This is a part modeling, part fluff post, so apologies in advance if it's in the wrong place.
Just looking for a little insight as to where stormtroopers come from, and how they are trained. Are they a unit created "in house," that is, from members of a regiment's own, or are they trained somewhere else, then shipped in as an elite, but "outsider" unit?
I'm really trying to get at WYSIWYG rules for them. Yes, I know they need to have "hellguns," and need to be wearing something that suggests the carapace armour, but what about their overall appearance? Seems as though they all look the same, no matter what the rest of the regiment looks like. Is this just because of the limitations of the metal models, or is there a fluffy reason for this? I ask because I have an army in mind using troops that resemble Tallarns (loose, desert-style wrappings), and the "standard" stormtroopers would look out of place. Further, if I used the grenadiers doctrine, that would nearly kill my idea for originality, if I'm forced to stick with the "standard," Kasrkin-esque uniform. Is it fluffy to have a unit of stormtroopers that somehow resemble the tallarn?
Stormtroopers are trained at a Schola Progenium from an early age. They are trained with better gear and in different tactics compared to your regular guardsmen and all their training is carried out apart from the rest of the Guard.
Generally they all wear Carapace armour, use hellguns and have access to a variety of grenades. The regular Storm trooper models represent Kasrkins from Cadia and can be seen as teh 'typical' storm trooper. Of course there are variations unique to different planets. Forge World have their Death Korp Storm troopers who wear the trademark Death Korp trenchcoat. So I would say that it is ok to invent your own Strom troopers, but remember that they should be bulky and such because of the carapace armour.
Do note there is a difference between Kaskin and Stormtroopers. As the Camel said, Stormtroopers proper are trained seperate from planetary regiments, which is the reason they look the same is because ST companies all pretty much come from one place.. Kaskin are a planetary regiments equivelent to ST's. If Cadia has their own ST's, then it is not hard to imagine Krieg or Tallarn having their own elite troopers.
Bear in mind that it's perfectly acceptable to model stormtroopers who look a little different. Either they can be explained away as heavy infantry units attached to the regiment itself (if you want them to look like the other regimental troops,) or you can say they come from Progenium academy world X where they use Y pattern armour instead of Z pattern amour.
If I were to be really strict, then fluffwise Progenium stormtroopers should probably wear environmentally sealed amour (hence the re-breathers) rather than just a bulked up breastplate like the officers get, but that's ultra-picky.
But generally, so long as they look a bit bulkier, you shouldn't get many of complains. Plenty of people convert them from plastic Cadians.
anyone know where I can get the Stormtroopers with rebreathers? Personally I like them a lot more than the Kaskrin, esp. for my Inq army b/c they remind me of the stormtroopers from the movie Alien 3
If you win games against Nids with flamers (aside from the Inferno Cannon on a Hellhound), you're playing against opponents with stupidity of impressive magnitude.
I'd give mail order a try.. I don't think they're listed in the IG section any more, but do a search for 'stormtrooper' and you should come up with something.
I prefer them too.. The 'padded' armour looks better to me than the plates the kasrkin get.
Those same plates make you wish for an armour save better that they have, no? lol.
Yes well, as stated above, any of the Imperial Guard regiments is bound to have their elite footsoldiers slogging somewhere with hellguns, special weapons and lots of grenades. As for a little tidbit of humour, many of the standard Guardsmen nag the trained schola progenium recruits, calling them "Glory-Boys" for instance. Heh, I guess it's accurate .
What do Khorne Berzerkers say to Necrons after chopping some of their bits off? "BLOOD FOR... Eh? Come on! You just take the fun out of it... Scream! Yell! Awww... not even a trace of guts..." *sniffles and kicks dirt*
"You can go far with a smile. You can go even further with a smile and a gun"
But getting back to the issue, those models I'm making are for my Daemonhunters army. My IG regiment's infantrymen will look like the Tallarns, meaning most of my army will feature the loose clothing and headwraps. I have no idea how to make a stormtrooper regiment that "fits in" with this, but perhaps I should take up this angle in the modeling forum. You guys have answered this from a fluff perspective. Thanks!
heres an idea. Dont even call em stormtroopers. Call em something like "Tallaran Carapace Lancers" or something like that. They could still have the same stats as ST's, but fluff em up and make em your own elite troopers. Hell, even say they were trained on the planet too! and then fluff up thier history and such.
