@Brinkosanity: I think Necrons are very cool and they have some really nice units. Don't really know why your mates wouldn't like to play against them:/ sounds a bit strange...
But both the Necrons and Tyranids have one thing in common that I kind of dislike and that is a lack of personalities.
I like to have a more "real person"-background to my army. Like this is him and that is Jim. And for that I think SoB would be great. They have some awsome models and can be quite good at a bit of this and a bit of that.
It is also (I think) easier to change your army with them then the other two.
If you want to go this or that way.
Today I'd like to have a shooty army, Necrons or SoB.
Today I'd like to have a Close Combat army Tyranids or SoB.
I'd like a mix...SoB.

Now I was really Leaning towards the Necrons, but my friend says that no one plays with them and that no one would want to play me if I play as them. I dont know if its true or not, but i wasnt sure. he plays Space Marines and he said that i would like the Dark Eldar, but they dont appeal to me as much as the others I listed. Can anyone spare some insight on how they function??

What draws you towards an army? Fluff (story), Style of play, Model options (tanks, guys etc..)

I'm not sure what your friend means with the Necrons.. personally from my small experience, they seem boring (drones... no personality) but thats just me, as for noone playing with them or against them.. well i've played against them and I've seen people playing with them. It could be something to do with your locals...

Hey Brink, I got into the game recently as well, and like you also had a long hiatus, here are my thoughts.

1) Play the Dawn of War games. Especially since you played the tabletop, you'll know what's going on game wise and get a feel for the armies again. They're also great games with the original and two expansions.

2) Go to a store on league night or something and watch the other players.

Necrons are fine starting army. Easy to paint and get on the board, cheaper. Downside I've seen is that Necrons don't have much close combat flexibility and you're never going to have a epic close game. The whole army "phases out" when a large majority of your troops die so there's not a lot of last stand potential. People will play your necrons too.

Dark Eldar are NOT a starter army.

Sisters are one of the best themed 40k armies and have great fluff design. Downside is they're mostly metal (meaning $$$). They also occupy an odd niche between marines and guard. They're less straightforward than Necrons.

'Nids are the organic close combat verson Necrons in a sense. Nid army tend to be larger, requireing more painting. However, the have one of the best written codexes out in my opinion in terms of balance, troop customization and gameplay. Also, you get a nice starter force in Battle for Macragge box.

It really sounds like necrons are what you want, so play them. You'll be investing a pretty large amount of time into a new army, so make sure it's your favorite.

I play Dark Eldar, so I'll chime in my two cents.
Before I played them, I played Uthwé eldar for about a year and a half. That is no longer an option. Eldar still are. They are difficult to play, but not impossible to play. They need decent tactics and coordination to win.
Dark Eldar are a different story. They are HARD to play. They have paper thin armor, no enhancing upgrades for this, and even their infantry are made out of tissue paper.
However, they are fast. Faster than craftworld eldar, faster than pretty much anything else out there. They also dish absolutely ridiculous amounts of fire in ranged and CC. However, they need to attack such that the enemy has nothing left the next turn. or you will fall hard and fast. They require fast and precise application of force to win a lot. They are hard to play, but quite rewarding when played well. You tend to either win big or lose big.

i was thinking about starting 40k and i was wonding what army to pick. I would be spending around 100 dollars to begin with and buying one unit/model every month so i can slowy amass a force with out the blunt trama to my wallet.=) anyways knowing really nothing about 40k myself ive picked a couple armies to chose from:

Eldar: basicly i like the walker-thingys as they look cool, also the basic warrior dudes look neat too.

Dark eldar: look like eldar cept crappier, but the warrior guys look cooler.

Black templars: these guys look tight, with the cloaks and stuff, I dont really get how each chapter is different and how much i would have to spend on conversion packs, but they look cool.

basicly these are my 3 chocies, but i might do tau if someone explains the rules and stuff and how tau would be good(they look the same as eldar)
Im looking for a flexible force that can do a lot of things for not a lot of cash,(also it must be elite, i hate hordie armies)

thanks in advance

Flexible, and not horde... I think you've just pinned Eldar, if you like the looks. Eldar are fast but fragile (not quite as fast or fragile as the Dark Eldar, though) and require some skill to use, as each of the units in the army fulfill one precise role, and they all come together to achieve the plans.

That said, they can be used in CC and shooting about equally, and excel in both. So if you like the models or fluff, I'd recommend picking up the codex to check 'em out!

I have been thinking of starting 40k after playing WFB. I cant decide between Tyranids and Imperial Guard(I know, completely different) I like nids because of the nice customization options and that they are similar to Lizardmen, my FB army. Also the fact the nids are world ravaging aliens is cool. On the other hand there is imperial guard. IG has some awesome tanks, and the troop choices look cool. Most likely i would run a fast mobile list with many tanks and troops in transports, or a nice shooty army with basalisks and Leman Russes and troops to protect them staying back and pounding the crap out of the opposition. Any insight would be appreciated.

Well, the two armies you picked tend to have one thing in common, and that is they're both horde armies. Horde Tyranids usually involves loads of guants supported by tough Carnifexes and Hive Tyrants. Guard really relies on their superior numbers to simply take a war of attrition against their enemy and simply outlast them.

You've pointed out some of the perks of both armies. However, I think that it'd be good if you try guard. It'll be a nice refreshing change from Fantasy with the addition of tanks and what not. Check out the Imperial Guard boards and look especially for Mechanized armies, that seems to be what you're most interested in.
