The Emperors Children launch a surprise raid against a military Imperial world equidistant between Tau Space and Imperial Space. They conquer the world, and then ask for aid from the Tau in a crusade against the Imperials. Could the Tau be bought off, knowing obviously the Chaos have no interest in the Greater Good?
Maybe giving them Warp Drives to study, or something? Would the Tau help the Chaos?

It is possible, if the Chaos disguised their chaotic nature. For example, if they pretended to be just rogue factions. I don't think the Tau need warp drives to study. They have allies with warp drives. They just don't have navigators.
It is possible, but not on the long term.
Also remember that Tau barely even have a presence in the warp, so possession would be hard, as well as corruption.
Lastly, a full on assault on Imperium Space is beyond the Tau's current power, and they would likely not want to anger the Imperium and incite another crusade on the level of Damocle's.
