One of my friends has got a huge thing for the Planet Strike campaigns and a question got brought up that I figured I'd share with all of you. We are trying to get about 4 armies per side for a huge game using one FOC from the planetstrike rules. Attackers get 6 FA and 6 Elites, while Defenders get 6 HS and I think extra troops.
So here's the discussion. What would you pick for your army, using any unit from any army, to create the best defensive and best offensive armies?
Sorry I can't help more because we just got the Planetstrike book as a prize in our last Apocalypse game. But are you talking about the scenario where one army is defending the middle of the board and one is attacking from around the edges? I would think a that in that scenario the attacking team should be like an Imperial Guard type of army with high offense and many pie plate weapons. The defending army should be tough and can take a hit like a Daemon army or an MEQ. But I really haven't had a chance to play Planetstrike yet, only read the rules a bit. Doesn't the armies you field depend on what armies you and your friends possess?
I would look at what armies have the best units for the slots that you get more of for that roll. IG might fill the 6 Fast Attack slots well with Vendettas, Eldar might fill the Elite slot well with Fire Dragons and Howling Banshees. Heavy Support might be well fitted again for IG with the Manticore and Leman Russ tanks, but Dark Eldar Ravengers, Blood Angels Storm Revens and Ork Battle Wagons w/Deff Rollas may do really well in this roll as well. For Troops you will want something that can specialize and not run away, Chaos Marines would fill this well with Plague Marines being T(5), FNP, Fearless, and being able to take 2 special weapons in a minimum sized unit, for a counter assault Berzerkers would fit right in.
We're just planning on getting a simple Planet Strike game with the standard board. Defenders get to set up the terrain. So they start off in fortifications. Only real limit to the armies for us will be 3 man teams and one FOC so it requires us to cooperate on list building.
More than likely we will end up facing IG, IG, and Salamanders. on defense. Offense will be GK, SW, and Tau.
As the Tau player it's a win for me, not having to bring troops and only fielding Crisis suits and Broadsides, Broadsides EVERYWHERE!
Defenders will undoubtedly be fielding Hydras, Russ Spam, and a few Vendettas.
Well, let's take a look at what you really want, and figure out the best units to have.
With defense you want:
1. Overwhelming firepower
2. Ability to hold your own in the assault
3. The ability to fire out of fortifications
Due to #2 and 3, you don't want your heavy support choices to be vehicles, because they'll get eaten up in the assault, and can't hide inside a building. Monstrous creatures and walkers are better at the assault, but can't go inside buildings.
All things considered, the best choice is a heavy weapons squad that has a lot of firepower and can hold their own in close combat. My unit of choice would be the Space Wolf Long Fangs, with a Wolf Guard attached, equipped for close combat. If not Space Wolves, then probably Grey Knights.
For attackers, you want:
1. The ability to get to the enemy quickly
2. Raid/smash buildings
I may be prejudiced, but this sounds like a job for Ork bikes, both the nob biker and regular warbike variety. Have them turbo boost on, and then get right in the enemy's face with tons of dakkaguns, combi-skorchas, and powerklaws.
Daemons may seem like a good choice at first, but the elites/fast attack can't really crack open buildings that well.
For a backup choice, I'd say the Dark Eldar are a fine invasion fleet. Same strategy as the Ork bikers, only with less resilience, made up for by lots of lances to bring down fortifications and tanks.
Just my two teef. Good luck!

My choices would be:
Space wolves (with lots of long fangs)
Grey knights (with paladins for repulsing assaults)
Tau (can they put broadsides in bastions?)
Daemons (assaulty units for deepstrike charges)
Necrons (scarabs eating bastions - what more can I say)
Orks (grab as many scoring units as possible and burnas for clearing buildings)

blood angel assault marines with sanguinary priest and jump pack equiped death company are perfect for the attackers. with the decent of angels rule and the ablility to assault after deep striking you can put them right next to your opponents for juicy assaults. for added precision theres a perk/upgrade/stratagium that is some kind of spotter token that lets you re-roll deep strike rolls in LOS if my memory serves me correctly.
