This is something that comes up in so many sources, and as far as I can tell it's a mistake.
ALL Space Marines have this gland that nullifies the effects of poisons, right? So why is it that in so many sources, Space Wolves (when they're not killing heretics and xenos scum) love nothing more than getting rip-roaringly drunk? Alcohol shouldn't work on them, given that it IS a (relatively mild) poison, not a drug as such.
Sure, Space Wolves are basically high-tech Vikings in the 40K universe, but that doesn't explain the inconsistency in the fluff.
Perhaps they can nullify the gland in some way by controlling it. Or maybe they just drink so much that not even the gland can't stop it. Granted, that's going to be one very long bathroom trip. :drinking:
"If you can wait til I get home, then I swear we can make this last."
If I remember my fluff correctly, the stuff that space wolves drink isn't merely alcohol. It's a combination of herbs chemicals and a bunch of other stuff. It's basically so strong and noxious that it overloads their implant, which leads to intoxication.
I have no doubt that if any other human tried to drink it they'd drop dead within minutes.
"You challenge me knowing that I am Xiahou Dun!?"
It's not an inconsistency, Fenrisian ale is different from most others in that it is specially engineered to circumvent/ovewhelm a Marine's natural resistance to poison, allowing them to get drunk. Of course, if an ordinary human were to drink it, it would probably be pretty harmful or at the very least make them go blind, or something. I somehow doubt that more potent drinks are brewed anywhere else in the Imperium, though...
You see how much pure alcohol you can swill before going blind. That's not mead they're drinking. That is liquid fun.
Besides, they're Space Wolves. Apart from the sex, they do everything Vikings do.

Mr_Wayne: "Some people believe that the World Eaters do not field any ranged weaponry. Those people often die at a distance."
I'm guessing that, as people have said, they drink stuff that's so potent and in such vast quantities so quickly that their second stomach can't filter it properly. This explains a glorious piece of fluff that's in WD205 (it may be elsewhere, I don't know), where Ragnar's company have a drinking contest, where the winner is the first one to pass out.
Think about it. In order to make himself pass out, he has to have the speed and probably strength to down the stuff seriously quickly, and retain enough of it to stop the rest of his digestion completely shutting down and evacuating everything he's ingested. That's one hell of a feat.
If you read some of the older 40k novels that feature Ragnar Blackmane and the Space Wolves, they talk about how Fenrisian Ale is alcohol mixed with a plant concoction that suppresses their poison-cleansing gland and allows them to get drunk. I always thought this would be a particularly nasty formula for someone to pick up, say an assassin, who wanted to poison some marines to death. Hope this helps.
Speaking of which, I think just that very event happens in one of the newer Ragnar Blackmane books. Or something akin to it, anyway.
Ah, I see. That makes sense.they talk about how Fenrisian Ale is alcohol mixed with a plant concoction that suppresses their poison-cleansing gland and allows them to get drunk.
Did any of you ever hear about Andre the Giant's legendary capacity for alcohol? Well, he'd have been smaller and weaker than an average Space Marine... which leads me to think that a Space Wolf drinking binge would be a messy and dangerous place to be at. Space Marines getting drunk and brawling... it's a terrifying thought.
Reading all this really makes me wonder.
1. The massive amount of the "alcohol" that a marine must drink. Relative terms just saying, the bigger you are, the more you drink....period.
2. If that's true....the AMAZING bar tabs hahhaa. "Put it on the chapters tab!"
