There is a theory that each couple of editions in Games Workshop games, the units that are good flips on its head. For instance in Fantasy its gone HeroHammer, EliteHammer (cavalry and MSU) and now Blockhammer (arguably). In the next few editions it will (if the theory is correct) go back to Hero or EliteHammer.
40k has had fewer editions, but it still seems quite evident through the 'InfantryHammer' 3rd and 4th edition and the 'TankHammer' or 'MechHammer' 5th edition.
I suppose that in 6th or 7th edition 40k the pendulum will swing again, but the question is how? And to where?
My personal theory is it will swing away from MechHammer back to InfantryHammer with subtle changes to the way vehicle damage works. Either:
1 - Stunned and Shaken be cumulative. So if you get Stunned 3 times, you can't move for the next 3 turns.
2 - If a vehicle is already if a vehicle shaken twice it is instead stunned. If a vehicle is already stunned and you shake or stun it again it is weapon destroyed.
*However both of these increase complexity, so maybe not.* Alternatively:
3 - No cover for vehicles.
4 - Vehicle Damage results aren't rolled till the end of the shooting phase (kind of like a morale test). If only 1 damage result is forced it would act as normal. If you were penetrated 2 times, roll 2 times and add +1 to each (maybe the rule could be called 'weight of fire'), then pick 1 result to keep. Penetrated 3 times? Three rolls, +2, pick 1 (ie - 97% chance it is dead).
The sad part is, is that 40k, barring a few races, is quite balanced. To make 40k a tolerable game, nerf sw, redo tau, necrons, nids and eldar.
But you're right, chances are all those vehicles people have bought will now become flying coffins or just a waste of points (though at 35-55 a piece spacemarines can't complain, try 90)
As far as predicting what 6 could hold? More forgeworld models with a view to making the standard game feel more like apocalypse. Points costs for units goes down. Vehicles remain unchanged. Prices rise, stores close.
Yeah, that theory has some credibility to it. We can all see the changes. I kind of like them, you can't play a single style all the time between editions, you're challenged to improve.
Or maybe just bring back that old damage table, where even a glancing hit could wreck your vehicle. Or something similar.
I wonder what they'll do to infantry to try and bring them back to the front. Outnumbering the enemy? Vehicles easier to wreck in combat with infantry?
If someone helps you, rep them.
In a votewar you don't vote on a single match, you vote on the entire round. Got that?
Two damage tables.
Glancing damage table; 1-2 nothing, 3 shake, 4 stun, 5 weapon destroyed, 6 immobilised.
Penetrating damage table; 1 stunned, 2 weapon destroyed, 3 immobilised, 4 destroyed, 5-6 explodes.
Boom. Now vehicles are less powerful without any huge adjustments to the game.
