This is the fluff behind my Inquisitor, but i dont need to explain if you read it
Please take the first few chapters with a pinch of salt, as im bending a few things to make it faster, so i needn't make it longer to get into the action
Squad Artemis, of the Ultramarines, Transmission.
Real time recording, I speak into this data slate as we descend towards the fortified castle of the renegade Inquisitor, Domnus. Having been accused of communication, or worse, with Daemons, he must be brought to justice. As we descend from orbit, the Hereticus Inquisitor is commanding the seige of the bastion we must assault. Our job is to storm in once breached. Orbital assault would be suicide, considering the terrain and orbital defences.
Our transport has just landed, I shall make contact again once we are finished with our purgatory duties.
Artemis and his squad each took a flamer in addition to their normal boltgun. Their flamers were loaded with Holy Promethium, to purge the witches. They had landed a good two thousand metres from the beginning of the incline that led up to the Bastion. An Imperial artillery company was making them pay hell for leather for building their defences in a raised position. As the Ultramarines cast their views towards the giant bastion far in the sky, they took in their surroundings.
The pale sun of the planet made the giant obsidian fortress look like a spike potruding directly from the deepest reaches of hell. Its ground defence guns, which, from here, looked like salvaged heavy bolters and autocannons, were far outstripped by the artillery of the Imperial Army. The Inquisitor must be somewhere further up the lines, but a Hereticus Rhino APC was provided to transport the marines once the walls, or gate, was breached.
Inquisitor Revii walked into the command tent. Staring down the Imperial Commander, he swiftly ordered the destruction of the walls within an hour, and that the defences be taken out within even less time. The Commander swiftly tried to interrupt, saying such walls could not be broken within this time, with the artillery present, but the Inquisitor interrupted.
"Hear me, as the voice of the Hereticus, if I am to order the destruction of the Heretic, you shall carry out this command lest you join him in his conflagration, upon his funeral pyre."
The artillery were, rather swiftly, and with a bit more attitude than necessary, to increase the firing capacity, those walls were to be brought down. However, the Inquisitor had not informed the Regiments Commanding Officer of the presence of the Adeptus Mechanicus. As they spoke, one of their great god engines marched closer to this blot on the great parchment of the Imperium. Soon however, the Scout Titan's footfalls would be felt.
Revii then had his sage send a message to the Ultramarines that they were to board their rhino, and start towards the fortress as soon as the ground stopped shaking.
As the Warhound Scout Titan, Infernum, of the Adeptus Mechanicus drawed closer, it began to ready it's twin Volcano Cannons for the clearing of the walls. As it drew closer the solid wall of artillery shells ceased, and the Ultramarines got inside their Rhino. As it walked across the No Mans Land cleared by the Imperials, the huge Volcano Cannons spewing flame across the walls. Not just incinerating the rebel guardsmen, but melting the very weapons they stood by. Then, as Infernum finished it's duties with the walls, it turned its attention to the gate. Turning both cannons to the gate, it began to expand, and distort under the extreme heat. Then, a tracer round fired from way back landed, right in front of the gates.
A general vox cry was emitted. "One thousand eight hundred and forty yards north east. Full velocity, minimal wind. Fire."
As a full legion of artillery shells descended on the tiny flare that was the tracer round, the entire gate was blown into shards. The Black and Red dot that was the Space Marine rhino proceeded up to the gate. Infernum retreated to the Imperial Line, while Revii and his personal attendants boarded their Chimera.
As the Rhino proceeded across the blackened No Mans Land, Artemis surveyed the landscape. Looking through the heaps of twisted metal that used to resemble a gate, the command was given for them to proceed through the rest of the fortress by foot.
Disembarking at the gate, they walked into a vast, but completely deserted, courtyard. There was absolutely no decoration, barring the grey flagstone tiles, and grey walls. A metal gate stood at the other side of the courtyard. The auspex was handed to him by Brother Talor, and he turned it to Bioforms. It was completely blank, there was nothing living within 200 metres.
Progressing towards the rusted gate, Artemis drew his power sword, and made a clean sweep at the hinges, and the gate fell with an almighty clang, to the floor. Then, beyond the door, was a corridor going in two directions. The auspex showed no biological mass in either direction, turning it to psychic energy, it was also blank down both corridors. As Artemis went to attatch the Auspex back to his waist, a massive reading came up on the device. Pointing it downwards, this flared up, and bright light filled almost the whole screen.
"If only we could sink through the floor, shame those Raven Guard arent here, theyre almost like ghosts." muttered Brother Kalri
Walking down the leftern passageway, with his squad close behind, Artemis hefted his flamer. In corridors like these, a flamer would be a godsend. Progressing down blank flagstoned passageways, they reached a door at the end. Kicking it in, and clearing the room efficiently, they found it to be as empty as an Ork's skull. In the centre of the room was a pathway, spiralling at a slight incline downwards. Walking down, at the head of his squad, with his flamer prepped and ready to fire, he noticed that the flagstones stopped, and it became a cave face. This was evidently a natural system of caves.
Progressing down at a steady pace, they reached the bottom and found an iron door. As Artemis drew closer, he heard his vox crackling, and stood still, trying to decipher what was being said in among the crackling. He motioned for Kalri to open the door. Kicking it in, very brutally, he walked through. Then a titanic screech or gas being released was heard, and white hot plasma gas engulfed Kalri, and the other unfortunate squad members who had followed him through.
Revii and his attendants progressed down a cast iron staircase, lined in chrome, deep into the catacombs beneath the surface of the planet. When his vox began to crackle. It appeared to be incomprehensible noise, so he ordered his servo skull to translate. Projecting the letters onto the iron wall from its holographic imagifier, it spelled out.
As Revvi had though, nonsensical gibberish. Then he noticed it reflected in the chrome.
I WILL EAT YOUR SOUL
Revvi stopped. He began to grow worried. Then realised it was a message from Artemis. Had he fallen to the powers of chaos? Now he had even more to purge. Then suddenly he noticed the psychic imprint meter displayed through his bionic eye going wild.
"Midna, take my vox".
Midna, his blank, took the vox and listened. The crackling stopped.
"It's a message from Sergeant Artemis sir."
Translating what Artemis was saying, the skull, once again displayed it on the wall.
EMPEROR COMMEND THE SOULS, OF THE SIX BROTHERS LOST, WE WERE OFF GUARD DUE TO THE STARTLING EMPTINESS OF THIS CASTLE. IT SHALL NOT HAPP-
Bursts of gunfire started from over the vox, and it went dead.
Revvi contemplated what he had just heard. Telling his retinue to be on guard, he continued. After reaching the floor, he looked around. An iron door looked back at him. Activating his refractor field, and clutching his Rosarius in his hand, he walked towards the door. Ordering his fighting staff to stand behind him, in case of danger, and they were to storm in as soon as the door opened.
Revvi opened the door, and, for a split second, he was looking down the barrel of a Plasma Cannon defense turret, before his refractor field flared, and he dived forwards. He was lucky his field had stopped a shot so powerful. Turning round he realised his retinue werent so lucky. Their charred remains decorated the floor. Looking up he saw the plasma cannon sense his presence, and begin to aim for him. Daemonic faces leered out of the walls, laughing at the Inquisitors early demise. Then, he heard the distinct sound of bolter fire. The stand the turret stood on collapsed under a hail of fire, just as the plasma cannon fired.
White hot pain seared the Inquisitors face, and scorched out one eye completely. His face must have been mangled and torn looking. And he could now only half see the shadowy faces leering out of the walls, mocking his pitiful folly. His spirit left him, and he prepared to collapse.
Then a gigantic armoured form appeared right in front of him, and extended a huge metal gauntlet.
"Take Hold Of My Hand, For You Are No Longer Alone."
"Walk With Me In Hell."
Really nice stuff..
A couple of minor canonical points.. firstly, the deep coordination between the Ultramarines and the Inquisition goes against the established fluff a little. The two have very separate command structures.. They can fight together, of course, but the marines are very unlikely to be riding Inquisitorial rhinos, or taking orders from an Inquisitor. They're going to be allies rather than minions, the Marine commander will probably have had a role in planning the assault, etc.
I can't remember my epic very well, but I don't think volcano cannons are giant flamers.. I think they're enormous lascannon equivalents used for titan duels.
Also, there's already a captain Artemis in the Inquisition.. He leads a deathwatch kill team.
The story is awesome though.. good immersion and very well written.
Very good points, however, it is not exactly deep coordination, the Inquisitor simply requested a squad of Ultramarines to help him storm this bastion. But I do see what you mean =). However, the Marine Commander may well have told them to help, it isn't really established as it is not that important.
As far as I know Volcano Cannons are the new name for the gigantic flamers on a Warhound, I may be mistaken, it was off the top of my head, I will check it up tomorrow.
Yes, but this is my own Artemis, company as of yet unknown (im undecided).
Thanks for the praise This is my second ever attempt at writing anything of this scale.
Artemis reached into his utility pack, and loaded a fresh canister of Promethium into his flamer. Revii drew his Inferno Pistol and reloaded it. The intricate decorations glowed dully in the dim light given off by the howling faces in the wall.
The Pistol was an Artifact given to him by Lord Inquisitor Karamazov. A long thin barrel, that extended, and towards the end resembled a brazier. Made of bronze coloured metal, with a wooden varnished handle. Along the barrel read the inscription:
"There is no such thing as a plea of innocence in my court. A plea of innocence is guilty of wasting my time."
Then, drawing his power sword in his other hand, he activated the activation glyph, and his power sword began to glow.
The screaming faces that yearned out of the wall. Revii leaned back, and muttered something about heresy. Artemis however, informed him, that no matter how contorted the rock holding these spirits back stretched, they could never touch them. The poor souls, their faces locked in an expression of anguish, could never be free. They would do nothing for eternity.
Artemis was speaking to him about what had happened after the vox cut off. The remnants of his squad had also walked straight into the Plasma Cannon ambush. However, a well aimed krak grenade from Brother Kalri had taken the turret out. Then, as they had proceeded along the Corridor, the remaining seven came to what resembled a closed maw in the ground. When approached, the mouth opened, in a sickening, utterly not human way. However, as this happened, they were beset by a force of heretics, traitors and mutants. They numbered roughly thirty, and in the tight conditions of the room, the bolters had felled many. However, two of the mutants had charged into the Marines, with meltabombs in each hand. Blowing themselves up for their dark masters. Artemis had shouted to his squad to dive down the hole, but there had been no time. Artemis had just managed to get away.
The floor below had been rank with horrors, according to the grizzled veteran, but he didn't waste time in speaking of them. He said Revii would see soon enough. However, Revii was slightly perturbed by the dark gouges covering the Marines left shoulder guard.
Artemis led the Inquisitor down the twisting passageways. They discussed tactics and what they were going to do. They would continue down the passageways and corridors, until they found the Heretics below. They would purge them, and any witch, or daemon, along the way. Vox communications were down, so they were on there own. But the decided they would continue, as this pit reeked of the Daemonic.
Raising his Power Sword, Revii walked up to the maw in the ground and descended downwards.
Into the Darkness.
