With every fiber of my being, I despise how Games Workshop has put so much money, time, and effort into the Space Marines...I despise how they have neglected countless other armies and instead focus all of their attention on their beloved Angels of Death. I despise how so many people play Space Marines instead of other armies.
So...why am I wanting to play a Space Marines army?
I want to play several armies, of course. But this is something that I would have thought would never happen...ever. I don't want to be another SM player who has a similar list to everyone else, or be the beloved of Games Workshop. But the fluff possibilities...
I don't know. Have I gone crazy? Maybe it's because I can't pick and choose any single army. Right now, I'm considering far too many armies...
2) Imperial Guard
4) Space Marines (*cringe*)
So what can I do? I need some sort of advice here!! :o
It's a very strange place to be.
Well, in the end you should do what your feel you will have the most fun playing.
I know I'm planing to do an SM army, but differently, I'll be doing a SM Bike Army(with Land Speeders), this lets me field a fun, fluffy army that, althought it is SM, is still fun and new!
Well, that's kind of an open ended question. If you can give us more details about what you want/like, then, we could probably help. Until then I will say go with the 'Nids. New codex, nice models and for some reason they seem to make a lot of rookies nervous.

I was very tempted, but while it would be fun to come up with fluff/model/play as them....they lack the individuality of characters (like HQ's and such) to really give a neat story..hm.Originally Posted by THE Hersh

Right now I have some DE warriors and a few Tau items, but even with a few added things I'm not sure if I want to continue with Tau...hmm.
I need some money, so I can grab the 'Nid codex and check them out.
I like "oddball" armies...so I'm going to have a lot of odd but fun biomorphs with the 'Nids, while still trying to be effective. I probably won't even pay attention to threads such as the one about "Bad Upgrades" or whatnot.
As for a Space Marine army, I'd want one that is different...definitely -not- a balanced list, but I don't necessarily want a bunch of Assault Squads or any of that. Though, I'm not sure.
Any and all advice is welcome..sigh.
EDIT: Also, a few things about a SM army:
1) They'd be fighting more for the salvation of the Imperium than for the Emperor...I've never been a big fan. Very much a divergent chapter, but I'd need them to be not traitors..just..not for the emperor. Hrm.
2) I do like bikes, and that's a pretty good idea...
3) I just want them to be different than all these countless SM armies I see all the time..hm.
I'm not really very up to date with fluff. I'm incredibly poor, so I don't buy any of these neat-o books and the likes GW publishes...which is a huge problem. I would really like to read up and learn, but..eh, whatever. Some of the "normal" things about Space Marines I'd want to change..
As to which army you end up playing: That decision it ultimately up to you. Just go with the one that feels "right"
If you do end up collecting Space Marines:
I have some sense of how you feel, but from the other side. I have been playing Space Marines since I started playing 40k, which was early in 2nd Edition. Over the years, I have had the distinctiveness of the army that I play diluted by the influx of new players with no appreciation and carbon copy lists. So I hamsting myself. I build my lists so that they are not perfect, usually nowhere near perfect. I take substandard lists, and rely on my tactical skill to win the game.
The traits system is extremely versatile, and many of the younger players abuse it in the attempt to get the "perfect" list, the one that will trounce all comers. Go the other way, and select traits that you like, but that powergamers will not select. Swift as the Wind, Purity Above All, and Scion of Mars are all traits that require skill to use properly, and while you can pretty much pick either Eye to Eye or Flesh Over Steel for any list without restricting yourself, Aspire to Glory is much more restrictive. Most Veterans will realise that you are aiming at a distinctive army as soon as they see this sort of list.
One last thing, unless you really want one, don't take a Chaplain. Yes they are the best HQ choice, but if you want a truly distinctive army, go with a Commander or Librarian.
Greetings from Planet X, I hope you enjoy your day.

Well, if you want different, the SMs have their trait system, which I really like. It actually lets you create your own chapter, not some knockoff of one of the big four, (or one of the ones listed in the "minidexes", ie. Armageddon).
The Tyranids, my main army these days, allows you to do almost anything you want. Personally, I love the new 'Nid codex.
Tau, don't now, never used them and only played them a few times.
Imp. Guard, heavy on the money. Other than that they also seem to have a wide variety of options.
Eldar, well, two words, Harlequins. I have only known two people to play them. And they are VERY cool, fluffwise.

I own both the IG and new SM codex.Originally Posted by THE Hersh

The problem with creating my own chapter is...well, the things that I'd want to change, are probably not supported by fluff. And my fluff knowledge is lacking, so I can't really back things up that well.
I do love Harlequins...but...see my problem? I want 'em all! Sigh.
Well, I've at least got my battle plan down:
I'm getting $50 soon.
This $50 is going towards: new Tyranids codex.
The remaining money will go either to: Space Marine Bikes or some 'Nids.
I will play both of these armies at some point in the future, I just need to decide which will come first, and after I read the 'Nid codex I'll decide. I'll link these two armies as I think it'll be great fun to write some fluff with two armies you're playing.
Whats GW gonna do? Throw you in jail if your fluff dosen't exactly match with thiers??? Thats nonsence, if you wanna do something different do and ignore all the losers who put you down for it, just look at all the diffrent things I do in my Sig, ORANGE GREY KNIGHTS?!?!?! Anything to get somebody to look at my army twice!Originally Posted by Lost Nemesis

And believe me, that's a SCARY idea!! I've seen some threads on here, and I've seen some really good ideas (that I really liked) shot down by some of these players who've read every single itsy bitsy "tome" of 40k fluff....it's freaky.
