Tau Cooperating with Marines: I need a reason why!

I'm participating in a doubles tournament this weekend, 4th edition, random games, always gamma level, 2500 points per side. I play Tau, of Hikari no Kurayami (basically a personalized sept) and am allied with the Sons of Ultramar, and we're facing a large number of unknown variety of other double teams. Why would Space Marines, especially pure ones from the Sons of Ultramar, fight beside the Tau?

My gaming group's new motto: That army you're using is overpowered because it hurts my guys, codex is broken and needs a rewrite.

In the 5th edition fluff, it mentions Ultramarines fighting alongside Tau to battle Necrons, and even allowing the Tau to leave peacefully afterwards. I found this a little out of character for ANY Space Marine chapter, but it isnt completely out of the question.

Enemy of my enemy is my ally...

Space Marines and Tau dislike eachother, however they dislike everyone else MORE. Perhaps an undersized Marine strikeforce (by undersized I mean they thought there were less nasty things to kill...by half) requires allies in a pinch, and as any Imperial backup is out of reach they turn to the Tau nearby, who are willing to call a cease fire for the greater good.

(edit): I considered this scenario and realise that if they asked for a REASON the armies were working together...I'd never be able to run T-T.

Now, you can approach this from two different angles:

    i. Space Marines are genetically disposed to hate aliens of all sorts. They'd rather die than beseech their honor by fighting with xenos.

ii. Space Marines are not frothing-at-the-mouth fanatics - their dedication is to the mission rather than any silly ideas of monodomainism. Plus, they can always kill the Tau once they are done.

Personally, I'd be more inclined to take i. as the true point (various fluff backs this up, most notably (i.e., what I can remember) Gav Thorpe's Notes on Using Marines in =][=, which states that Marines are extremely unlikely to fight in warbands with xenos/xenos weapons).

It'd be much easier to buy a IG regiment (whose Commissar isn't around to shoot the ranking officer for this heresy) allying with the Tau than the marines. That said, Marines are generally intelligent and their overall desire is to complete the mission. I'd say ii. is possible but not plausible.

If you're thinking of making a mixed Tau/Marine Army - don't. If you want to play a cool one-off game, why not?

When i think of foes allying with each other its because of a greater threat. Tyranic invasion, necron tomb opening upin the midde of the battlefield, chaos warp gate opening up spilling horde apon horde of daemons. Something that would require them to put killing each other aside for alittle while so they can kill something els.

Me and my friend are still learning the rules but we had a senario with my night lords and his raven guard fighting off me others friends massive tyranid hord. When we managed to destory all the nids we then turnd on each other with what tiny amount of modles we had left...Im sure he had a sm comander with power sword and sm with power fist and i had my lord with jump pack. I managed to kill his commander but with my lords last wound he got smeard across the corpse stricken battlefield.

...or it could simply be a matter of them being ordered to do so by a member of the Inquisition. Depending on the Chapter, of course, most Marines are pretty respectful of the Inquisition's purpose.

I remember a story from perhaps the older Tau codex where a human emissary was escorted by a Marine through a Tau city. If the Marine really hated the Xenos in all its myriad forms, he'd have gone ape-poopie in the Tau city and spend that evening flicking bits of gray flesh off his armor.

Plus it wouldn't be the first time a marine army has fought alongside Tau, especially Ultramarines. Examples include like what Zarak said and like in the game Firewarrior. The main reason for Marines to fight alongside Tau is that there is a greater threat or more hated foe to fight. Others could include the Ordo Xenos requesting a space marine chapter to fight in a joint mission with the Tau empire, both in order to accomplish a mission and to study their temporary Tau allies, gathering information about them.

Even the Tau Empire codex itself notes that the Imperium has been known to negotiate grudging alliances (albeit usually termporary ones) with the Tau when circumstances require it. There's some great artwork in there of a marine commander meeting with an ethereal, and they don't look like they're about to kill each other...

Basically, I think it's like the relationship with the Eldar: They're not "friends," but on occasion have been known to temporarily set aside their differences and work together to meet a common goal. I'm sure you could write/think something up to apply to your current campaign.
Mickey: "You're just making this up as you go along!"
The Doctor: "Yuuuup. But I do it brilliantly!"

Definitely make it a strained alliance, with both Tau and Marines keeping a close eye on each other, watching for any sign of betrayal. As Canew mentioned, they will not be friends. There will never be any buying of drinks or friendly slaps on the back after a victory (though that is more then acceptable with the actual person playing the Marines, of course). Fluffwise, as soon as they no longer share a common goal, they will most likely be at odds with each other again. To the Marines, the Tau are a threat, with their concept of the Greater Good being very tempting to the downtrodden and suffering citizens of the Imperium. To the Tau, the overzealous and brutal Marines will have no place in the Tau's idealistic and unrealistic view of the perfect galaxy.

Nids or Orks would be the main reason they'd team up, just too many to kill on their own.
