Having just read the IG besting SMs thread, i had a thought. A legion that excels in last stands. I just love the thought of last stands!. The chaplains/Apostles (cant decide if chaos or loyalist) walking through the ranks, telling them to keep fighting, the commander waiting to lead a charge out of a gate... i love it!!!!!
So, my colour scheme. Red with white lining, gold detail and the roman praetorian helmets.... You will recognise this if you recognise my title name. Yes its a shameless rip off, but i dont care!
So, any legians that already excel in this particular area (i know iron warriors and imperial fists excel in seige / defense, but apart from them) or do i have free rein?
Also, what traits would be good???
I think you may have nailed the legions on the head...as for traits, I think Never Despair would be the number one choice...just keep going, keep fighting, never give up. As for a second trait, perhaps Take the Fight to Them, so that you can equip every tactical marine with a chainsword...these are brutal cc warriors you're referring to in your title, just kind of fits the theme. Eye to Eye is a thematically fitting drawback, and perhaps Faithful Unto Death and Death Before Dishonor. Note that DBD and ND are opposite sides of a coin and cannot be taken together.
Well, you may want to shift your focus/wording a bit, as it's kinda difficult to arrange last stands all the time. Maybe you could have a legion that could excel in the most desparate of situations where few could ever concieve victory.
As far as heritage, I know that the Mantis Warriors have an ability where they can focus on one singular task/objective/enemy and anything else becomes invisible to them. This also gives them increased concentration, reflexes, etc. The Mantis Warriors are rumored to have originated from one of the 'Fists'. I think it's Imperial, but could be Crimson. You may be able to change this ability a little, seeing as how it's irreversable once it's turned on. But just an idea.
Oh, and I love the Roman Legionaire helmets. I believe that WD 300 (US) has instructions on making the mohawk/thingie.
"If you can wait til I get home, then I swear we can make this last."
I meant a chapter that uses tactics like in 300.... E.g, finding a canyon, and holding the entrance at all costs. So the in game tactic i would use would be Castling. And i would use units like predators, castellan whirlwinds, devastators, shooty termies, chaplains, veterans and tactical squads.
Woohoo! off to make a list and will list traits in a few mins
I think you need to spend more time on your floor.
2500 Black Templars
I don't think there's any such thing as a chapter that excels at last stands. The closest, I think, would be triumphing against all odds in long and protracted combats, which is not something that Marines can necessarily do well and thus would be a bit more unique. The Imperial Fists would be an example of this, as would the Iron Hands, though they are better known for their reverence of technology. Despite the culture and upbringing of a Chapter's recruits, most leaders know that there is no greater death knell for a Space Marine than to be put on the defensive. That being said, they can do well in holding actions and at the tip of the spear, where they establish a breach and hold it while the Guard come pouring through. All that kind of stuff would be fun and it's a bit more colourful than just saying last stands.

Disadvantageseath Before Dishonour
And now i have some fluff ive been wanting to put into use for some time.
This is my first major fluff writing, please be kind =)
"Brother Phallonis looked over the window ledge he had been firing from. Pure black ichor ran down the streets and the carapaces of the Tyranids made a 10 foot high wall halfway down the road. The *Insert chapter name here* had been holding off at the gate to the second level for three months. The walls were made inaccessible by the 9th company. Having "borrowed" the imperial heavy weaponry, they were armed, to a man, with heavy bolters and lascannons. No beast had cleared the almost vertical walls. And the First and Fourth (Phallonis' own) had been holding the gate for almost seven days. After today, third company would take over.
Suddenly, Iorctus, the Codicier aiding fourth company, keeled over as if shot by a manstopper (i love those things). "They are coming" said Iorctus. Hive Fleet Apocrypha (my own, the first name was fluffy, as my explanation was the imperium ran out of names.... but i changed it =P) had been invading the city for a month.
Looking over the window ledge Phallonis saw large shapes dimly outlined in the arch they had come to nickname the Cadian gate, because of the hellspawned terrors that spilled out of it. Then, in a chittering heaving mass, gaunts charged forth from the dimness. As soon as they did, first company opened up with their cyclone missile launchers, launching frag missiles into the teeth of the tyranids.
"HOLD!!!!" shouted Phallonis, knowing that the gaunts were not yet in range of Fourth's guns. The exception, was the gesture he made to Brother Grek, Who added his missile launcher to the firsts own. Greks missile flew high over the gaunts, and Captain Venlan of the first yelled "Watch your target, brother!" over the vox link. A few seconds later he was forced to take his words back, as Grek's missile flew over Venlan's head and blew the Lictor that had been about to pounce on First company out of the air. Grinning, Venlan turned round, and mock saluted to Grek. Grek bowed, and turned his attention back to the gaunts, as did Venlan, his combi flamer blaring.
"See, "Iorctus remarked " The trick to beating Tyranids with mortal weaponry is not to take your finger off of the trigger". Laughing, Phallonis yelled "Fire at will!" The bolters, assault cannons, plasma guns, stormbolters and sheer resistance of the Fourth and First hit the Tyranids like a solid wall. Gaunts died in droves, and a mighty psychic blast tore a brood of Tyranid warriors in two. The blast had been the combined efforts of Iorctus, and Epistolary Vannus, of the Third. The pair of them stood atop the gate, smiting the synapse creatures back into whatever hell spawned them.
Then a Monstrous beast, bigger than a dreadnought, stormed into view. Phallonis commanded his squad to focus fire on the Carnifex. Still, it marched on, its skin regenerating as it was torn away. Then, as the creature approached the gate Iorctus and Vannus jumped off the gate together, force spears pointing downwards. Like a pair of flaming angels, they descended onto the back of the carnifex. Vannus promptly cut the massive claws that were reaching for them in two, and Iorctus shoved his force weapon into the beasts brain.
The duo jumped off of the carnifex as it skidded to a halt in front of the foot of the stunned Venlan. Turning to Phallonis, Vannus said
"I have come to releive you, brother"
To be continued.......
Just read your replies (was typing) and how so with the death knell??
What of the Imperial fists, the story in the codex when they hold out against a hive fleet? (I didnt get this story from there btw, i had it floating about in my head since before i got the marine dex). I dont think its a death knell, just exceptionally uncommon, i.e. the dark angels, or the fists. Thats two chapters out of how many???
And what do you mean with the mantis warriors? "everything disappears =S"
Well honestly, it feels like you just want a kick ass battle to write, which is cool and all, but a chapter that specializes in last stands is not gonna last for long. Space marines strive on quick and efficent strikes on the enemy that eliminate order and cause chaos and confusion amongst the ranks. But really, i do like your idea, of a straightforward, hold the line! rank and file, last stand bolter blazing chainsword slashing chapter. A good chapter to use for this are the Salamanders, as they are an elitiest chapter who tend to go for this straightforward approach that we're all drooling over here. *Wishes he hadnt already painted his marines, so HE could go salamanders....thunderhammers and plasma guns....drool.......drool....*
