I'm getting into 40k and I just love both of their minatures. The Boyz and Warriors look great... although Warriors don't seem to have as much character. I'm after fun - I'm not a competitive person as such.

I'll be playing with my friends - most of whom have Space Marines. One guy has Tau, another has Ork Speed Freeks.

I know the differences between Orks and Necrons and if I could afford it I'd love to get both, but one force is about all I can afford at the moment. I already have a Necrons list worked out and it is made up of two battleforces plus a couple of other boxes.

I like the nature of the Orks... I like the Necrons because they don't seem so popular... so any advice?

    EDIT:

Any other recommendations would be good as well. I'm not that keen on Space Marines and if I were to do Chaos I wouldn't pick one of the popular Gods. The Thousand Sons seem kinda cool.

I really do like the ideals of Chaos, but I don't like a lot of the monster-type models. The Marines, Raptors and so on look great, but not the various demons and stuff... although Death Guard Plague Marines look good.

I don't like how Eldar look. I've heard Daemonhunters aren't suited to newbies and I don't like the idea of Tau - focusing on shootiness doesn't sound good to me.

If you don't know what you want you end up with a lot of stuff you don't.

i just say go necrons. if you like them, got a few models, then there good. Also you wont have to but to many models. orks are cool but expensive, becuase on the number of models you have to buy. Necrons was one of the armys i thought about collecting. ended up collecting Dark Angels. Ya just in my frank opion go necrons.

I don't have any models yet. The only models I have are a handful of Space Marines, which I used to learn how to paint. I know Orks take time to paint, but I have Uni holidays starting next week... sure, I have a heap of stuff to do (including earning some money to pay for this hobby) but I'm sure I can find time to paint some models.

I do like the Necron models... they're just... boring. I suppose that I could always start off with Necrons and learn how to play (I keep getting hold how forgiving they are) and then move onto Orks...

I've decided to go with Necrons. I had a look at the codex and wow... these guys are cool. Perfect for me to learn the game and painting techniques. I grabbed the Codex and soon I'll get the Necron Lord.

Yea eight hours for four boyz you really need to learn how to speed paint. This isn't a Deathwing army with only a few guys in it. If you keep going at 2 hours per boy (and i have 92 models in my 1500 point ork army) its going to take you YEARS to finish. I'm not going to even ask how you will paint a looted vehicle or ork dreadnought (they are hard to paint b/c of the tons of mixes of colors) I general speed paint about 7 orks at a time and it takes me about 3 hours to get them done. They look good (not great) but good enouf.
What is dis signature nonsence?! dem stupid human zoggers are always trien to confuze us.
