Proteus IV was once a thriving hive world, whos population numbered in the millions. It was a perfect 'poster child' for the Imperium, a world in which humanity was enslaved by chaos, until the armies of the Imperium released her and her children from their grasps. Prosperity reigned, as Proteus IV became a major supplier of arms and armor for the Imperial Guard. However, the main downfall for Proteus was the fact she was just outside the 'safe zone' from which xenos and chaos had been pushed back. The populus feared that one day chaos would return to enslave them, and the populus lived in fear. And those fears came to fruitation when an odd object fell from the sky. It was not a meteor, but some kind of living organism, and it was pulsing with life. Nothing came of this however, and it was written off as some wreckage perhaps from a fleeing alien ship, chased off by the Imperial Navy.
2 years past, and the spore was all but forgotten by Proteus IV, pushed far back in her populus' mind. The seed of the Vanguard had pulsed, refusing to die, and it did not take long for its breatheren to arrive from across a limitless galaxy. It started slowly, handfulls of the population slowly died off from some odd sickness that corroded their bodies from the inside out. Yet as the High Lord Trannus tried to write it off as a plague wrought upon them from the many offworlders traveling through, the death toll rose. It was not long before the two suns of Proteus were blouted out by some unseen force.
No one knew what they were, none knew what they looked like. All that was known was that screams of horror pierced the silence of night, and a strange rustling, as if locuts or some other native bug, were flying through the streets. Bodies would be found in their homes, their organs consumed it seemed, as if wild beasts had stormed the houses. Trails of ooze let into the houses, and trails of blood led out. Yet the creatures responsible were never found. It was not until the larger beings came forth from the darkness, rending their way through the hive structures that their foe was realized. Tyranids had found their way to Proteus IV, and consumed and destroyed city after city. The people tried in vain to contact the outside world, to beg for the Imperium to give them aid, yet it was as if these being blocked any form of comunication. Proteus fell in 3 days, an entire world was slaughtered, and no trace save the rubble was left when the Imperial Navy came for supplies and refitting.
In the past 4 years, 3 more planets have fallen, left shells devoid of life in a trail leading towards the planet of Terra, the throne of the Emporer. It is all to clear the tendril leading towards Holy Terra is that left by a Hive Fleet, as others have sprouted in recent years, confirming that the Tyranids had returned, in mass, and the Hive Fleet known as Maraacus was leading the way...
Eh. I'd really like something more. This little tid bit of story is alright, if you want to keep it thats cool, but make some punctuation adjustments if you will.
Maybe some more history of the swarm, some special characteristics?
