So hi, i am at the moment collecting Tyranids and Blood Angels and haven't played a real big game yet.
Reason for this is the time my studies take and that i am angry i guess, at my self for not knowing how to paint my tyranids in a good way. The blood angels are going on fine, but as i easily get bored doing the same thing over and over, it is starting to get tiresome to paint that damned red. And for the nidz, the big problem is that i cant make something nice of their carapace.
So since these two armies are cc oriented i am looking for a third army to paint a squad in the middle of all blood angel minis. So i can just paint something else then red. So i am looking for an army thats the opposit of a cc oriented army, be it speed or sheer ranged firepower i got a few armies i just cant see my self playing.
Imperial guard are just so frigging boring, i mean .. humans? woopie!
And skin.. i don't like skin, heads with no full mask isn't made for space combat.
Eldar, i tried a small list before but sold those, so don't want to start again.
""edit"" Yes, other space marine chapters are out of the question as well, that would just be boring.
So that leaves us with...
- Shooty Orks
- Dark Eldar
- Tzeencht Chaos Marines
Have i missed any ideas?
What would you pick for a third small force if you wanted it to be different?
I am quite lost and been back and forth between many different weird ideas, i probably wont play this lot to win tournaments, but more for painting stuff in a different color then red and to play fun games.
Any thoughts appreciated.
Tau aren't really competitive at the moment, but are very shooty - and iirc have no exposed skin. The others you mention all do shooty, but also do CC (in some cases better than they shoot) so if you don't like guard or necron, I'd go tau.
I also hate skin (can't paint faces for toffee) so I'll probably be using something like tau heads on my IG models when I start my next army (although a DE wych cult is also tempting)
Necrons and Tau are probably your best bet -- No skin and almost useless in CC either will be quite a change from your other 2 armies.
Chaos Marines give many opportunities for shooting armies, incl. Thousand Sons, Noise Marines, Plaguemarines, and even vanilla CSM. Most people (myself included) consider CSM as a CC army though. Same goes for DE.
Orks are fun & frustrating in equal measure, but there's a LOT of skin there to paint, and many models means much repetition...
There are three types of people in this world -- those who can count, and those who cannot.
Alright. I might need to add tho that, having one or even a few cc units isn't too bad. I mean with Tau i probably will need kroots anyways for a few reasons.
They should then be used for counter-charge or to protect flanks and similar stuff. I just dont want an army that focuses on getting everything in the opponents face.
But yes, i need to take another look at Tau i suppose. Necron's by all means look nice, but sadly they got like 5 units in total, and that sounds even more boring then just doing red hehe.
Stupid imperial guards who cant make real helmets/armor!
I have my own red Space Marine army (Sons of Orar), but I invested in a good red undercoat primer. It cuts the amount of time it takes to do the boring stuff (getting an even, red basecoat) and lets me spend more time doing the good stuff (detailing). My primer of choice is Army Painter "Pure Red", but Tamiya also do an excellent range of sprays.
You could also just buy some helmets for Imperial Guard. There are a ton to choose from. Pig Iron's range is popular for a reason: Head Sprues : Pig Iron Productions, 28mm Gaming Minatures
Well as i first set out to find the opposite, i ended up with Tau. Just took a order of the battle force
The more i thought about a shooty ork army i still randomly venture into thoughts about "ooo lets do 30 slugga boys there and some nobz over there"
so they went out the window. And dark eldar, while all new and shiny, but with so many models left to be released.. and me with limited knowledge in greenstuff/converting
just felt like it woulnt be as much fun as they could. Might end up in the future looking at dark eldar again, but who knows.
And about the red spray, thats a great idea.. i just had some really bad sprays from the army painter. Cant nail down if its me who sprays it wrong, or the spray it self thats bad.
I still got a white can around, could try it again when it gets milder up here in Sweded and see if the result is as bad as on my termagants i tried it on in the past.
Thank you all for your input btw.
Tyranids have AMAZING shooty capabilities, probably more lethal than their close combat if you know how to use them.
But if not go for tau
