I've been collecting for a while-dipping in and out of 40k, fantasy, different armies etc, but now I'm trying out DH. However, throughout all of it, I still haven't worked out if less is more, or if more is more? To have hundreds of basic guardsmen, with just lasguns to pour over an enemy, or have a few squads of tooled up GK, for example? Hundreds of Empire militia, or a few Knights? or a balance? any ideas?
Thanks, much appreciated.
It all depends on what you prefer and how good you are. It's much harder to use a few tooled up GK because you'll always be outnumbered. It also all depends on the army you'll be up against, you don't want a cc army like tyranids or khorne getting into your lines of guardsmen. You should play around with a few ideas and see which one fits you best.

Well, if the points match up, they are *supposed* to be equivalent. But I think that an over reliance on either is bad.
There should be a balance with this (as with most things).

You're confusion isn't in the army, it's in a broader understanding of military tactics.
Take the movie "300" which I'm sure you saw or heard of. There less was more in that they had elite troops fighting on a narrow front against many weaker ones.
A good example of less is more is 20 guardmen swarming and killing a hive tyrant or greater daemon. There you have a lot of weak units tying up and possibly killing a very expensive and useful one.
The big thing to remember is to commit your army list properly. If you are going to have lots of weaker units, then do that, but don't pepper it with unecessary elites and vica versa.
There's also the middle ground where your units are function enough to have minor edge over every other unit is some way, whether slightly better shooting with comprable hand to hand, or more manuaverable, etc, ect.
Hope that helps a little.
