Finding myself with alot of time on my hands and provoked by the constant stream of utterances like "elves are gay", "eldar are gay", "marines are gay" etc, at my local GW, I had a think about the races of wh40k's attitudes towards Glbt-people (that's gay-, lesbian- bi- and transgender-people).
The Imperium of man does not strike me as a place very tollerant of homosexuality, based as it is on a dark vision of catholic europe during the middle ages.
There is, however, nothing to suggest this in fluff, so I guess it could vary from world to world, but judging by their xenofobia and generally backwards thinking, that seems unlikely.
Space marines (loyalist at least) are completely a-sexual, they exist only for war, the only love they feel is for their chapter, their primarch and the emperor.
Ever since I read Elfquest, I have thought of elves (in space or otherwise) to be uniformally bisexual. To them love is not limited by gender, and may be another reason for there being so few Eldar.
Orks, Tyranids and Necrons do not have genders and do not reproduce by sexual means (except for the necrons who do not reproduce at all)
As for the Tau, I'm not so sure, but they seem enlightened enough not to have a problem with things like that.
I know wh40k is just a game based on war and strategy and I don't go around thinking about things like this all the time, I was simply fascinated by the apparent homophobia among the local gamers. So, please, no comments along the lines of "Get a life" or "you're gay", i am merely interested in whether any of you lot has thought about this as well.
Thanks/ Master Sandalphon
I think apperant homophobia thrives in any environment that consists largely of young males. And I also think there is not really much to it but empty words. And if it really bothers you, why not make a good old pink Emperors Children army, they are far more than gay and will take good care of anyone who opposes their right to be so.
Just put them on the table while loudly proclaim "This is Emperors Children and man are they gay!" or build your own version of the "PinkMarines" LINK
Back on topic though, I think there are various levels of opnemindedness regarding sexuality in the Empire of Man. On some planets I imagine it's like "the thing" to be. If you are not gay you'll never make a career, while on others it might be seen as a sign of daemon worship.
As for the other races? I really don't have a clue. Some like you say are not sexual in any way, even to begin with (Necrons, Orks etc) and some are just a bit to alien to imagine (Kroot, Vespids?)
Man, this topic has so much potential to be closed in a heap of flaming debris. But yeah, I get what you're saying. I'd imagine it varies from planet to planet, race to race, etc. Just come up with your own conclusions, there's nothing really to disprove you.
I also imagine that GW are avoiding this in fluff on purpose...
Yeah, GW are not going to address stuff like that in fluff.
I sort of wrote this thread in the heat of passion, I suppose, but not because the homophobia was bothering me.
am i the only one to get a "real jock" banner underneath this thread...
...are not talking about this.

Mr_Wayne: "Some people believe that the World Eaters do not field any ranged weaponry. Those people often die at a distance."
i suppose the point is that the fluff really wouldnt benefit from tackling real-world issues like sexuality, religion, politics etc. and in fact it would end up being counter productive.
Let just assume sexuality is an unimportant issue in the 41st millenium!

It's a good topic, and was presented in a reasonable manner.
None the less I'm closing it, as it's a bit too close to comfort for topics which the owner of LO does not want on LO.
HEZU!! WHERE'S MY KARMOON SNAAAACK!?!?
