Emperors children or eldar?
PROs CONs if possible.
Ok pick any army for me but i want to be able to dish out quite a bit of close combat but not too much just an above average amount, a little bit of shooty, phsycers im not big on them, i do want at least one thing in my army that can kick *** (eg.avatar, carnifex, wraith lord, c'tan), no horde armys i hate them, i want decent deffensive abilities like t4 cause this is wats veering me off eldar.
At the moment im looking at the CSM legions the SM legions and necrons.
i dont think anyone can convince you on what army to go for but i am going to say space marines. why? because they are a good allround army, not hoardy, they have some powerful units. i do belive poeple should start on space marines because they are simple to understand and they are easily the most played army in the game.
I agree with reflex, though after some time you may regret it noticing how many people actually play SM... Just kidding. I play SM myself and I can just recommend them.
You can specialize if you want to, but you needn't. A disadvantage is that you will never be as efficient in your 'specialized section' eg CC as other armies that are always specialized in it. Just a minor disadvantage, cause as time proceeds you will handle that.
The best thing with SM is that they can be painted very easily if want to be fast, but good. In addition you can use a more complicated colour scheme.
Conversions are an other advantage. Most of the minis consist of plastic. That's much easier to convert than tin (obviously)! Also some small conversions give even your troops more uniqueness.
Just imagine an own colour scheme with some minor conversions on every troop, it's awesome! Now compare it with an ordinary let's say Ultra Marines army to give a somehow extreme example.
The support concerning Fluff is the best of all 40k armies I think.
Hopefully this helped

Yea i played space marines as my first army, they were good because as said, they can be whatever you want them to. You can make a shooty army or a CC army. Plus they have dreadnaughts and they are awesome, same with rhinos and land radiers etc.
And with marines, you can make them up as you go along...paint scheme, fluff etc...v. customizable....plus there quite easy to use.
Be warned though, going into GW and Hobby Centers, you will probably get alot of Marine vs. Marine games, as alot of people play them.
Codex: Eldar comes out this fall. All indications are that it will rock.
RecklessFable's Journey to Mediocrity (Painting an IG army)
I've been addicted to World of Tanks lately and neglecting my IG... But it is so... much... fun!
nice link bug brother.
badquinton304, also have a look at this link here. It has a nice little flash thing at the bottom which shows the pros and cons and styles of play etc of each army. Quite helpful.
Help choosing an army
hope this helps
Here's my $.02:
I would recommend choosing an army that you like. By that - I mean one that you like the look of and if possible the background. Something that holds your interest. This will make it that much easier to sit down, assemble, and paint them!
Ultimately I don't think it matters what army you pick as I am sure no matter who you are you will have wins, losses, draws. All armies have their strengths and weaknesses but are mostly balanced. Anyone who doesn't really understand a list can put together a bad army - just as easily as someone who really knows the rules can exploit any army.
Me personally - I like the look of several armies and have a smattering of 3 already started. I have only played a handful of games (and have really enjoyed them) but nothing has given me more satisfaction than seeing a well done figure for an army that I enjoyed.
