Obviously, there can only be one overall captain of a space marines company. But how come then in the codex it lets you take two commanders as HQ choices, when they are considered Captains? Are they second in commands or completely different ranks?
After running and grabbing my trusty marine dex, I have thought up a few plausable answers to your question.
1, One captain per company right? Well what if he was grooming a successor to his role as captain or training a replacement for another company?
2, If you read alot of BL books you will find that ALOT ( ie most if not all) of the main charactors in the books, while being regular marines are almost superhuman even for a space marine. Why not use the second HQ slot for a renound hero of the chapter. He might be on de-tached duitys, on a special assignment, He could be a well known chapter hero who is assessing the worthyness of a squad sergent who is being considered for promotion.
The possiblilites are endless. Just use your imagination. I can see them being different ranks ( LT's and so forth) but for game purpaces they are so close statwise to a captain that there is no point in making a different entry for them. Way back in RT days they used to have a Chapter LT, but hes long gone.
Hope this helps a little with your question. If you have anymore questions please feel free to post them or PM me. =o]
FluffMaster on a mission to turn people to the Sisters of battle, yes folks it's all about SoB squads in Repressors with lots of flamer templates for the win.
You could also say that more than one company of marines from the chapter is fighting at once. If there is a real big threat a chapter will send more than one company an example would be Armeggedon(sp) more than one company from the Blood ANgels and Salamanders to only name a few were present in the fighting.
But dont go throwing away FGM's idea, that is also a very good theory, because if you read the BL books normal marines are gods even to their other marines. SO they could have a lot of talent, or just be something special in the chapter.
