My friend has challenged me to colossal game of Apocalypse, specifically an unthinkable 40,000 point game, one on one.
We both know that this is no small feat of a game, there will be tears, there will be blood and sacrifice and massive amounts of money spent on making this game possible. This will probably take the best part of a week to play when you incorparate time to sleep, eat and take breaks to relieve the stress. We is going to build a 20 foot by 8 foot table to play this on so that means that even missle launchers and lascannons are going to have a hard time hitting stuff since they will only be in range of at best 40-45% of the board from any given position.
Niether of us has this much stuff, we can both probably push our limits somewhere in the region of 18-25K (rough estimate) so there is still a lot of work to do to build up to that level but we are both going to try our hardest to build to that level.
The game won't be happening for another 8-12 months (Possibly longer) to give ourselves time to get there so I'm hoping to ask you guys for some help, not just ideas and list building but the best places to buy cheap models to help build up my force to the required level. If you know someone looking to sell their army/units off, point them my way.
My main army is Eldar and they have some fantastic Formations which I am going to get several of. Sunstorm formation, 6 prisms = 10" D-strength template, massive devestation. Shadow walker formation, each walker appears anywhere on the board at least 12" away from any enemy unit and gets to fire their weapons twice the turn they arrive. A 10 strong formation of warwalkers could potentially fire 160 scatter laser shots, 40 Bright lance/EML shots, or 80 starcannon shots. That formation is going to kill whatever its aimed at the turn it arrives. I was thinking about having rougly 30 Warwalkers in various sizes of Formations armed with different weapons.
I am not against using other armies in this game so if you guys can come up with some other fantastic formations for me to use, Eldar or not, then please feel free to say. We are still working on the fluff for this epic battle so we will incorperate it some how. Any help you guys can give will be much appreciated. Thank you.
Well, if you plan on taking a massive Eldar force, it'd be a sin not to use the Phoenix Court of Khaine! What better unit to lead your grand army into battle?! If you do this, add 2 farseers with fortune to a unit with your PLs so you can fortune both them and the Avatar, without sacrificing fleet like you would if you attached Eldrad (Who doubtless will be elsewhere on the battlefield, am I right?). I can also highly recommend the Aspect Assault Wave. This will cost almost 2000 pts by itself (the formation alone with no farseers is 1540 I believe) so you can take out a chunk of what you need with only 7 models.
In one Apoc game where each player brought 2000 pts, I brought the Aspect Assault Wave, lead by Prince Yriel with a unit of Banshees, Scorps, Dragons, and 2 DA units all in Serpents (though the formation says they must be 10 strong and lead by an exarch). This formation was a great deal of fun, since I also took star engines on all the Serpents and as long as they stay within range of the Autarch's tank, their Energy shields reduce incoming shots to Strength 7!
You could also probably whip up a story to bring along your Grey Knights. It seems to reason that if there were a great enough chaos threat, that the two races would team up, though in this case you should also include some harlies. Which would also open up the door to take some Dark Eldar. Just think, the Harlies show up on the craftworld with an entourage of DE and both sides are like WTF!?

The enemy's gate is down
It's going to hurt the bank, but you can't play a game of that size and not include a Revenant Titan or two. If you don't want to go to FW, then try building one yourself! I've even seen one modeled from a Voltron kit! Be sure to include those skimmers with the D weapon, I forget what they're called.
I also already have 50 Harles and 50 Fire dragons which I purchased for other apocalypse games.
If you have 8-12months keep a pulse on Ebay. Best bet at getting some things under 70% retail prices.
If you have the models a Baneblade Steel Fury Company is an easy in. 3 models for 1950 points (with the extra sponsons on each tank). I'm sure the Inquisition has some stockpiled away somewhere...
That said, a 20'x8' board does sound like a size that's finally big enough to be suitable for a Emperor's Wrath Artillery Company. 9 Basilisks, One Chimera. Throw camo-netting (and possibly Enclosed Compartments) on them and it's 1520-1655 points for the formation. A full Space Marine Vengance Task Force (Lysander, Termie Chaplain, Termie Librarian, 6x 10-man Terminator/Terminator Assault Squads) will be priceless if your opponent runs Chaos Marines/Chaos Daemons, since the entire formation gets Preferred Enemy against them and turns an enemy IC into an objective if slain. 63 models, but comes in at 2940 or more (Epistolary w/ Termie + SS, Chaplain w/ Termi + Combi-plasma + Digital Weapons + Melta Bombs)
Also, three words: Deathstrike Vortex Missile
