I've played 40k games once every few months or so and am looking to get back into the game properly having played on and off for around 10 years. My exams finish in June and I'm wanting to start off with a new army for then. At the moment I am still in the planning phase of what army to use. At the end of the summer break I'm planning to enter a doubles tournament with my best friend so I am going to save the money I get between now and then to buy a new army. I currently play CSM and have about 1.500 points. However, I am looking for a new army to play with that will give me something different to play with (in terms of style). Over the years, and many editions, I've had experience playing with Tau, CSM, SM vanilla. I've also had the experience of playing against necrons, dark eldar, eldar, csm, sm vanilla and blood angels
The question I want to know is what army should look at playing. I've read the forums and still don't have a clear idea. The only thing I would say is that I'd like a bit of a challenge. This can come in any form (except CSM). I would also like to hear some concepts that wouldn't seem an obvious choice, for example a specific army with a bespoke tactic
I hope this isn't too confusing and feel free to respond
What army is always a tough choice. I have chosen mine based on what Mini's I liked and would want to paint.
A new Grey Knights codex comes out next month (and they get the Storm Raven).
But any Marine chapter (even Blood Angels) might be too similar to your CSM.
Necron's are supposed to also get a new codex later this year.
The new Dark Eldar are lightning fast and with all of the new models coming out (most are supposed to be out by end of June) they might be a great choice.
Both Eldar and Dark Eldar are very powerful armies, but challenging to play correctly. That is part of the fun for me (currently I play Eldar).
At the beginning of turn 1, I spray my opponent's army with the bacon flavored spray. Then I unleash my Boston Terrier Squiggoth who then devours their entire bacon flavored army! There is no defense against her cuteness! All are doomed!
Woot for the Hive mind.
Tyranids. They are amazingly epic. Some amazing new units and the models are very fun to paint and assemble. The sheer amount of variety you can have is mind bobbling. If you want to take a look at this post it might provide you with some ideas if you are considering the bugs. Or check the link in my signature.
There is no set tactic for the Nids making it so fun!
Field over 200 gaunts or field several monstrous creatures of pumping out str 10 shots. They are just so fun. Shooty, close combat or all reserve army? Swarm, Nidzilla. The options are endless!

But it all comes down to you. People can give you ideas and suggestions but it is all your choice. So choose wisely!
