Hello, well in the back of the 3rd edition rule book there is a entire page that has the full history of humans on it and several times it mentions "and the emporer still waited" and from the looks of it he is over 30,000 years old just from the amount of time it is says he has been "waiting" to lead mankind.
I'm kind of confused I always thought he was just a normal human being?
He is a human with a bunch of machinery hooked up to him so he can live forever

Here's the general idea:
A long time ago, in our own galaxy, and indeed on Earth, the shamans of mankind became aware of the warp and the dangers that went with it. They all got together, and had a big ol' ritual where they all died. A year later, their souls are reborn as a superpsyker who would one day become the Emperor. This is back in the B.C. days. He bides his time, and its hinted that he is or is the puppet master to several important historical figures in the history of mankind. He's immortal, and lives may millenia while manipulating history. Finally, after the mankind takes to the warp travel again after losing contact with the other planets, he conquers Earth and embarks on his great crusade.
In a nutshell, he super duper pysker man and immortal.
The shaman thing was retconn'd i think.
Due to GW being extremely hazy on it this are the basics.
Emperor is born he waits out until humanity is ready
as tekore says he did poke human history a bit. then when the warp storms subside he conquers the various "techno barbarian" tribe/clans then underneath his birth place in modern turkey he engineers the primarchs. He makes his Legions and the rest in summery
"Veni, Vidi, Vici"
I Came, I Saw, I Conquered
Basically, in the beginning, the warp was good. Peaceful. Beneficial. Like a tranquil ocean. The Shaman's could simply reencarnate themselves, and continue to lead their peoples. Over time, the Warp turned bad. So they decided to combine. Emperor happens. He discreetly leads humanity, as a scientist, warrior, leader. Always concealing his true identity. After the age of strife, he rises and reveals himself to lead humanity to reestablish their empire once again.
GW hasn't contradicted this version, although it hasn't been published in some time.
"Some time" being in Realms of Chaos: The Lost and the Damned anno 1990...
While it have never been contradicted, it is still not that plausible to consider it viable in today's 40k. This history was published in the days of Rouge Trader, and the game have changed substantially since then. The most plausible thing we have know is from one of the HH-books (IIRC) that states that the Emperor was born 8000BC in Anatolia.
Yeah, well I have the advantage of knowing that this is just fiction, which will completely devastate your Space Shaman-Emperor, buying enough time for my Emperor to stab him in the back. >=]
Only to discover that one of the custodes accidently dropped his gun on one of his oxygen tubes. Or his prune juice IV.
