New to 40k, first army advice appreciated

    Hi all
Im normally a WFB player but have finally decided to get myself a 40k army.
I would really appreciate some advice on a first army.
I'm not overly concerned with being highly competative as I play for fun, but, would like an army that isn't going to get its face wiped every battle.
I'll be facing various different armies and would like to be able to build an all round list, not have to build a new list for each enemy.
I'm going to start at around 1000 points and plan on buying a box of models at a time, painting those, then getting the next (got to many unpainted fantasy models staring at me and demanding attention from mass-buying armies in the past!).
I'd also like an army that doesnt need to field 1001 models, a low model count is a definite plus (got mainly horde based WFB armies and it gets a bit much when it takes longer to set-up/pack away my army than it does to play a game )
I was originally drawn to Tyranids, but, i'm getting the impression that I would require a load of models to play these well, so thats a big drawback.

    so , to recap
I'd like advice on a beginners army
    1000 points to start with
    fun, but not a walkover
    low model count if possible

any help given wil be very much appreciated

Well, the funneist army (in my opinion) is da orkz you can play competitive if u wish but u dont have to ^^ They do have a need for big mobz usually but you could build an mech army or an army with 50 nobz if u want to

I'd also go with Orks. They are so versatile; you can play horde, mech, Nobtastic, (??) and even go machine- crazy and have an army of walkers.

    Plus they're great fun!

thanks for the replies so far

Orks - These where the first army I considered as my main WFB army is Orcs and Goblins, but, if I'm honest, don't think I can face any more green painting!

I mainly play O+G and Lizardmen in WFB. With the Lizardmen I enjoy playing a Slann based army, dominating the magic phase.
O+G are my favourite as I can run many different types of army, but, i am looking for something a little different in 40k

Look to a space marine army or eldar. Possibly imperial guard for a mechanised army.

Having played them with the new codex I would say not as your first venture into 40k
