the main reason is that nurgle offers salvation from the one thing ALL mortals fear, death.
as a man lays in bed dieing from a virulent plague, his family dieing all round him, he will offer hiself to nurgel, who would save him from death by makeing him immune to the desise he carries.
PROUD TO BE IN THE BRITISH ARMY.
~~ Surrender and serve me in life, or die and slave for me in death~~
In some of the old fluff the followers of Nurgle all embrace the certainty of death and, therefore, live each day as though it is their last.
Thet are amongst the happiest of all the chaos followers.
Few reasons I can think of to join the swarm of Grandfather Nurgle:-
Jolly grandfather Nurlge proclaims drink and be merry! eat to excess! who CARES that you ruin the world around you, consuming and corrupting every reasorce you have access too, who cares that your body has been desiccated by disease and by constant excess! do the things you enjoy and to hell with the consequences! Nurgle loves you..... and will protect you..... forever and ever
Fear of death is also another reason people join Nurgles swarm, like others have said, Grandfather Nurgle protects you from the consequences but not the symptoms.
The thing is both the 41s millennium and the old/new worlds of warhammer fantasy are really hard miserably places for humans to live. War is everywhere, disease and death are rampant. Nurgle in effects offers you the only salvation that you can see working. Nurgle will give you protection from all that misery and death and all you have to do is act as a vessel for his will. Hell Nurgle doesn't even really ASK you to do anything hard, you don't have to study or strive for power like for Tzeentch, you don't have to strive for impossible levels of perfection or bring down civilized society like for Slaanesh and you don't have to really go out and engage in ever harder and more numerous battles like for Khorne.
Are you sick? Weakly? Corrupted?
Grandfather Nurgle will make you strong! Enduring!
Besides, the second law of thermodynamics teaches us that everything will eventually collapse into irreversible and inevitable entropy and decay.
If you are with Nurgle, then you're bound to be on the winning side.
You just have to be patient. And you have forever...
The Chaos Daemon codex does give the impression that he is a nice guy. Great Unclean Ones trat Nurglings as little children, who in turn clamour for their love. Strange, but Nurgle does sound sweet. He's meant to be the friendlies of all the Chaos Gods (if there is such a thing as a friendly Chaos God).

Which is odd, because he is formed from the emotion Despair. If you are one of his followers, What have you to despair about? You are immune to all disease.
Yeah, he is formed from despiar.. Once you give into that despair, and resign yourself to corruption and decay, then you could dedicate yourself truly to Father Nurgle, and instead of disease crippling you, it strengthens you. But, you'll stil lsuffer all the symptons of the disease.
So, really, it makes the most sense to worship Nurgle. All the Gods grant you power, of differing forms, but at a price.
Worship Khorne, and you end up losing all sense of self, and desire for anything but Blood for the Blood God!!
Worship Slaanesh, and you end up a slave to your own emotions and crave for satisfaction
Worship Tzeentch, and you run the very high risk of becoming extremely mutated.
Worship Nurgle, and you get a bit of a sore throat.
I know which I'd choose.

To worship a Chaos god is, in essence, to completely give in to that god's core emotion. In all cases, there are negative consequences, i.e. becoming so enraged you're incapable of linear thought, becoming so enraptured by your pleasures you become jaded and constantly need a more intense 'high', planning so meticulously for the future you forget about the present and your plans begin to trip up on themselves.
However, to give yourself completely to your despair takes you past the point of being paralyzed by your own fear. You become dead inside without any fear, knowing that you're bound to degrade and fall in any case. Without that fear of pain or failure, you're basically unstoppable.
