Hi guys, First post ever on LO. I'm just getting into warhammer and am looking to start a army, the only problem is the costs of the models in my counttry. What would you guys say is the cheapest army to build ? I read the Eldar article on this site that said Alaitoc was cheap, but when I went to go look, I saw that 4 Rangers cost the same as 2 boxes of Chaos space marines.
So I'm wondering, what would you guys say is the cheapest army to build ? I only wanna get 500pts worth in the beginning. The only restriction is no SM, or WH, or DH.
Well SM are the cheapest typically but since they are out you are left with a few options-
They are cheap to start (the battleforce is awesome value - it comes with near 750 points of models) but get a bit more expensive when you add in other units (since most of the necron models are metal).
All you need to buy is a lord and you are ready to play.
It is worth noting that necrons suffer horribly at small point games due to their rules, so they work best when you have a 1500 + point army.
Though these guys can start cheap, if you collect them at this stage keeping to low points is a good idea (since they have a new codex on the way).
The eldar battleforce is a great start, all you need to buy is a farseer and you are ready to go.
The battleforce has everything you need (it being the only army outside of SM with a plastic HQ) and is around 500 points.
In my opinion, you want to pick an army you like the fluff of and the models are cool. Sure price is an issue, but if you only go on money you may get an army that just isn't you and you may have spent all that money for nothing.
Don't pick an army based on cost. You will probably, eventually spend a couple hundred dollars on it by the time it's 1500 points so why waste that money on an army you compromised to get.
Pick the army that gets you excited about playing and just accept that it may take you a few months more to get it up to 1500 points. All armies cost nearly the same up to 500 points. If you are penny pinching at 500 points then this probably isn't the hobby for you, yet.
Online is the cheapest war to buy models. LINK
War Record Since Sept 2005
Old Codex 48-20-9 Dark Eldar
New Codex 1-0-0 Dark Eldar
the fewer the models you have the cheaper it will be.
it might be tough to play, especially first starting out because everyone you play will outnumber you.
but just gof or whatever army you want then try to load up on the highest point cost models you can.
a "godzilla" tyranid army is a good example. instead of hording as many bugs as possible you bring as many monstrous creatures as you can. so instead of having 200 models on the board youll have less then 50.
or like was mentioned above, just use ebay. just today i bought about 1000 points worth of 40k for 55 bucks.
