guys become a sort of steamroller army like BA though.
Are they fun? - (both) Yes
Are they getting a new codex soon? - (both) Unlikely
Thoughts on each army?
Chaos - Good HQ (daemon prince), wide variety of effective troops choices, and some decent heavy firepower. Good choices balanced out by some expensive upgrades and unfavourable comparisons with vanilla marines.
Templars - They are solid in close combat, but they don't have the OTT hammer units of newer books. The update gives them more cheap firepower. You'll need to spend some time going over the special rules, 5th ed rule changes, and faqs before you can put them on the table.
Visually a nice match for allied GKT, too bad that option is going out the window in a couple of months.
Thanks for all the amazing information!!! I am getting drawn to CSM it seems like. Templar might be fun but I just don't see it happening. They seem just too gimped to be honest. I really want to love them because they look so amazing. I just keep seeing cons and little to no pros. Grey knights might be pretty sexy. But without the new codex only time will tell.
What army would you absolutely HATE to get into CC with?
