I still haven't set it in concrete, so here is the ultimate question:
Dark Eldar or Eldar, for my next army? give me the pro's and cons...
TSg.t Zakarius Clay
142nd Cadian, Stationed Planet Skyfall B
4th Brigade, 1st Battalion, 1st Co.
'The Pathfinders', Drop Team - 6
Pssst.... give me kudos....
unique to a degree that some clubs have never even seen them played (and therefore don't know how to fight against them)
very low armor saves and no vehicles with armor greater than 11, which means you pay heavily for your tactical mistakes
ugly models (I suppose this is in the eye of the beholder)
War Record Since Sept 2005
Old Codex 48-20-9 Dark Eldar
New Codex 1-0-0 Dark Eldar
Both races are very similar although both require great tactics.
Eldar has a greater selection and many choices of different aspect warriors like scorpions, banshee's, swooping hawks, warp spiders, etc. Eldar is very fast and has some pretty good weapons. If used correctly they can be very deadly. Eldar are also very fluffy. Eldar also have probally the best phykers (i don't know how to spell it).
Dark Eldar are also very fast although don't quite have as much selection as Eldar. They have some similar weapons like the Dark Lance. Dark Eldar are also very fluffy. Dark Eldar have very weak armor and if you make one vital mistake in the game then you will probally lose with Dark Eldar; but, if used correctly then Dark Eldar are very deadly if you have mastered them.
I play both armies so i hope this helps. Good luck and I hope you like whichever new army you decide on.
Like he said, Dark Eldar are more of an experienced players army. It is a very punishing list that requires a degree of skill to use. If you decide to play Dark Eldar you will notice that your greatest advantage is your speed. Most, if not all, of your army should be mechanised, so your army will be moving 12" per turn, if not more. Coupled with Reaver jetbikes who can move 24" and assault 12" you are looking at short, bloody, games. Most games against DE usually end in turn 4/5, with either a crushing victory for either side.Originally Posted by wAr_GaMeR
- Speed + Manouverability. Means your opponent will have to be on the back foot, matching your deployment and attack. Read White Dwarfe #312 for more info.
- Offensive list. Notice that your basic warrior can be armed with 2 full on tank busting weapons. Tanks will not last long with multiple units of these. Also fast moving jetbike squadrons can be armed with blasters, shorter ranged equivalents of these weapons.
- Firepower. Many of your weapons have Ap 3 or under. Also have acess to disintergrator, one of the best weapons in the 40k universe in my opinion.
Favourite Army: Eldar
Currently Working on: Ulthwe Strike Force
Currently Using: Saim Hainn Wild Riders
Win Record: 13/9/4
- Sigh. Entered a games night tournament with my new 1000 pt Ulthwe Strike Force and got obliterated. So many marines these days with heavy bolters.
Fastest army in the game
Can shell out a world of pain
Great in hand to hand combat
DE warriors are the best unit in 40k imo(just dont get shot at)
the most fragile army in the game
the most unforgiving army in the game
All in all(and as said) Dark Eldar is definitely hardest army to master but once you do you´re in for one hell of a treat believe me

Wow, reading this I want to start DE now
My gaming group's new motto: That army you're using is overpowered because it hurts my guys, codex is broken and needs a rewrite.
The greatest con of Dark Eldar is that their models looks like ass... seriously, the Warriors and the skimmers are the only ones that look decent, but I wouldn't touch the rest with a 20-yard stick. If you like converting though, go ahead.
Warhammer Fantasy: Warriors of Chaos, High Elves
Warhammer 40k: Eldar, Space Marines, Orks
Yeah like victor said the DE models do look kind've...crapy although i like the look of the raiders
Ooh, it's been a while since I was last on this forum... anyhow, after playing dark eldar for a while I can conclude: 1. They have some potential, speed is your best friend. 2. You can have tons of dark lances. 3. The standard warrior is extremely horrible, tons of ap5 guns out there. Slaughtered unless out of range. 4. You WILL get laughed at by your friends. 5. Games are overkill for eitherside, the more experienced player + luck determines the victor. 6. Dark Eldar have basically no selection for units. 7. Dark Eldar have crappy ass models. 8. GW had some sort of guilt when creating this army. 9. Units are good, but I have come to the conclusion dark eldar units are not good enough yet to compete with other armies. 10. Relying on shadow field too much will hurt you. Basically, you have to put the hurt to your opponent before they do it to you. Am I for it or against it? Well you can make that assumption, but I am trying another army for a change. Dark Eldar are an extremely interesting army. -The Incubi

You find the standard warrior horrible? How can you say that? Good BS and WS, great initiative, fleet of foot. Great to fantastic weapon options for your warrior squads. And its all soooo cheap. Sure splinter rifles are pants, but two dark lances in a BS 4 group of cheap warriors. Thats a bargain.
And trust me, you will not get laughed at when your archon with agonizer and retinue of power weapon wielding madmen get into combat. I stear my chaos lords clear of those types.
Other than the crappy models my only problem is the first turn dependency. Those skimmers seem to be made entirely out of wet paper.
