Hey, I'm new to tabletop and am looking for an army to play. I play both Dawn of War and Dawn of War 2, so I have a feel for what the armies are about, I have also played with my mate's armies of SoB, Tau and Eldar, and I enjoyed all three. But I do not know what to start collecting. I have plenty of time to paint and build the miniatures and money is a issue but I will slowly build up an army. But I would like to end up with a solid army of 2000 points. I know I do not want to play as;
Tau because I just dont like the race. Space Marines are over-played. Dark Eldar are just not my thing, and orks and tyranids just dont interest me. Now I am stuck between Eldar for the fast strikes and heavy damage, but I dont like the idea of rubbish armour. Imperial Guard i have read the codex and I don't understand how an army is constructed or anything. I doubt id like necrons because they dont have many units to choose from. Not too sure about any Chaos, and then theres the SoB which i found are failures of Space Marines...so any help would be appreciated. I am looking for an army that can hit pretty hard, but can use snipers, and I know Space marines can do that but I don't want them. If anyone could give me each race and how you could play as them that would be fantastic. Thankyou in Advance. Also any help on building up an army would be even more appreciated.
I'm a bit stumped here cause thats all the armies . If you like snipers, the best army to go for is Eldar. Now like you said their armour isn't the strongest but all their vehicles are fast so if you go over 12" they all get a 3+ cover save, also some of the tanks have a nifty little yet expensive upgrade called holo fields which makes your opponent have to roll 2 dice on the damage table and have to take the lowest. Theres 1 vehicle that can't buy that upgrade which is the wave serpent but that has an energy shield that lowers all ranged attacks higher than str 8 to str 8 so that makes up for not having holo fields. The idea with Eldar is to swarm your opponent with so many fast vehicles that they lose focus and stop thinking instead of being calm and thinking about the situation. I don't have Eldar but I've played them enough to know a few things. You'd have to wait for someone who actually plays them to advise you with a good list but what i'd recommend is fire dragons, dire avengers, striking scorpions, a couple of farseers then as many falcons and wave serpents as you can fit it. Hope this helps!
One shall stand, and one shall fall.
Well actually it helps a lot, thankyou very much! And yeah I know it's them all but I'm picky ^^. I do have an Eldar Codex so that will help. So what units should I buy first? I haven't got a lot of money at the moment, but I don't want to buy a rubbish unit that I will not use and it gathers dust on the shelf. Basically I need the minimum to play a game first so I can get used to the game. Thankyou in Advance.
Eldar are a dangerous army in the right hands. I play dark eldar myself so I know what real crap armor is. Eldar have quite a bit of AV12 which is decent enough. Combine that with holo fields and you have a tough nut to crack.
IG are a more forgiving but less elite army. You can have loads of transports with fire points that allow you to drive up and maul your opponents. You also have weight of numbers. IG have the ability to overwhelm armies that would otherwise cause problems. They only have (mostly) BS3 so while their weapons are pretty good they still end up missing half the time.
Read through the army lists that eldar and IG have in their sections of the forums. Read both codices.
If you go with eldar, a farseer or even Eldrad are good. And every eldar player I know has at least one unit of warp spiders.
For guard, chimeras and veterans with melta-guns are a favorite combination.
is a jetbike seer council worth getting?
Sounds like you're leaning more towards Eldar. I don't know that much about them, but most lists in tournaments I've seen spam Wave Serpents and War Walkers. As far as troops go, Fire Dragons are wonderful, Howling Banshees and Warp Spiders are great assault troops, and Farseers are just plain awesome. Check out their forum for more advice.
If you're looking for Guard advice, I have a lot more expertise there. Guard troops are squishy, but they have some of the most cost effective and durable vehicles in the game. Chimeras are the most cost-effective transport you can buy, Leman Russes are tough and versatile tanks, and Vendetta Gunships provide excellent long range fire power. Hellhounds massacre infantry, Manticores can lay down more blast templates than just about anything, and Hydras pop transports like nothing else. There's plenty of stuff for the hard-core tread heads like me. I'll answer any more specific questions here, but you should check out the Guard forums, there's plenty of good info there.
If you are going eldar and want to be cost effective then start off with two battleforces and a fire dragon squad. This will give the core for most competitive eldar lists: 1 squad of dire avengers in a wave serpent, 1 fire dragon squad in wave serpent, guardians on foot with weapons platforms, and the two walkers providing heavy fire support. Really those three boxes and an HQ of your choice will give you a little under 1000 points with wargear.
Tau my love! You are back!
Eldar are an awesome army but I'd describe them as a glass sword, they lan devestating blows but are very fragile. They require a little finesse to use but are great fun. Their lack of decent armour is mae up by their tanks, or more specifically the wave serpents. All shooting attacks are reduce to strength 8, you can move up to 24" in a turn, 36" if you take star engines which is a lot to move in a single turn by anyones books when the standard table is only 6 feet wide (72").
If you start collecting Eldar I'd recommend a farseer as your HQ, Getting your self a squad of Dire avengers and a squad of Storm Guardians, for varietys sake as well as some CC ability, and two wave serpents for the bare essentials.
Okay Eldar it is, are Rangers worth getting?
