From the bits and pieces I have read it seems the Tau have been gen-engineered. They are often said to have been "advanced" evolutionary.
What does everyone else think??
It's not certain they were actively genetically engineered, but they went through an abnormally fast evolutionary spurt. They evolved more in 5,000 years than the human race did in millions, and built a spacefaring society to boot.
The biggest things are the sudden caste divergence and the Ethereals.. The caste divergence is explainable, but it happened really really fast, far faster than it should have done. The Ethereals are the ultimate mystery, as they just randomly showed up one day (just as the Tau race was about to war itself into extinction) and used their pheremonal control to take control of society and unify the castes into the Tau Empire.
So, while there's no direct evidence, there's enough wierdness and coincidence to suggest that something is going on with the space dolphins.

I won't give the story of 'Xenology' away, as it's quite a good little mystery, but suffice to say the findings don't get reported back to anyone else.
Feel free to pm me The Giant Mantis.
Xenology is out of print now so no chance of getting to read it.
In the book "Fire Warrior" based on the game I believe the Geu'la (Humans) Capture a Ethereal and take it for interrogation and later on analysis (Cut the alien open) but is saved through the might of a single Fire Warrior. *Shrug* I think so anyway, I was never much interested within about the Tau, I found their history less.. Interesting than most others races within the galaxy.
Anyway. Not to spoil Xenology any, but the analysis they undertook showed an almost 1:1 correlation between the Ethereal's pheromone organ, and a similar phermone organ in a hive insect race from the other side of the galaxy, despite the impossibility of the races ever coming into contact.
This has led to countless CTDI (Ctan did it!) and TOODI (The Old Ones Did It!) theories.
Its a shame Xenology is out of print. Black Library stops its print life on its best titles way too fast...
Yeah, Xenology was a lovely book, but a lot of the metaplot stuff is just plain screwed up, and the guy's theory was pretty much TOODE (The old ones did everything!.)
He also claims the Eldar Gods were the old ones.. Except that the Eldar Gods were still kicking around until Slannesh beat the crap out of them in about 30,000AD, and the Old Ones vanished millions of years before, at the end of the War in Heaven.Well.. The game was a first person shooter..In the book "Fire Warrior" based on the game I believe the Geu'la (Humans) Capture a Ethereal and take it for interrogation and later on analysis (Cut the alien open) but is saved through the might of a single Fire Warrior. *Shrug* I think so anyway, I was never much interested within about the Tau, I found their history less.. Interesting than most others races within the galaxy.
On the history, I used to agree with you, but there's a lot of delightfully sinister and mysterious stuff buried in there..
