Played two games with my Space Wolf buddy today and won one and drew one using the Grey Knights.
Despite the draw, all right fair enough it was a lucky draw with me failing a 2+ armour save at the last moment of turn 7, he claims there is no way anyone can beat a balanced army list of Grey Knights if they are used right.
"IF THEIR USED RIGHT!?" I argued, "You could say that about any army."
But he was having none of it. After 2 defeats, absolute defeats where I had crippled his army by turn 3, and the close call draw for him in the last game he just doesn't like playing against the Grey Knights because, "They are so specialised and Elite-ist,you beat them at anything."
I did argue the exact same thing about his army compared to the Eldar, he can match me in shooting thanks to his long fangs and also beat most of my army in CC with his regular troops never mind his elites. I can't beat him at any one aspect when playing Eldar but I still manage to beat him half the time but they are ALWAYS close games.
So heres the point of this poll/thread, is my friend just blowing smoke because now my army is able to take him on head to head and I'm not fighting an uphill battle anymore or is it because the Grey Knights are just that damn good as he says? I have played different themed lists so its not like I'm using the same list over and over. I have used an all Paladin/terminator list, a Henchmen themed list and a mix of the two so far. The game that I drew on was the henchmen list, decided to do a full inquisitorial army for kicks.
Let me know what your opinions are.
Grey nights are an elite army so they WILL be good in many areas, with their basic troops performing at the same level as most other armies elites. That said they really only excell in shooting and even then it's focused on anti infantry shooting rather than vehicles/heavy armour. They pay for it though in points cost as each one is a significant cost even when left bare and at their basic gear/units.
Ask your friend how he replied to all the comments of grey hunter and long fangs being overpowered and to good when space wolves were released. it happens with every new army that comes out - X unit/model is to powerful - it can't be beaten - it keeps killing my army - i've beaten grey knights armies with space wolves and normal marines and done the opposite - If your friend is having so much trouble beating them then he might want to look at his army list and balance it out or modify it.
Any army used correctly CAN and normally will beat another army thats specialised in one field, balanced army lists are designed to handle anything

To be fair I can see where your friend is coming from. He doesn't want to assault you because all of your grey knights have force weapons and he has 1 power weapon per squad... and he doesn't particularly like his troops all being shot at by stormbolters while his only have regular bolters. Yes you'd have less troops, but more firepower and more power weapons as well.
Also, you have the capability to put dreadknightsin stormravens... but we'll save that for another time :-P

Take a deep breath and say it with me: they're still just Marines. They have a lot of fancy tricks and shiny toys, but at the end of the day, they're still T4 bodies in a 3+ shell, and they have even less invulnerable saves than codex Marines, and less FnP than Blood Angels. They're not unbeatable.
Look, with the amount of bodies they put on the field my Tyranids outshoot them...
10 Purifiers are awesome, they can take out anything short of a C'tan...however, they can also be taken out by regular troops, if I'm firing my 60 Devourer shots at them from my Termagants I take out 5...if I then assault he wipes out about 10 from cleansing flame and kills 3 more in combat (I'm saying 1 has a halberd, 2 falchions and 2 swords), my gants then take out a further 1 and this is without any biomorphs or the benefit of a tervigon. If I was desperate to fell that extra guy I'd assault but since I have 20 Devourer Gants I can sit back and blast those purifiers back to the lap of the Emperor, if he wants to come and get some he's welcome to it, he has a 5 man squad advancing towards vastly superior numbers who can probably take the squad out next turn if they don't get to assault.
Even my Chaos have a decent chance against them:
My Plasma-Chosen for instance. Rapid firing they get 12 shots (4 guns plus 2 combi-plas from the sgt. and rhino), 8 hit, 6 wound, 6 Knights fall unless he has a stave. If he passes morale or even has a squad left then he can assault the survivors whose guns didn't blow up, whatever the case I've pulled him out of position and now have a rhino behind his lines which I can contest with.
Other armies can do this too (especially Tau...it doesn't help that those crystal swords reflect and magnify markerlight beams). The fact that Tau and Necrons are surprisingly good against the Knights is an indicator of their army's weakness...something nastier than them. I can see the initial surge in Grey Knight popularity falling as those two armies get re-released. Force weapons are fine...until you run into a lord and warriors with a ressurection orb and warding staves can only stop so many plasma rifle shots.

I think thats the trend the new codexs are going with really, can't wait to see the next one they release. Anyone have any idea what the next codex is that their working on?

And GKs aren't that powerful as long as you have a reasonable anti TEQ . I find that Helios Battlesuits do the trick quite nicely. An IG leafblower list works too.
