I was thinking of getting a close combat army that isn't overplayed or easily predictable like the World Eaters or Tyranids... I don't want dark eldar since they're not sold in my nearby store and I'd prefer to not order online. I was thinking of a custom SM chapter but is that to plain? I know it's the most played army...
Craftworld Eldar could be nice. They can be designed to be a very deadly close combat army, albeit very specialised.
Daemonhunters / Grey Knights are also a good option, as they can be deadly in CC.
Slaaneshi or Undivided Chaos can make good CC armies as well, especially using Daemons (Daemonettes especially can be nice).
What are you looking for, a bit more specifically?
Something that when you get into close combat, which is the key, rips apart the enemy, but has decent backup support... I was thinking daemonhunters/grey knights but someone once told me that they lose most of the time... plus there is little variety? I REALLY like the look and fluff for daemonhunters though.
Demonhunters are good. They're a tricky army to play though. On the positive side, they move, shoot, and assault. You just need to remember they cost a lot of points compared to many armies.
Speed Freaks Ork armies can be fun and challenging as well. they're very much CC, and can get a looted Russ or a looted Basilisk. both are not bad considering orks really can't shoot too good.
There are CC type forces that can be made from a lot of the codexes. effectiveness varies. for instance, a WitchHunters CC list with 9 Penitent Engines and Arco-Flagellents is fun, but pretty hard to play. Tyranid Genestealer swarm, not as hard to play.
It sounds like you want everything on a stick.
This is possible, however.
You can be as unique as you like with them. They can (currently) be customised to fill any role and do damn good at it.
Then again.. there's always orks who are insane in CC.
